Exactly! Although I notice that Obikwu is finally back in training. Plenty of time to have an injury before the start of the season.

Never knowingly right.

When posters remind us of fairly forgotten men - Celar, Santos, and sad to say it, Alfie Lloyd among them - it reminds you this squad is still fairly bloated in certain areas. Particularly strikers, ironically enough given our once long-standing dearth in that area. Am no expert but assume our ability to buy this window is heavily dependent on shifting some of these players. While Nourry has yet to land that big ticket sale he has done pretty well at getting fees for our dead wood. His skills might be tested with Celar given how his loan went

The problem with Celar, and possibly a few more in our squad, is that we can't afford to sell them at a loss.

Especially not now if our finances are stretched.

I'm no finance expert but as I understand it we have copied the Chelsea trick of giving players long contracts to spread the cost of the transfer.

The problem is that if you sell at a loss then all that loss goes straight into the current year's accounts.

So selling Celar now for a loss would further restrict how much money we have to spend this summer.

To me it seems quite likely we will have to sell one of our better players this window if we want some money to spend for squad building.

Interesting, didn’t know that.

Maybe the best we can hope for with Celar is a loan and at least it gets his (probably significant) wages off the books if not the original fee.

Yes I agree we probably need to sell a wanted player for a decent wedge but even these fringe players must really eat into the budget given footballing wages so suspect we need to shift some of these too

Yes, the super long contract thing only 'cooks' if you use it to buy the right ingredients.

I strongly suspect this is why Burrell and Madsen were rushed back from injury at the end of last season.

Get them in the shop window to prove their fitness then try and punt them around for a decent profit in the summer.

Burrell didn't cost much and after the start he made for us he could have fetched a decent wedge (minus any sell-on to Burton)

We have even signed Justin Obikwu as a like-for-like replacement (or so we're told! Has anyone actually seen him!?

But injuries have thrown a big spanner in the works of that plan!

Does that mean if we extend Celar's contract until he's 50 that we can eventually write him off as a profit?

I don't believe this is the case, although I'm happy to be corrected....
For example if we bought Celar for £3M and gave him a 3 year contract, then the transfer fee would be written down (or ammortised) over that 3 year period. So £1M a year.
Should we then sell Celar for say £1.5M in the third year of his contract, our finances for that year's accounts would show a £0.5M profit.
The previous two years each taking a £1M hit.

Any player sale should appear in the then current year accounts, but transfer fees are spread as the example above.

This is true, but if the contract was for 5 years, using the figures you used, we would still be making a loss this year. Only £300k, but still a loss.

My biggest problem with your post though, is the idea that we could receive £1.5m for him!

I think you are complicating this a bit.

The key word here was LOSS.

In plain English, if we sell Celar for less than whatever value remains to be amortised then we will make a loss and that loss will have to be booked immediately.

The loss can't be amortised over the remaining years that Celar would have been with us if we never sold him.

Celar has only scored two goals in the last two seasons - both in the same game.

I think we would struggle to get any sort of fee for him.

And we don't know how many years are left on his contract. He might have more than half of his transfer fee still working its way through the system.

Our finances appear to be tight as it is. I don't think we can afford to write off potentially £1m+ on Celar in this year's accounts.

My figures were simply to illustrate the principles behind the accounting rules.
Celar has been a playing and financial disaster for the club.
He must have really hit rock bottom if he continually failed to feature in one of the worst Fortuna Dusseldorf teams of recent years.
I suspect that we gave him a 3 year contract, with an option for an additional year. I fear that we have paid more than £3M for him.
I very much doubt we can get any kind of decent fee for him. Another loan to cover some of his salary may be the best we can do.

That's not my understanding of how it works, although I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong.

You don't take into account the years the player has already completed. That has already been accounted for.

It's the value that is yet to be amortised that has to be written off immediately.

So taking the example you suggested. If we signed Celar for £3m on a five year deal then sell him after two years the fee we received would have to be compared to the value of the three years remaining on the contract to determine if there was a profit or a loss.

So in this example we would have to sell Celar for £1.8m to break even.

And we certainly ain't getting that for him!

