| Sell Jon Varane ? 17:41 - Jan 9 with 6593 views | MickB | Take the money. He adds nothing going forward and while his positional play is good, he seems prone to a loss of concentration. And we have Haydn and Sam as defensive mids. | | | | |

| Sell Jon Varane ? on 20:46 - Jan 10 by numptydumpty | Maybe Varane gets so much stick on this forum because of his name. Sure Jobe Bellingham could offer some nuggets of help to overcome such a situation. If his name was Smith, Jones or Field, do think he would not get much criticism at all. Just a thought of mine..... "Maybe Varane gets so much stick on this forum because of his name. Sure Jobe Bellingham could offer some nuggets of help to overcome such a situation." His first name, Jonathon, is very common in England. His surname, Varane, has Germanic and Slavic roots. "If his name was Smith, Jones or Field, do think he would not get much criticism at all." Sam Field gets a lot of criticism so that's that theory blown to SMITHereens. "Just a thought of mine....." A nonsense thought. Stop race baiting. | | | |

I thought the point made was that Varane's brother won the World Cup with France, just as Jobe Bellingham's brother is a world-class footballer and this assigns far more pressure due to bearing a fairly unique/distinct name in the footballing world.

I considered that angle until I read "If his name was Smith, Jones or Field, do think he would not get much criticism at all." That laid bare the true nature of the comment. Besides, there is no evidence to support the notion that QPR fans are holding Jonathon to a higher standard because his brother was a top footballer. Jude and Jobe are full brothers and are playing in the same era. Raphael is retired and Jonathon is his half-brother. The simple truth of the matter is Jonathon is an average footballer. If anyone is offering £5-6 million for his services, QPR should bite their hand off.

Hayden's not a long term replacement, but another way to look at it is that we didn't really look like we were missing Varane yesterday, so if clubs are offering a decent price for him we really should be taking the profit. The evidence is that we can replace with Hayden for now, and should be able to find a longer term replacement equivalent to Varane on current (and past?) form in the summer.

And with £5m we can buy a replacement for £1m from the lower leagues and £2m for that mythical LB and pocket the rest (which means we may not have to sell again for a while). Hayden was brought in to do a job, lets get him earning his keep.
