Afternoon all, Sunderland fan in peace here - dont usually make a habit of coming onto other clubs forums but felt compelled just to add bit of value on Dennis Cirkin.
Unbelievable signing for yous. Genuinely. You will struggle to find a SAFC fan with a bad word to say.
What sort of player is he? So he is actually brilliantly well rounded. Hes not one of these total modern full backs that are essentially a winger but cant defend. Now he is very good going forward and a real strength of ours in the Champ was that left side with Jack Clarke and Cirkin overlapping. He is quick and very technical. However, he is also good at defending to the point we have played him at LCB and CB (when short) and he copes well. Surprisingly good in the air for a pretty boy, brave as a lion, leaves it all out on the pitch every time, puts his head where it hurts. Big threat on set pieces. Used to catch teams out because theyd be panicking about Ballard but he is good at timing his runs and again brave - you may have seen it when he got knocked out heading one in.
Onto the injuries - I think this has been overplayed. Hes played a lot of football for us. The recent injury woes were from a broken hand/wrist and it kept him out for ages and when he got back, he had to get a second surgery which then kept him out even longer. Not great, hes had a couple of niggles on top here and there, concussion from being knocked out but its not like hes had an ACL/achilles or has hamstrings that are ready to blow up. The hand thing should be over and done with now.
Finally, we never wanted to lose him, the fans were happy for him to stay with us in the Prem and seemingly the club were too but he turned down several contracts and apparently wanted to go back to London. I really dont think its an exaggeration to seay hes one of the best left backs in the Champ, he was certainly one of our best and most reliable players who never hid and always turned up. Add to that he started several games for us in Prem during AFCON with zero pre season and never looked out of place and in a 0-0 draw with Man City he was immense defensively.
Enjoy him lads. He is a diamond and forever will be loved at Sunderland for dragging us from League One to the Prem. Hope to see him back in the Prem. | | | |

Not to be negative but I hope we're not going back through one of our go for it / blow any headroom for the next 3 years cycles. |
That’s true and I’m worried about that too. The only difference to last time which was the Austin/Johansen season was they were players at the end of their careers with no legacy. The hope is that even if we don’t get into the playoffs this season we could offload some of these younger, fitter players to raise funds, which we never could at the end of the Warburton years. |  | | |

Both Lamptey and Cirkin seem to have been very well regarded. Perhaps the signing of Dennis is less of a risk than Lamptey who has had potentially more serious injury woes, but great seeing comments from previous teams supporters with not a bad word to say.
Maybe our club is also assessing characters a little bit more also and opinions of genuine fans can matter at times as much as previous teammates and managers. When the players have talent, the club has greatly respected their efforts and the fans have said they would have rather kept the player, all lead to excellent reasons to help in recruitment. Think this regime seems to be learning fron one or two inevitable mistakes earlier in their tenure.
So far very few injuries, almost cover in every postion, players with potential, a few youth prospects , a good preseason, sensible outlays for new recruits and a bit of money for players no longer required, and here we are. Hold on a minute - the season hasnt started yet. All roads point to paradise apparently.
Never is a QPR fan more stupid than when they think the club have done good !!!!

Said it looks like lessons learned but we know nothing until the season has started. Looks good, but did say we havent started the season yet. So you taking my words out of context, but we have hardly any injuries outside of the
three just bought that are competive soon.
There has to be some negatives around some players we buy in, simply because of our budget constraints. | |

You usually find the verdict of those that have watched a player every week are a good guide and its overwhelmingly positive. Hopefully we can get/keep him fit because it definitely seems like a significant upgrade in quality. | | | |
