Amazingly the title predictor thing when I typed in the word Gaffer automatically found... on today's defeat
I think it's safe to say that us fans are pretty p*ssed off this evening but I'm not sure we are as p*ssed off as Stephan is this evening.
Let me stick up for him for a moment. I looked at the side he chose today and thought, yeah, that's the side I would have picked and the changes I would have made. It didn't work and I would have been scratching my head too right now.
Late on in this interview he talk about it being a mentality issue and he's right. The problem is that 'the mentality issue' has been the same f*cking issue for the last 3-4 years and the last 4 managers. Every single one of them seems to inherit a mentality hex issue that dogs the club.
That starting 11 should have won today. So we can have a go at the manager. He picks the teams etc but tonight the players need to have a real look at themselves and get their act together.
This is a squad that blew Leicester away 12 days ago... and then decided to phone in the next 3 performances. We can all blame the manager but the players have to stand up on Sunday and show us that they aren't feeble and have some pride about their work.

It's called standards - I grew up on excellence at QPR.
If you prefer mediocrity, good luck!
Let's all bow to you then. You absolute fool. We all have standards but understand that comparisons like that are pointless. Two different times and standards of players so different it is a redundant exercise. Have a bit of realism and you might not look such a fool to everyone

Stephan has one way of playing. He’s very stubborn and bordering on Warburton and Holloway. The Christmas period has been a disaster. 3 games against Pompey, West Brom and Norwich. All struggling sides and you can count on one hand the number of chances we have created. He’s clearly getting told by Ben Williams and the data boys who is available or not. We have had radio silence on JCS. No other side yesterday made more than 8 changes and we somehow managed to look even worse than the West Brom game. Too many squad players are just not good enough for this level. The constant changing of the keeper and defence is not helping. It’s not rocket science to know any successful side needs a consistent back 5. We change our back 5 every game. We must be the only professional team that rotates its goalkeeper! I couldn’t even tell you who our number 1 is which is farcical. The only player not being rotated is Dunne because I assume he’s the captain and has to play. I have struggled to warm to Stephan all season and the last 3 games haven’t helped. He needs a massive performance against Sheff Wed and to actually take the FA Cup seriously. If I turn up at West Ham next week and he plays a weakened side with kids he needs to go straight to Stratford station to get on the first train to Stanstead and get himself on the next Ryan Air flight back to France.
every manager has one way of playing, can you think of any managers who change the system and style when they fancy it.
he started this season 4-3-3 but saw the players and what we had and changed it to get the best out of them which has worked.
I have a lot of sympathy for the manager, when he picks the same team in these busy weeks he gets slated for not understanding he needs to make changes, when he changes it he gets slated anyway.
We have to make changes to thht backline. Nardi came in and did pretty well, kept the score down after Hamer was dreadful at West Brom. Hamer is also out of contract now so may well have told the club he is off or the club are not giving him a new deal and looking elsewhere, complete speculation on my part but is possible.
You have RND who can't play every game so always misses one game in these weeks with multple games. JCS is out injured so rather than risk Cook at his age with 4 games in 10 days he played Morrison in one of them. He's been doing that for a while but with JCS coming in for the odd game when we were winning.
I do get the frustrations and we have been poor the last few games but it is so tiresome to see people shit the bed everytime we lose a few games. We're a streaky team who will be really good for a few games then really bad, is pretty much the same for every team in this league. We were never going to maintain the recent run winning 4 home games in a row, the key now is to get out of the bad run as quickly as possible. Earlier in the season we lost 3 games in a row and it was back to relegation talk before we picked up again. Hopefully will be the same again

