| Pub names 15:53 - Nov 27 with 2902 views | colinallcars | I used to drink in the Hope & Anchor in Hammersmith and a workmate who was a Wall fan but a nice chap (really!), used to drink in the Anchor & Hope 'round his way. We discovered the names are from a hymn with the line “hope is the anchor of the soul”. My current fav name is the Mad Bishop & Bear in Paddington. Any others ? | | | | |

Full of Gooners unfortunately so made my excuses and left. We’ve got the Pyrotechnists Arms down our way. Bit of a Wawll vibe, sadly, but great name nonetheless.

I always fancied running a pub called 'The Gym'. 'You off out?' 'Yeah, just nipping to the gym, love' We'd make a killing, I tell you.

It's to do with the Cambridge spy ring. I could.bore for England (well, Qpr) on this subject.

And I'm sure most of you of a certain age will have frequented The Mechanics Arms in Churchfield Road, Acton back in the day. Was more commonly know as "Diggers" due to it being next to a graveyard. My Dad and all my uncle's first pints (and many more after!) were in there.

Originally ‘The Polegate Inn’ it was used by Australian soldiers during WW1 who used to call it - The Fair Dinkum - meaning “true” or “genuine”. The name stuck and it’s now simply called ‘The Dinkum’ and is a pretty decent Harvey’s pub.

I like Harvey's , they used to have it in the Prisoner of War in Dalling Rd. Haven't been there for a long time.

Now that’s what I call serendipity. I’ll be in Polegate in a couple of weeks so will definitely look in. Another upvote for Harvey’s from me too.

| Pub names on 18:34 - Nov 27 with 1704 views | Pindarus | A few pubs called "The Duke of York" may well be in line for a new name. The DOY in Fitzrovia had a signboard with Mountbatten Windsor's picture on it but I gather this has now been taken down. | | | |

There's a lyricism to that name I just love. For me, it conjures up an image of something beautiful yet mournful. Anyway, I haven't been in there yet, but it looks nice from the outside :)

We were in the Duke in Belfast not so long ago. Now that is a pub and a half. Never considered the possibility of a name change. Fantastic place.

Oh yes. Last known as Foleys and more an estate agent. If I had to pick a pub most at odds with it's namesake it would be the Smuts. Jan Smuts (international statesman): signed the Treaty of Versailles, Paris Peace Treaty, founded League of Nations, Commonwealth and instrumental in establishing the United Nations. General Smuts (pub): all disputes settled with a heavy glass ashtray
| Pub names on 23:45 - Nov 27 with 1170 views | DannyPaddox | I was in Bethnal Green last year heading for Vicky Park so I decided to drop into a hostelry I’ve frequented a few times over the years, the Camel. I took a short cut down Sugar Loaf Walk but half-way down the alleyway something literally stopped me in my tracks. It was a museum I’d never seen before … The Vagina Museum. As it was a sunny afternoon and I already had plans I decided not to enter the Vagina Museum (stop laughing at the back) but moments later as my half-poured Guinness was settling on the bar at the Camel I said, all jovial like, to the girl pouring it, “considering you’re now a few yards along from the Vagina Museum you should rename the pub The Camel Toe.” Her response was neutral. I felt she wanted to cancel me but wasn’t quite sure what correctness I’d contravened. ps: the Vagina Museum has now moved around the corner to Cambridge Heath Road. Seriously … Google “Vagina Museum East London” and as well as getting links for the West Ham United Hall of Fame & Club Shop you’ll see it’s legit. | | | |
