Is there real interest from Burnley to buy Ronnie Edwards, if so should the club cash in now or wait. Personally hoping we get a full season with him in a developing side and if we do trouble the top 8, surely his price would rise?

Look, I’m not proffering an opinion either way, I’m merely posting what an alleged itk has said.

Not having a dig at you, mate.

I saw the same tweet myself.

I mean, who really knows these days!?

This time last summer Chelsea, Villa, and Everton were reported to be moving young players around amongst themselves for inflated fees as a way to beat the financial rules (allegedly, of course).

Who knows what sort of financial chicanery we might see this summer.

But £18m for RE does seem on the heavy side.

Was watching a YouTube video with Kevin Maguire on it talking about championship clubs that could be in big financial trouble. One of them he talked about was Burnley. And these are the reasons why.

Debt Breakdown
Bank Loans: £105.34 million total (£75.3 million due within one year, £30.1 million due after one year).
Factored Debt / Proceeds: £37.03 million total (£20.9 million due within one year, £16.1 million due after one year), which includes a £40 million factoring facility with Fasanara Capital.
Football Creditors: An additional £111.2 million in total football payables/transfer instalments owed to other clubs.
Financial Context
Annual Loss: The club posted a post-tax loss of £28.5 million for the 2024/25 financial year following relegation to the Championship.
Historical Growth: The club was essentially debt-free prior to the 2020 takeover, but borrowings have steadily climbed through subsequent refinancing cycles.

He reckons that if they don’t return to the promised land this season then half their turnover will be debt repayments. Said that the American owners don’t give a monkeys about the club as a community asset but something where they hope to make lots of cash from. If they don’t go back up and need to refinance that £105million repayment next year then it looks like a big fire sale. The benefits of a leveraged sale.

Poll: Where will Clive put QPR in his new season preview

That definitely doesn't make good reading.

A half serious question is whether the bank loans are with The bank of Dave? I would doubt it as I can't imagine that they would have the capital to "invest" in Burnley FC, but he is a life time supporter of the club & has had a stand named after him for at least 20 years.

My biggest fear with Ronald is those plastic goons at their bus stop realise there's a classy defender in W12 and sign him for £12mill.

Within two years you just know they'll sell him to one of the top sixw@nkers for £100mill and we'll have forgotten to include a sell on clause.

I say stick with him and maybe actually build a squad that can challenge and increase players worth across the whole piece.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

I saw that.

He talked about the Blades managing their debt problems by the American owners selling the club to another company owned by themselves but this one is registered in Delaware which makes Swiss bankers look like loose-lipped gossips.

The company that had previously owned the Blades still owes a ton of money to the Saudis who they bought the club from but now has no assets.

Let's see how the EFL squares that with fit and proper ownership rules.

To the “let’s hold on to him for one more year” argument, it’s not just the risk of injury (tho boy have we seen enough of those to send shivers down the spine of our CFO), it’s the prospect that if you buy 3 other players with the money you should be developing 3 more players all of whom you could potentially sell for big bucks. In order to reinvest you do at some point have to cash in some chips.

Yeah, and the problem of "building around him" is that at some point we have to make some money to do that kind of investing. We've bought a lot without selling much recently, that can only go on so long as Hunter has pointed out elsewhere.

Unless this ‘Dave’ is an American Investment Bank then I very much doubt it. If they don’t go up this year then they really are in the mire. Parachute payment for this year is around £40million and then drops to £18million next year. Only two payments for them as they were previously relegated for one season.

Unless I'm mistaken, Factored Debt means they've borrowed against transfer fee instalments that are due to them in the future? Wow, they really are up against it with debt. How can that be good for football? I thought Financial Fair Play, Profit & Sustainability (or whatever they're called) was supposed to protect clubs from getting themselves in the sh!t like this.

I think there are two figures at play here, and it's important to be aware of both of them - what his generally acccepted peer value is, and what value he has to us.

I'd think that most people would agree that Ronnie is right now, all things being equal, a CB in the £10-£12m range, based on his age, ability, his potential ability, the length of his contract, the English tax etc. but £10-12m doesn't do QPR a lot of good, when you consider what we paid for him, the sell on clause that we'd need to pay Southampton, his importance to the team, the need to get a couple of replacements in from him, and the trading model which needs a significant sale/profit every year or so, not just a sale/profit - We'd probably end up only clearing a couple of million profit on a £10m plus add ons sale, and baring in mind our initial outlay, that's not a huge ROI.

So whilst his value on the Transfermarket websites might be £10-12m, his value to us is closer to £18m, as that would represent the sort of return that our player trading model is looking for, allowing for all other extras noted above. It's also worth noting that neither Brentford nor Brighton, the clubs we're looking to emulate, got into their position by selling their assets cheaply. They made it known that they were available for sale, but they would only be sold for the right price. Nobody would consider lowballing either Brentford or Brighton because they know it's pointless.

We sail fairly close to the wind on FFP (whatver it's called now) every year, but i don't think we've been in a position where we are desperate to sell for a while now, so why would we sell him for whatever transfermarket say he's worth? My Car is worth around £10k, but i'm not going to sell it to you if you offer me £10k, i'd need more to make it worth my while...

Can we not knock it?

I’m actually not quite sure how good Edwards is. He was outstanding when here on loan, looked like he had two left (or right) feet every time he played for Southampton and was good but not great when he joined us permanently, being caught for pace and out -muscled on a couple of occasions. I fully get the points you are making Jeff, but if you thought there might be a strange noise coming from your engine every now and then, you might take the ten grand.

Dave is Dave Fishwick, who is a resident of Burnley & managed to win a legal battle to obtain a licence to launch a bank. Much to the disgust of the banking/financial world.

There is an excellent film called The Bank of Dave that tells the story of his victory.

And it was named The Fishwick Stand. I've no idea if this is still the case, but it was when I saw our superstar Hungarian striker there in the first game of the season in 2006

For all the rumours re Handsome Ronnie, it doesn't seem that Burnley have the wherewithal to pay the £10-12m we would demand.

I think the trouble is, the football world is relatively small, so if Jeff thinks his engine is knocking, then the person looking at the car probably already has an idea as well.

Are they going to double down and try and get promoted, or cut their cloth and rebuild?

I'd say with a massive debt and owners who just want money quick, they will try it.
-- Have they done any asset stripping yet, I didn't listen to the Kieron McGuire pod?

Got to say i agree. But his biggest problem in these days of huge physical specimens is, imho, his height and size. He’s always going to lose loads of headers against people taller and stronger. He’ll be good for us but I reckon those limit his upside
