I get that he has to rotate the squad but 5 changes were too many IMO , No reflection on the players coming in but to change half the team made the game more difficult than it should have been . Making four subs at one time also disrupted us , When Cardiff scored Edwards and Varane had retreated into the back line . We were hanging on at the end .

Totally agree.
Look, it feels terrible to be critical after a win - which we would have probably given away last season - but Saito should have been subbed, the 4 changes lost our balance and we sat far too deep in the second half. I would have understood those changes had we scored the third, but as you say, we were hanging on at the end.
I'm hoping he was saving specific players for the game saturday, which will probably be our biggest challenge this season, but we need to kill games off and keep on the front foot.

I was happy with the starting 11, I was just a little surprised with the substitutions and the timing of them.
I was expecting attacking players to be swapped around, I thought Kone, Chair and Smyth would come on for Saito, Vale and Lloyd. I thought we were settled at the back and could go on to score a couple more. I wasn't expecting 4 defensive players to be substituted and I thought the changes would have come 10 minutes earlier.

Lamptey was full throttle the whole time he was on the pitch and I was relieved to see him come off, same for Kamara. Madsen I think might still be carrying a knock and needed to come off.
We can’t moan like stink about the number of injuries last season and then complain that they’re managing the players differently this season.

This is my one gripe about tonight. Pre planned subs (fine) just spread them out more. Too many at once no matter the quality will ultimately disrupt the flow of our game especially when we are on top.

100% agree but with the caveat he could have subbed 2 players let them settle for 5 minutes then sub the other 2.
4 in one go with 3 changes in the back 4 was a bit more risk than we should be taking and better teams would have punished that further.
Glad we got the points though and hopefully the rotation will pay dividends at the weekend. |  | | |

Bold move. Didnt really help the game but its giving players minutes on the pitch. Still really early in the season, managing injuries etc. . Its great to see some strength in depth and bring on some quality players, albeit probably didnt impact the game too much.
We was already sitting far too deep for a good 10 minutes before the change was made, but we got the 3 points. Job done.
How bad was Willocks final ball btw. Caused some issues on the left but flipping hell he had Toblerone boots on. [Post edited 3 Sep 0:03]

Absolutely right: looks like a new strategy to hopefully reduce injuries and increase fitness and if it results in a bigger squad of players for JS to choose from all season then that’s great.
Thought it was comfortable overall tonight: if we’d have taken just one more of the numerous chances we created we’d have been out of sight before they scored their goal and we were hardly desperately hanging on at the end.
We certainly didn’t ’get away’ with anything and are now well set up for Saturday after winning the first two games of our three game week. |  | | |

Although not the challenge we might expect from this Saturday, I thought tonight would tell us a lot about the manager and the team.
There seemed to be a lot of confidence on the board going in and I really hoped (yes that word) it could be justified.
Selection turned out to be quite level headed, no glaring mistakes or indulgences and I felt the team played with a confidence of a so far unbeaten side looking for their next win bouyed by an appreciation that they may actually have some class as a group.
The 4 subs changed the momentum but I can't really fault the decisions given the context of the week. In fact my chief concern was that they diminished the chances of Obikwu getting a run ;) | | | |

I thought the team looked very good for parts of the game tonight. Don’t really think the changes to the starting 11 made much difference, Kamara and Lamptey were very good, if neither are yet fully fit, I think we’ll see some special performances from them, we have two class players. We really should have been out of site before another worldly against us, we don’t do soft goals 😂
I agree changing four players at once and 3 of the back 4, did change momentum, but we still created chances to score more.
Overall another deserved win!

Yes agree about Burrell. Would love to see him start against Middlesbrough but he was out for the count at the end of the match having run his butt off. He could maybe manage the last twenty minutes though and have an impact that way.
One thing I would say is sometimes he was running for balls that just looked like hopeful punts. I was thinking that either we should not do quite so many balls like that to him or that he should not go after the real no hope balls; he’s such a precious resource so we need to manage him.
On another note did anyone realise that Adamson is apparently the fastest player in the squad? My son looked it up. Which is pretty amazing considering we’ve got Burrell, Lloyd and Mbengue who can all shift pretty fast. I thought he’s looked so much better in the little cameos he’s had. Well done to the lad for obviously applying himself and whoever has been working with him. I’m not an expert but it seems to me part of it his positioning is so much better. | | | |

I thought he got the team right, pace up front, Lamptey was excellent on the left and we should have been out of sight. One issue before the subs was giving them too much time on the ball around our box, better teams will punish us but it seemed to be a plan so we could get Lloyd and Burrell in behind on the break which did work.
The subs made at the same time didn't work, should have done 2 then the othert 2 a few minutes later, lost momentum during thats but Cardiff did similar and i thought made too many changes at the end and lost their momentum.
Far from perfect but a good win and could easily have been a much bigger win |  | | |

Four subs looked odd. However, I think two were forced on Jools at the same time he was bringing on his 'planned' ones.
Mbengue and Kamara both started hobbling just before the subs came on. Remember: we're managing Cirks, Kamara, Lamps, and Mads through until the next IB. So it was a case of, forced sensibleness...if that makes sense!
We still need to be more ruthless, because we'll surely meet a time when our chances will be limited. However, there was a period in the second half when we were playing some of the best football I've seen for ages. We could/should have capitalised on it; but first world problems compared to those we had this time last year!!

I agree that Adamson acquitted himself well again last night, particularly that chance he created out of nothing, very Burrell-like in using pace and physicality to win a ball that he had no right to.
I think with both him and Lloyd they look much better coached and also just a lot more confident - in fact I'd say the whole team looks like it has a level of confidence we've not seen for a long old time. There was a point against Cardiff where it felt like we'd attack, lose possession, then immediately intercept the outball and go on the attack again, and everyone had stayed high and was looking to pass forwards immediately. Last season half those attacks wouldn't have happened because we'd have dropped off to defend and then started playing sideways and backwards. | | | |