Lots of good points and sense in that post .
But what I find tiresome is the constant (not by you in particular Dave) from some about fans ‘bedwetting’ or ‘shitting the bed’ after being critical of a poor performance or 3 . Hate those terms and are used by most fans (again not you in particular Dave as I know you can be critical of the club and team as anyone ) who don’t want to hear criticism in any way of the club or head coach or CEO .
It’s just being a football fan isn’t it ?
You celebrate when you win and moan and dissect when you lose .
The bottom line is we have been horrendous since that Leicester game and sporadically mostly away from from home since August. The OP is good as the players do have to take some blame and stand up now. But Stéphan has been very poor too on more than one occasion .
I think fans are entitled to a gripe after yesterday . I didn’t see anyone call for him to be sacked or any stuff over the top like that , not on here anyway . I don’t do social media but that’s a madhouse anyway . The players and the head coach and his staff have to take a long hard look at the last 3 matches and come out swinging on Sunday . But I fear more excuses about workload, the pitch, mentality , tiredness etc etc

I've just seen a lot of stuff about how now the manager is awful, all the players are crap thats what I was referring to with shitting the bed. I think it's bang on to criticse the performance yesterday, we were awful but I don't think that should equate to we're gonna fall apart and we're doomed which feels like the vibe at the moment. I probably shouldn't look on social media but thats where a lot of it comes from.

Another one who's beaten before he's started. I've debunked the tired and tiring budget/position correlation again and again, with evidence, and still it's trotted out by one or two as a self-defeating cliche.
We didn't lose today because we're short of money.
As for JS, he's starting to look for me like a man with plenty of questions, but lacking the answers. He's said we lack mental strength, intensity, technical/tactical knowhow, but doesn't seem to be able or willing to deal with any of it. He's the coach - so what's he f*cking for?

Nurse I need a drink, I agree with Stainrods Elbow!
Gaffer on today's defeat on 21:37 - Jan 1 by stainrods_elbow
So why even bother with going through the charade of post-match interviews/pressers at all and asking him semi-intelligent questions?
I'm sure you're right though - saying something honest, clear, and authentic like, I don't know, 'We may have to change it in games sometimes by putting an extra body into midfield and creating a 10 when it's not sticking to our top two - but it was hard to do that today, as we don't have Ilias to call on. It's my job to work it out with the players, though, as we really let our fans down today, and they deserve so much better from all of us. I'll be thinking carefully about our approach to the Wednesday game, and making every moment we have count in our preparation. Without disrespecting them, we really have to be looking them to put to the sword, given their record this season, and, thinking of last time out, we especially need to come up with a cunning plan to deal with Mr Bannan', would surely give all our opponents all kinds of tools to relegate us and make us all feel much worse.
[Post edited 1 Jan 21:42]
Well, exactly, it’s all a waste of time IMO.
I don’t bother with pre and post match manager interviews because they are simply not going to give anything away (and not should they) and it’s just formula answers to formula questions, repeated 45+ times a season.
“Do you think the opposition team should have had a penalty?”
“Oh no…” [furiously tugs ear lobe] “it was a clean tackle and I didn’t see anything wrong with it”
The manager is hardly going to say that the player was taken out, stonewall penalty and a sending off.
Same with MoTD, so much air time given to post match analysis (just show more match minutes), all a waste of time. I can see for myself thanks. Yet they get paid huge amounts for what amounts to pub talk and ‘bantz’.

If you go to the Frey article on WLS there is the full 10 minutes presser. He is very honest in it.
Personally I like him, I might not like all the football and we were poor yesterday. Which he accepts. I think the difficulty in this period for the coach whoever they are is they can't really do much in training correctively, they will have one session with the team they have to prepare tactically for the next opponent in. As he says we lost a lot of duels yesterday. He also talks about he has a number of players who cannot play twice in 3 days we complain about the rotation but that is the reality of the squad at the moment. The way we play asks for a lot of running from the front 2 as well. Burrell looks totally shattered, and a big part of the positive run had been Burrell's performances. The team know they are playing poorly and therefore the confidence has drained as well.

