| Christian Pullella on 13:26 - Jan 28 by EuroRanger | DMc seemed to be hinting that it was a permanent in the WLS podcast. Would be quite amusing if we turn around and sell Adamson for a profit. Maybe that's the plan now? Buying kids in Oz for 100k and then selling them 6 months later to the US for 500k, plugging the PSR gap one Aussie youngster at a time. |
Wonder how long it will take ICE to twig we're in the people smuggling business?

| Christian Pullella on 13:41 - Jan 28 by numptydumpty | Definitely most odd. But if some kind of strange deal done behind the scenes with an agent so both ourselves and themselves both benefit makes sense. Because from a footballing perspective, have yet to see any evidence that any of these signings will be no more than bit part players even in a couple of seasons time, so is it perhaps seen that we make a small profit on all, in the future. As, currently the model with this particular strategy gives very little evidence that these players are being bought as future championship level players at all, even if one comes off, which can't see as yet myself. |
Agree with the bit part players comment. Portsmouth bought 21 year old Segecic, an attacking midfielder, from Sydney FC last summer and he has scored 5 goals in 20 appearances. Watford signed Irankunda (19) , a winger. from Bayern Munich, he previously was at Adelaide and he has 2 goals in 22 appearances. He has strength and pace from what I have seen of him. So whilst the A League is not a high standard there are some players that are capable of performing well at this level. Time will tell if any of those at QPR will prove worth the time. So far I haven't seen much to convince me that QPR have got the right ones, but maybe if they go out on loan to teams in L1 or L2 for 3-6 months to play against adults rather than kids, they will be better next season.

The players we've brought in so far are yet to make any impact. We're in talks to buy a whole club down there. It just feels a bit odd.

I think the real point about our A-League is not that we have no quality players but that it’s badly run. As for the national team, we made the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup where we pushed Argentina all the way. Messi named that match as one of their hardest games. Not bad for a nation of only 25 million people. For the record, Pullella is a left footed ball playing centre back. Very comfortable carrying the ball forward so very much fits the Nourry mould I would think.

Adamson has played 69 minutes across four games so maybe there's something in the strategy, if that's what it is.

The strategy is fine, if niche when you factor in our labour costs to make it happen (including Nourry - time is money. The issue is 4 Aussie signing from the same agent. None of Jen First Team players. Data led? Remarkable coincidence. Someone is making money somewhere. They always are.

The a league is indeed poor. It was better 10 years ago than it is now. Football is down the pecking order of sports here. They much prefer sports where 5 or less countries really care so they can pump money into development and pretend they're a global sporting powerhouse. The media don't want football to succeed, yet participation among kids is very high and facilities very good. There is certainly potential. Australia's path to world cup qualifying is too easy, meaning they're getting in every time and this leads to a lack of urgency to improve the a league. The media will wet itself for the week or so they're involved and then go back to putting the game down. Likewise thousands of people will attend live sites in the early hours until they realise that an actual global game is quite tough to succeed at, quietly go back to their preferred sports or to watching the premier league, serie A etc on TV.. Been here 25 years now and 2006 was by far the best national team they've produced. The potential has always been here but not sure it will ever be realised. [Post edited 29 Jan 0:32]

Argentina also lost against Saudi Arabia at that world cup. Doesn't make the Saudis a good team.

Labour costs, exactly. We’re paying these players a wage irrespective of a transfer fee, for the club I can’t see how this makes sense as none of them seem to make it. Know I’m coloured by the Ned Zelic fiasco but have we ever had an Australian saleable asset at this club, never. And no, Luongo does not count.

Yes, but don't forget the value of Australian eggs' versatility.

It could be that you need a certain number of players to make up a development squad and not many DS players make it at our level anyway. So you sign players with some limited experience of first team football in their country to raise the level of the DS. Therefore, the players with the best chance are benefitting from playing in a better team. Examples of this could be Aoraha and Petrie. They may have come up through the age groups but they were kept on longer than usual. Both had very limited first team minutes but were decent DS players.

I think that's a valid point but in this case, the DS already has two LBs, Leahy and Adjetey-Brew, so there's no need to bring in Pullella to make up the numbers.

Another possibility is that it's a World Cup year and we did quite well out of FIFA compensation for Chair and Dieng at the last World Cup. The reason given for Morrison going on loan to Aberdeen is to give him a chance to make the Scotland squad. Maybe Adamson has a chance of getting into the Australia squad. If any of our players get to play in the tournament it's a great shop window. And even if they don't play we still get compensation for while they're at the tournament.
| Christian Pullella on 10:15 - Jan 29 with 849 views | Wilkinswatercarrier | Not every player bought will play in the first team, or will have very limited appearances. If we can 'flip' them quick and make a profit then that's all good for the club. I'm sure some are being purchased purely for the club to do this. Anyone who watched Adamson play against Stevenage in the pre season would have known straight away he was way out of his depth. Dived in every challenge and was just skipped around. | |

Based on how many minutes in the three (part) appearances he has made for us?

Yeah, you’re right. Beating Tunisia and Denmark to make the round of 16 and going within a whisker of taking the eventual world champions to extra time was all just a fluke.

22 is still pretty young. My joke about flipping these players 6 months later aside, it seems to me that we are aiming to grab athletically-gifted players in the hopes that we can teach them the positioning and skills. This is showing some fruit, with Bennie not lighting it up but showing he is there or thereabouts in the 1st team. I'd personally rather we got more developed players in but given our financial constraints, this seems like a low-risk high reward strategy, since players who don't look like making it can be flipped for a small profit / breaking even, and we might find a diamond in the rough. I don't love it but I don't hate it either.

Remember that bit about Brighton looking at undervalued positions/markets? Could be much the same thinking at a smaller scale. Pearman seems to have mostly disappeared, Adamson has had a few first team sub appearances and looked a bit better in his most recent one, Bennie is in that sort of 19th spot in the 18 where ideally he's not being used but he provides injury cover when necessary. He could really do with Obikwu taking over as the cover striker so he can go on loan somewhere and play consistently for a bit.

Try to calm down. That's why I said 'from what I've seen'. V small sample size admittedly, could be wrong. But it took me less minutes than Adamson has played to tell that Nico Hamalienen wasn't good enough. Same for Tony Scully. And Karl Ready. And... shudder... Lee Charles. So, yeah, you can sometimes tell.