I doubt we paid as much as £3m for him in the first place but I could well believe he is on a contract of 4+ years.

We don't really know the numbers because the club won't tell us.

So it's all guesswork.

I suspect you are right about the club praying that someone will take him on loan.

But his last season was so poor we will probably have to swallow some of his wages just to get him out on loan this season.

We are agreeing completely Kensal!

Using the figures that Cheshire used, we would still have £1.8m on our books & a sale of £1.5m would give us a loss of £300k this year, as I stated.

Of course, I have no idea how long his contract is or how much we paid for him, but I suspect the answer to both is too much!

I totally understand the logic that you are using that we can't afford to sell/release him for financial reasons. The same could apply for the likes of Dembele, Saito, Poku etc. And whisper it, possibly Edwards!

You’re all agreeing!

If I recall correctly (and I could be wrong), I think Celar was understood to have been signed for c. Ā£1.75m. Obviously we don’t know contract lengths but I think 4 years was our preferred term at that point. So, if those numbers are right, we still have Ā£875k to be incurred as a cost in the P&L. And we’re not getting that for him, so we’re basically spending Ā£437k of the transfer budget this season and again next season on Celar. But they club will know that and have budgeted accordingly. I think they’ll just be hoping someone will take him on loan and swallow some of his salary costs.

He’s clearly a bust. That happens. Not every signing is a success. And if you have the one home run signing-sale, it covers a few failures.

That said if we were to sell Madsen for £7m this summer, reality it is really £5m because we still have £2m of transfer cost to account for (£4m spread over 4 years), which also means everyone needs to appreciate not all of the transfer fees we obtain is upside or there for reinvestment in the squad. Some covers the as yet not incurred amortised transfer fee we paid.

Agree with all this, though I think the salary saving would also offset some of the transfer fee coming back into the same years accouunts, which might lessen some of these or make them neutral effectively. So if we are paying someone £10k a week that's £500k a year we save, plus all the other add-on bits. I've no idea how much our salaries are, do we pay people £15,20, 25k? - would imagine Celar is on something decent so getting that off the books might make it worth it. I seem to remember you or someone saying are salary was nearly or more than 100% of our revenue, but maybe that's wrong....you'd hope to be able to reduce this also with this model, but from memory it wasn't going the right way.

I guess Field, Cook and Nardi would have been on decent wages so possibly quite a saving there.

If your model is to sell and buy cheaper to replace, I'd imagine logically the replacement salary would generally be lower. It might not always work like that of course, free transfers etc might skew things.

Yeah, getting loans in is clearly better than selling and realising the loss in year of however many not yet accounted for years of amortised transfer fee you have.

So, agree, loaning out the failures rather than selling them for beans softens the loss, no doubt. It ensures it is spread across 4 years so impacts the PSR calcs less.

But the problem still remains that you spent Ā£Xm and it was all cost, no impact on the pitch and no return on that outgoing. So you can mitigate the salary cost, but you’ve still lost all the transfer fee.

And because you’ve amortised it, you’ve actually spent a bit of next season’s transfer kitty, and the season’s after. So your ability to rectify or improve the squad is reduced.

It’s why, even though we might be fine on PSR, all the bets already placed with fees amortised means are ability to rectify mistakes or improve the squad relies on us regularly selling for profit some of those bets, whether we like it or not, and whether they’re our best player or not.

Regards the conversations about Celar, when to release him, the amortisation of the fees over several years and his wages off the books too, i get it.

But how did we offload Taylor Richards, Tyler Roberts, and others of that ilk. We managed to move them on or come to an agreement. Am sure negotiations are ongoing.

Up front we have Obikwu, Buŕrell, Kone, Celar, Lloyd and Kolli.

We need four maximum. Two to go. Celar is the first one out the door for me.

I imagine with Richards we paid up the lion’s share or his contract: just speculating here but I assume we wanted him gone because he wasn’t the best influence round the place. With Celar there is little advantage to us in ā€œgetting him out of the doorā€ if it doesn’t also get some of his cost out of the door. And as others have stated with greater expertise than I could manage, that will be extremely challenging