Agree with every word of that. Streaky team to begin with + streaky manager.
It’s also worth remembering this is the first time he’s ever managed over the Christmas period. So him getting things a bit wrong (the WBA team in particular) is part of the trade off you make when hiring someone without experience in the league.
It is boring to see the same faces (or usernames) come out the woodwork after two defeats to tell us all how they were right all along and Stéphan is actually clueless.
Remember where we’ve been for the last 3 years. This is better.

In my opinion Mart - The definition of Bedwetting, or shitting the bed is people who suggest we're getting relegated and the board should be looking to sack the manager. I have seen both comments on this very board after our last 3 games
Fully agree, gripe away after yesterday. I watched the full match and people on the match thread were saying we were ok in the first half, and I was like 'I must be watching a different game' because I thought we were shocking in both halves.
I disagree about the Away games bit as until recently we had the best away record in the whole of the football league (definitely not now though!!)
I also think Stephan is given a list by the fitness/medical team of who is available and he has to select from that, and as we know nowadays a lot of that is data driven. I once read that players are given a questionnaire to complete and that is fed into a computer to decide whether or not they are fit enough to play - I read it on a cricket forum I believe from someone involved in Cricket Australia - And whilst they are two different sports ultimately I guess the fitness coaches adapt these things. So maybe workload/tiredness is something that he has his hands tied on

4-4-2 has generally been successful for us so far this season, but it has been obvious for a few weeks (particularly away from home), that we need to be able to try something different such as 4-3-2-1 to block off the midfield.
My main complaint is that teams have now worked us out and we are dependent on individuals doing something special which hasn't happened in the last 3 games. As others have pointed out, most of the subs have been like for like without any tweaks/changes to the overall formation which sometimes you need to get back into a game or to make the opposition think.

Some great points raised Dave B and I agree with most of it. But - ‘ we were never going to maintain our four match winning run at home’. Why not? And especially why not against Norwich? ‘We are a streaky team’ - why? ‘Streaky’ is just another word for inconsistent . If we accept that Leicester first half was a ‘tear in the fabric of reality’ (as per LFW glossary), why cannot we maintain the standards we showed against Birmingham for example? If we played against Norwich (and Portsmouth and WBA) like we played against Brum, I’m confident we would have accrued more than one point. You are absolutely right, we are not going to win every game (Championship innit?), but can we not at least try to?

Yeah fair points.
But I did say sporadically didn’t I?
Watford, Coventry, Derby come to mind early on . All horrendous when we so good at Wrexham , for example . That’s more my point .

He’s mismanaged Christmas.
Slice it and dice it whichever way you like but you were 3 points off the play offs and on the back of your best performance of the season, with games against 16th, 21st, 23rd and 24th to come and this is what you did with it.
True.
And it isn't just the issue of 1 point from those 3 matches, but the lack of attacking intent and shots on or off target. 2 yesterday, 0 against WBA and maybe 2 at Portsmouth.
The team selections and substitutions were baffling.
EDIT: Although if the availability of players is decided by medical and physios, then it might explain some of it. I have just watched MotD and according to the journalist Chelsea do a similar thing and Maresca quit because he wasn't happy with that level of interference.
Rather than it being a mentality issue (same as the last 4 seasons), can it be a management one?
He and the players have a game on Sunday in which they can maybe repair some of the damage they have done.

O yes, realism! You absolute plonker! The whole idea of standards is that they take you beyond mediocrity and complacent limits. If you don't get the point about trying, at least, to aim for the stars and be educated by excellence, and simply show your own stupidity by resorting to insults, there's not much that can be done for you.

I quite enjoy watching the look of bewilderment on JS’s face. He now knows he has his work cut out.
What he won’t be able to do is solve the problem overnight. There are many variables at work putting a successful team together, many of which will not be solved on the training ground alone. I strongly suspect he will be making plans to revamp the squad into something more to his liking.
We are 2/3 windows and another season away from being anywhere near competitive enough to trouble the play offs. Hope he lasts long enough to see it through.
