It's a tough call, but I think Kone overall, because he played the full game and never stopped working and 2 well taken goals.
Smyth Kolli and yes, Edwards were all very good. The latter put his body on the line, frequently won headers and distributed the ball very well. He started his return to the club quite low scale but has steadily improved to resemble the player he was when on loan last season. | | | |

Game of opinions and all that. Who actually set the criteria for what should define MOTM?! No idea.
My opinion from today is that Smyth was absolutely the catalyst for us winning that game. 2 great goals and one assist within the first 30 minutes of the game absolutely set us on the way to, handsomely, win that game.
It's almost impossible to call between Kolli and Kone in 2nd place, but if I had to, then Kolli for his 2 wonderful, strikers instinct goals.
fwiw, my reasoning for choosing a MOTM is that they had a direct influence on the outcome, which is why I can't go with Ronnie. Undoubtedly a class act, but just because you may be the best player on the pitch doesn't equate to you affecting the outcome.
Kolli is a great, instinctive striker and I'll happily accept him disapearing from the game if he's going to reappear with 2 gems like he did today, as well as against Cheff Wed.
Kone has been an absolute work horse these last few months and it was great to see him rewarded with his brace today.
But I'll come back to the beginning and the recognition that Smyth set us on our path to Sixcess... |  |

Think I up voted virtually every post as I agree with most of them... but I said on the pompey fred that I thought Kone was our best forward today so for me he was my MOTM
MoTM from what must have been the most bizarre of matches. I never feel sorry for oppo fans, as I doubt they ever feel sorry for us all Coventry..... but I did a little for them today
Was chatting to a pompey Dad with a young lad on our way back to the car, the lad was in tears.... and wished them well... but how they lost that game 6-1 is a mystery...

Agree with that they were all very good, but Edwards did lose the ball unnecessarily in dangerous positions a couple of times early on, but settled down and was very good even when moved out too RB. | | | |

I’m going to throw Joe Walsh into the MOTM discussion.
Having watched the extended highlights just now, he had no chance with the goal they scored - great strike from Jon Swift- (as you would expect from Jon Swift if left in challenged / 20 yards out.
The shot which he parried over in the first half was actually moving quite a bit in the air and he was facing the sun (watch the replay on the highlights from behind the shot) - it was actually a decent save considering.
When you watch some of the Portsmouth fans blogs, he was pulling off save after save in the second half.
Really good performance and credit where it’s due - particularly as we’re so quick to criticise our young players other times! [Post edited 22 Mar 7:35]

Strikes the ball so well – and showed it again with two emphatic finishes. The first was a fizzling low strike and the second a thumping, flamboyant finish after fine work on the right-hand side. Great stuff.
Richard Kone: 8
Not the best all-round performance, but he worked hard up front as always, was involved in some nice link-up play, and was rewarded for his efforts with two late goals – the first a penalty and the second a cracking finish.
Paul Smyth: 8
Scored with two great strikes and was always lively. A day he deserved for some workmanlike, sometimes thankless, displays this season. It was a great win for Rangers, but Smyth’s early contribution was the catalyst | |

A bit tangential but some of Smyth's positioning was interesting. He was often playing more centrally, sometimes switching places with Kolli, which gave him a bit more room to run into. He scored both goals from central positions and provided a perfect pass down the middle for Kolli's first.
I've not seen Smyth play in like that before and he made the most of the opportunity. |  | | |

I had to leave early so missed the las two goals, which obviously changes things, but I don't think Kone had a great game. So much bounces off him, his control is wayward if not woeful, he works very hard, i like him no end, but still really needs to sharpen up his touch. | | | |

Good post Fred but I think Edwards did affect the outcome. At 3-1 the next goal was critical. If they had got it momentum swings and it's a different game.
Edwards defending, whilst we were under pressure, was imho the main reason they didn't and our fourth was the killer blow. | | | |

He has some class, no doubt, IMO. He could be very good.
I still thing his natural position is a ball playing 8, perhaps no. 10, if we’re playing a dangerously good side.
If we had an solid offer for Madsen, I’d sell him and play Vale there instead. |
Smyth for me. His goals were at key pars of the game. He’s tenacious and presses hard. He had a terrific game. Just edges it for me.
Plaudits for Kone, two goals and worked hard for 90 mins; Kolli had two nice goals and after his first goal picked up his work rate and contribution; Vale I thought had a slow start and picked up too - he’s a difficult player to gauge as his contribution is often missed (I’m as culpable as anyone).

Smyth. Two goals and an assist after a good run and reverse pass even if it was Kolli's audacity that made the goal.
Vale. Two perfect through ball assists, and nearly a third which led to Smyth's first goal (but at times ropey too).
Kolli. Two extraordinary finishes form places you don't expect to score from.
Kone. Took a good goal but I don't think scoring a pen counts for too much in this MotM.
Edwards. Looking good, but we looked rattled at the back by a poor team that struggles to score.

Really happy for Kone to get a brace today. At 4-1 I was feeling a bit sorry for him as he'd played well but if you're the main striker and haven't scored any of your teams 4 goals then you couldn't be blamed for feeling a little aggrieved.
I was a bit worried for him when he stepped up for the pen but he buried it. And his 2nd was a great finish. Very happy for him.
But Edwards just shaded it for me - thought he looked a cut above all game. |
On the West London pod they talked about needing to rest Kone and maybe just give him 60 minutes. I thought that sounded very sensible, but he really took his chances in those last few minutes. Very glad he stayed on - he deserved those goals for his effort as much as anything.
