It will be genuinely interesting to see where a lot of the current development squad end up over the next few years. They definitely seem to be a step-up from what we have produced for much of the last twenty years. As said, at least 95% of these players aren't going to make it at the level required, and lots of the bigger hopes are those brought in from elsewhere/abroad rather than truly homegrown.
Watching the game v Dulwich Hamlet they were miles ahead technically of that level, and remember someone mentioning they sat next to a scout from Oxford City of National League South during the cup final v Brentford last year who said most of our players were too good for them now.
I'd expect at least some of the crop like Putman, Dyke, Dillon and Sutton to make decent careers albeit not at the level required for us (unless things go drastically wrong!)
That said I thought Harry Murphy would eke out a decent career but he looks to have gone from Bedford to Bracknell and been released again without making a contribution in National League North. |  | | |

I'd fancy an injury-free Tuck to bounce back and make an EFL career. The rest I don't think we'll see again. Actually surprised a few more haven't gone, the likes of Wilkie, Dillon, Friel, Dyke etc won't make it with us. Could have longer contracts though. |

Tuck being released is both a surprise and not a surprise. Surprising because he's always stood out; a lovely passer of the ball, plays with his head up, receives the ball on the turn, hardly ever takes more than two touches, keeps it ticking over. There's an awful lot to like about him, and deep-lying midfielders with his passing game are very hard to find. But it's not surprising because the knock on him has always been that he's very skinny even compared to his teammates never mind senior pros.
I know we've had a lot of 20-somethings hanging around past their sell by date in the past, and the DoF has publicly stated a cut off point for young players, but Tuck only just turned 20 and for me he'd be someone you'd be prepared to give some extra time to. But that's from the outside obviously. If I was at a local club like Barnet or Wealdstone, or going further afield one of the L2 clubs, I'd snap him up because I think there's real potential to develop and sell.
It does raise a couple of questions though. First, who is making these decisions, because the DoF has never kicked a football in his life. Second, Tuck has always been the stand out performer right the way through the age groups and into the DS, if he's deemed to not be good enough then it doesn't say much for the rest of them. Physicality would be my short answer best guess once it’s been established they’re good enough technically/ability wise.
Why it’s best under hype and over deliver, both individual players and the development squad as a whole. Winning trophies at that level doesn’t mean much. |
The Cup final against Brentford last year is a good example of the physicality. All the players looked pretty similar technical wise, but Morgan just looked a level above in terms of body strength.

I'm another who is fairly shocked at Alfie's release.
I really thought the only thing stopping him making the next step was physical development which would come with time and effort.
Watched him a couple of times and I thought his reading of the game, passing and movement looked like he was going to make it.
Interesting someone has said the cull doesn't include bods signed by Mr Nourryvirus.
That underpins my fears for what next season's squad will look like. |  |

Yes you can’t really tell how they’re going to do until they play at the higher level in professional football. It’s the physicality as well as the faster pace of the game.
I remember Michael Doughty for instance being good technically on the ball but his brain just didn’t work fast enough under pressure from opponents so he got caught in possession even though when he had time to pass he could do some terrific balls. But in the DS I’m sure he looked pretty good.
Maybe that’s what scouts are really looking out for as well as technical skills.

I think you have to go back 10 or more years to find one. Josh Laurent who went on to play in the Championship for Reading, Stoke and Burnley. And for this season has played in the Prem for Burnley. | | | |

With football's adaptation from the NFL of grappling and blocking, the chances for smaller or lighter players is sadly diminished. Physicality dominates skillfulness.
Tag wrestling in the box for corners, throw ins etc.
Too much let go by referees. Started out with good intentions, i.e. to keep the game flowing but has gone too far. A foul is not a foul anymore, if it's not enough of a foul!
Things that would have been called obstruction or a foul i.e. deliberately getting in your opponents way without attempting to get to the ball, are now commonplace.
The laws of the game, even though they have been updated, are routinely ignored.
Stick your body in the way, which isn't in the laws unless the ball is within playing distance, and wait for contact and then be awarded a free kick. Happens all the time, and has done for many years, when 'shielding' the ball out of play or back to the goalie.

1. Direct free kick
A direct free kick is awarded if a player commits any of the following offences against an opponent in a manner considered by the referee to be careless, reckless or using excessive force:
pushes
holds an opponent

2. Indirect Free Kick
An indirect free kick is awarded if a player:
impedes the progress of an opponent without any contact being made
Impeding the progress of an opponent means moving into the opponent’s path to obstruct, block, slow down or force a change of direction when the ball is not within playing distance of either player.
