Am I alone in wondering what the hell is going on with Cooper?
24 years old, same age as Walsh and young for a keeper. Around 80 appearances in the Championship, L1 and L2. Consecutive loans with good reviews from those loans and each loan a step up. Isn't this the fabled development path for players, so that then integrate them in the team? And yet it seems we're about to offload him, I'm guessing permanently, having made the decision this week about 18 months too late to finally give Walsh a loan. As a result rumours are flying on us enquiring about a wide range of keepers from all over the place of varying ages, some permanent, some loan. Is there something wrong with Cooper we don't know about? (I'm not buying the "short" thing BTW, I think Cooper is 6'1, when Nardi was only 6'2 and you have keepers at top levels like Raya who are only 6'). I would have thought the natural move is to have Cooper competing as one of two potential starting keepers this season (maybe alongside another freebee) and focus our limited budget on sorting out other stuff like CM and a spare CB. But apparently it isn't.

Loans can be used to increase a players value so they can be sold, not necessarily for our 1st team. Those loans you mention, including in the Championship have made him an asset that can be cashed in.
The reviews of him have been pretty mixed, and he's not Championship level first choice, hence L1 teams are interested.
Sell him, 25% sell on clause. Home grown player which is pure profit etc. Next. | |

Then it was Nevistic and the giant Austrian.
Now it's Motherwell's Calum Ward, Varela, the Venezuelan, Pierce Charles on loan, Tommy Setford from Arsenal and Prior from Livingston.
It's a shambles. We're prepared to let Cooper go to any 1 of 3 L1 clubs. We can't think he's good enough despite numerous loans which seem to have gone well.
We believed, and still hope, Walsh will be our #1 for years despite him having limited loans when he was being used for 2 Cup games per season. Only now, he looks set for the sort of loan he should have had 2 seasons ago. All this, after releasing Nardi and Hamer. |  |

Carl Rushworth was a pretty good loan for Coventry last season. Would you rather have had him on loan or our very own Joe Walsh?
I think if you can get a keeper who is out of your price range on loan, it's not a position he can hide in. As Rushworth showed, it's worth half a dozen points at least. |
Carl Rushworth looked the business when he was at Lincoln which is my local team. Ive voiced on here before about how good Jack Moylan looks and although injured for the first part of last season, when he came back he tore that league up but as since signed an extended contract and would be out of range now probably, especially as they have been promoted.
However... George Wickens is there number 1 keeper, made the League 1 team of the year, signed from Fulham on a four year deal 2 years back, only 25 but looks to have a strength of character/arrogance about him that keepers need. £2m would probably get him and if you think you could get £500/750k for both Cooper and Walsh, it wouldnt be much of an outlay?
WE have shopped in L1 before recently with both Burrell & Kone which have ben positive buys. Lincoln are a developement club so thats my offering, nothing more than throwing something in the mix to pass these times of inactivity :) |  | | |

At least some of these will be agent talk or just clickbait. But, there can be little doubt the club/Nourry has not handled the keeper situation well. We can but hope we don't make the same mistakes in the future. |  | | |

I have sympathy with the hierarchy on the goalkeeper situation. It is possible that there is a chain involving several clubs, agents and players. If one deal gets delayed or doesn't happen then it can change the sequence of intended transactions.
No club can predict or control every aspect of a transfer if there are a number of moving parts and what can look weird from the outside can be logical from inside. This activity in fairness may be a case where details cannot be disclosed if there is a complex series of events involved.
That said, clubs that invest time in communicating straightforward info with fans earn trust. When you have that kind of relationship it cuts you some slack. For many reasons, some articulated here, that type of relationship does not yet exist.
Lastly as to critical comment being Nourry focused, well he kind of created that beast! He is in charge of back office support as well as football operations. He sets the strategy and the control of all the coaches. Stephan has confirmed the narrow definition of his role so he gets stick within those parameters when people do not like what they see on the pitch.
Nourry also said that his background means he has a very direct no messing comes style. If so, then it invites people to reciprocate.

The way I view it that there are very few folk who were happy with our goalkeepers last year. It looks like the club are clearing house and brining in a new set. That shouldnt be viewed as a negative.
I get the point that it should have been done earlier, but i also accept its not always that easy. And its not like keepers need massivley high fitness levels unlike outfield players, so if they miss a bit of preseason im not overly bothered.
If no one has come in by the end of the Austria trip, then thats when i start getting worried. [Post edited 8 Jul 19:42]

But I just think we undervalue pre-season and don’t want to be heading out there with just Salamon. Pre-season is so important to hit the ground running, and maximise your points total.
Yes, it’s tough to get everyone in before pre-season, especially with players not being released until 30th June. And I know full well the market is in flux well into August and even when the Prem sides name their 25.
The club did a good job to get The Boy Kemper in.
But going to Austria potentially with just Salamon in the keeping stocks is far from ideal. It could well impact training drills, let alone lose out on the relationship building across the squad.
Ultimately, whilst it’s hard, if you can get most of your business done early and really maximise your pre-season with the group you’ll run with for the year, it’ll provide a serious competitive advantage in the opening months of the season, against the clubs that have not.
And I want us to hit the ground running. We could/should be top 6 going into the West Ham game, looking at our fixture list.

In the case of Cooper, he’s reached a level where he is both a marketable asset and a first team contender. That is a successful development model.
That we don’t choose to keep him as a number two is actually a smart business decision. If he is to be #2 his value is worthless not playing, sitting on the bench and getting older. We can get a 30 year old to sit on the bench for #2 duties.
Perhaps Cooper doesn’t fit the goalkeeper profile, e.g. his skills in playing out. So he’s sold for money, while we pocket the funds, and look for a superior keeper profile who does fit the stated possession-style game model.
We’ve essentially fattened a pig up for market, using other clubs time and effort, and made money - all without disrupting the existing squad (assuming we bring in a cheap #2). We also did this with Kelman.
Note: this is actually how you develop a scalable player trading model. You don’t just limit your development players / promising sellable assets to the 11 in your first team, you send several prospects out on loan and hope they develop also. So you have 15 assets not 11.
I’ve got a number of issues with Nourry, but this isn’t one. It’s absolutely the right business model, and they should be doing a lot more of it. That is, if it’s a conscious strategy in the first place, which I am less sure about. Because it should be. Perhaps a good fans forum question. | | | |
