Think we need a designated thread for general World Cup 2026 chat. There only seem to be the England and sweepstake ones so far.
Well that opening game got me nodding off nicely. VAR/the laws of the game the talking points as always. Well done FIFA. Not long before the highlights are just a reel of refereeing/VAR decisions.

It does feel it’s missing that last-game jeopardy though, especially when you can have multiple teams potentially able to finish 3rd, and out, in the last round of games. Now it’s a case of “i can finish third and still go through”. Some may argue it gives teams, like Equador, something to play for but its a tournament, teams are meant to get knocked out, not a 9 month league with play offs,

Aussies are through. Not pretty but international football is about results after all. Our next superstar is young Lucas Herrington. Our youngest ever World Cup player at only 18. Calm, composed ball playing centre back apparently being scouted by Barca and Liverpool. Like a younger Van Dijk. Went to school with my neighbours kids here in East Brisbane. Remember the name. 😉

That was an absolute punish of a game to watch, bloody awful. Like watching league one.
Paraguay are dreadful and a real anti football side. Australia were marginally better, but not by much.

Each of the groups have had something riding on the last games, you will always get a few dead rubbers in the old format as well.
Some cracking 2nd round games already, Morocco v Holland and Brazil v Japan looks good

Entertaining game was Turkey v USA, despite the result. Americans made nine changes and they still looked pretty good. Not sure why the Turks were so leaden footed in their previous matches, appeared sharp and well organized to me last night. Oh well, on to Bosnia.
