If we’re loaning development squad players to non league football doesn’t that imply we already know they’re not going to make it at championship level?
I’d like to see a reformation of the old combination league. Easier to keep tabs on our own players, new and old, a proper opportunity for injured first teamers to play themselves back into match standard competitiveness alongside younger players who also gain a feel of that level of football.
Seems the likes of Chair and Poku virtually disappear off the map until they literally return to the team. Fans would also be able to chart where they are rather than this cloak of anonymity that pervades their comebacks at present.
The modern set up doesn’t seem to do anyone a service. |
I couldn't agree more about the combination league.
It kept squad players active in proper football matches, eased injured players back to full fitness as well as being a stepping stone for the younger players. The DS league matches are nowhere near good enough to assess young players or how close to getting into the 1st team they are.
I really am surprised that clubs haven't brought it back. |  | | |

With football's adaptation from the NFL of grappling and blocking, the chances for smaller or lighter players is sadly diminished. Physicality dominates skillfulness.
Tag wrestling in the box for corners, throw ins etc.
Too much let go by referees. Started out with good intentions, i.e. to keep the game flowing but has gone too far. A foul is not a foul anymore, if it's not enough of a foul!
Things that would have been called obstruction or a foul i.e. deliberately getting in your opponents way without attempting to get to the ball, are now commonplace.
The laws of the game, even though they have been updated, are routinely ignored.
Stick your body in the way, which isn't in the laws unless the ball is within playing distance, and wait for contact and then be awarded a free kick. Happens all the time, and has done for many years, when 'shielding' the ball out of play or back to the goalie.

IFAB Laws of the Game 2025-26
1. Direct free kick
A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
pushes
holds an opponent
impedes an opponent with contact
2. Indirect Free Kick
An indirect free kick is awarded if a player:
impedes the progress of an opponent without any contact being made
Impeding the progress of an opponent means moving into the opponent’s path to obstruct, block, slow down or force a change of direction when the ball is not within playing distance of either player.
All players have a right to their position on the field of play; being in the way of an opponent is not the same as moving into the way of an opponent.
A player may shield the ball by taking a position between an opponent and the ball if the ball is within playing distance and the opponent is not held off with the arms or body. If the ball is within playing distance, the player may be fairly charged by an opponent. |
I have often wondered how those rules have been overlooked at corners and free kicks in the modern game. Committing those offences outside of the penalty area is nearly always a foul and free kick.
As for Tuck being released, I am not surprised because he wasn't sent out on loan to FL side, but lower down.
He looked good against Brentford youths but never made the step up this season.

Agree they need to be getting decent loans to at least show they’re capable, but at the same time these L1/L2 clubs aren’t charity cases handing out games for free unless there’s something in it for them, i.e. a decent player that makes them better.
Then who’s to say they’re L1/L2 standard straight out the gates at 18, based on a few DS games on a glorified park pitch against other 18yr olds? Or is it more a case of “trust me bro, this kid’s mustard”..
Then there’s the argument if they cant show it at NLS level, they’ll probably struggle higher up. Or they excel through the levels like Dieng, who showed he was somewhere near 1st team standard by loan number five. |  | | |

If you're good enough, a Lg 1 or 2 club is going to want you - Chair, Eze, even Lumley had very good loans at that level.
If you're not, they won't. Exactly as you say, if I'm a League One manager at a Blackpool or a Burton or Wimbledon, staring down the barrel of a 46-game league season, three cup competitions, Leicester and Sheff Wed in my division, four defeats in a row and I get the sack, am I hanging my hat on Esquerdinha, Rocco Friel etc as the man who's going to play me 40 games in his position and I'm not going to have to worry about it? | | | |

It's why I just dont get the glossary "needs a loan" term......... in the main they simply aren't equipped to play a robust 50 game season and I put that squarely on the man/men selecting them as prospects for a Championship level club.
People can shout about decent players costing money and being out of our price range and I wont have it. Loads of clubs with smaller budgets and less attractive locations than us put together squads and prospects far, far more suited to our level.
