| QPR Squad 2026/27 on 10:00 - Jul 4 by Stainrod | I imagine with Richards we paid up the lion’s share or his contract: just speculating here but I assume we wanted him gone because he wasn’t the best influence round the place. With Celar there is little advantage to us in “getting him out of the door” if it doesn’t also get some of his cost out of the door. And as others have stated with greater expertise than I could manage, that will be extremely challenging |
So how do we know Richards was a bad influence around the place and yet from what you are assuming, Celar isnt likewise. Theres no evidence at all, for either of those assumptions. And as you are stating you believe we paid off Richards long contract, but we wont do the same with Celar. As far as known, Richards wasnt cheap either. [Post edited 4 Jul 10:16]

I said I was speculating, I made pretty clear that I’m not claiming to know. But Richards would seemingly go absent (or at least not appear in training videos etc when there were no reported injuries). No idea if Celar is a bad influence. My point is that he is v unlikely to walk away from a contract with a fair bit of time left on it for free, particularly when there isn’t exactly a rush of suitors beating down our door. So getting rid of him for the sake of it doesn’t in itself benefit us financially

I'd suggest the biggest obstacle here is that flops tend to be on wages that no other club is going to equal.

Richards was released in his last year of his deal, so no impact on the realisation of amortised costs. The last of it was being incurred in that financial year anyway. The amortisation is precisely why he wasn’t released in prior seasons. And, yes, I think we paid his contract in full or close to, to get him to go when he did.

Well, obviously, Mr Professional. Again, that’s why loans, where we share the salary burden, is the obvious choice for a flop in this player trading, amortisation model. Who will want him? Whether they can afford/want to pay even half his wages? Whether the play would even want to go? They are all questions which present potential stumbling blocks. What you point out is the big downside of offering long term deals, because the odd flop is inevitable. But if you want to sign lots of players early in your reign, back your judgement, and have PSR constraints, long contracts and amortising the fees is the only way you can do it. It’s a gamble. We all hope it succeeds, but if it doesn’t you hamstring the club in the future.

A question for you Hunter as accountancy not my strong suit: presumably the calculation on when/ whether to take a chunky hit on retaining a flop purely for amortisation - doesn’t it depend to some extend on the wages to transfer fee ratio? For example, if (as stated on this thread) Celar cost 1.75m, if (and I am saying “if”) he was earning 20k a week (punchy but perhaps not totally impossible for someone signed with high hopes as an international striker?), might not the sheer cost of those wages make it advantageous to get rid of him even while talking a hit on amortisation? If at all possible of course without just buying up his contract

Yes, certainly. However, if you try to terminate a 4 yr deal 2 years in you still have to pay the player all 4 years. You can negotiate, obviously, especially if the player is desperate for game time, but you will end up paying most of his contract off. So that just brings two years of amortised transfer fee forward AND another full season of salary into the current year’s accounts. That’s even worse. You need there to be someone who wants to sign the player, even if it’s on a free, because they will be offering the player a salary. If it matches the salary you paid him, all is good. If they want to pay him £5k per week, and you are paying £10k, the likelihood is you will have to pay the player the delta to get him to sod off. Think of the Frey deal. The club reported that to be “a deal worth £500k”. That wasn’t a “fee” of £500k. They would have said “fee” if it was. What that was likely to be is where they basically took on most of Frey’s contract over the (I think) 18 months, which would have otherwise been a cost to us, but now wouldn’t be because we’d allowed him to leave for free and the player agreed it. I very much doubt Frey was only on £500k across 18 months, so we very likely also paid some of his contracted salary off, save for that £500k which his new club picked up. Allowing us to say “Frey left in a deal worth £500k because that is what we saved over the remaining term of his contract”. So the amortisation game has lots of upsides; mainly that you can spend tomorrow’s budget today and account for it “tomorrow” too. The big negative is you need to offer long contracts with that approach. And long contracts are a big issue if you sign players who aren’t very good. If their value doesn’t increase or you’ve overpaid on salary to attract them, you have a millstone around your next, which restricts what you can do on the player investment front in future years. Flops are inevitable so some big home runs are a NECESSITY not a nicety on a regular basis to make it work and keep everything rolling. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Or have we shat the bed so badly and think we can save some money here and strengthen other areas on perm deals?

What's the score if we take 'Trialists' on the trip? I know we can't name them in the travelling party until they are registered as ours. But do we lists trialists in the travelling party or do they just pop up out of nowhere on match days? I can't believe we would be going out there without a senior keeper. I'm hoping we have at least one we are keeping under wraps or are working on getting the paperwork completed.

TBF the behind closed doors trip to Spain the summer before last they published a travelling party about an hour before the first game, basically because Morrison and Santos were in it and they couldn't/didn't want to say that.

That's nothing; Mykhailo Mudryk is the classic from them, since, of course, they paid extra to sign him ahead of Arsenal. They needed him badly to show they were out of the Russian Roman era and were onside with the Ukraine war by signing the best Ukrainian at the time. He took the Chelsea Cashley Cole money instead of going to Arsenal and then, as we know, got a 4-year ban for doping. Total waste of money by Chelsea on that 8-year contract! Even if they wanted to play him, they can't. At least with Sterling that's their decision. I think they should force Sterling to play in the Champ, with some lowly team, say at 15th, for no charge, to really embarrass him, as he's not even worth a wage on loan. Probably to some team nearby so they can really rub it in. That's the rumour I read about on the totally reliable, never makes it up, FLW. So, it must be true and we should spread it everywhere to see what happens :P

You may think the club micromanages what WLS reports to that extent. I don't. I said at the time the language was most likely journalistic licence and the fact the club reported it to be a fee reinforces that. You've essentially constructed an argument based on an assertion - that the club didn't use the word fee - that isn't true. As I've said before, there are plenty of things on which the club's current management can legitimately be questioned. There's no need to make things up.

Not one of my favourites, sorry! Nedum was one of the more frustrating players to watch. A massive unit, but far too friendly during the match. Capable of being stronger, faster and smarter than most other footballers, but chose to be average?

That’s an extremely disingenuous post, kensalriser. What I have explained in that post is widely known and understood regards football contracts and amortisation. I used Frey as an example because it is QPR and recent. You may dispute that and say it was a £500k fee paid as well as his whole remaining contracted salary cost off the books. It’s beyond wishful thinking but believe it if you want. But even if you believe that, it doesn’t mean anything else I’ve explained in that post is wrong around how things work.
