This is it. These things seem to only catch up with the likes of Brand once they stop being influential. Katherine Ryan called all this out a long time ago.

I found reading the defences closing summary so depressing, it's little wonder so few rape victims come forward.

As for the 'found god' schtick, do me a favor. Just part of his more recent right wing grift in the US.

Would never have thought watching someone leaf cluelessly through a bible could be so entertaining

All of the above (apart from pseudo religiosity) will be relevant were a prominent TV personality and children's author to be revealed to have used his celebrity to be a sexual predator too

This will be a reference to "PPT", who on Monday lost his case for an injunction against him being identified, However the judge kept the terms of the injunction in place until next Monday afternoon an allow for an appeal.

That's not what they're calling him today

They'll report whatever generates most sales at that moment in time. Morals or scruples don't exist in Fleet Street (or wherever tabloids are now located).

If he carries on his floating-along-the-ground religious righteousness inside he won't last 5 minutes. The first time he does it someone will be straight on him.

Blokes who defend this guy because he shares a religion with them are the male equivalent of women who marry men who are in prison for life.

He was converted by Paloma Faith.

When I worked at MTV we used to see him a lot with his multiple different women, at least 2 or 3 a week in the office, I knew a few of them who slept wit him, always found him quite weird but women threw themselves at him. They had a mindfullness room with a bed in which we all named the Russell Brand Sex Room, he was in there a few times a week. Didn't see or hear of anything like whats come out this week but this was about 20 years ago

Not on all counts but enough to go inside. Good. Never liked him. Not even back in the day. Felt there was something odd about him (almost as though his over exuberant self-proclaiming sexual conquests was a case of hiding in plain sight) and not surprised when all this came out.

I was on a rape trial many, many years ago and they are incredibly difficult to get a guilty verdict from so there must have been some very substantial details/evidence in this case.

In the case of the one I was on both sides account of the situation were equally plausible. After a week of each side putting their case across, witness statements etc it boiled down to one word against the other as to whether it was consensual or not.
We were told that in order to give a guilty verdict it had to be proved with evidence that it was rape. There was no evidence at all to be able to do this so a not-guilty verdict was given. Not because he didn't do it, but because it couldn't be proven beyond all doubt he did.
It was an incredibly difficult situation as if you get it wrong you could be sending someone down for 8 years who is innocent or letting someone free who is guilty.

It’s no wonder the conviction rate is so low. I know people campaign to put measures in place to increase the rate but if you’re shifting the goalposts on what is required to firstly get someone charged and subsequently to secure a conviction then that has great potential to be a scandal a few years down the line.

This was about 20 years ago so my memory may be hazy but I do remember the requirement then had to be evidence based. We could not let someone go to jail on the basis of what another person said.
Eye witness statements (which took up almost half a day) were pretty much useless because they said "yes, he went into her flat".

He never denied going into her flat, he never denied having sex. He said it was consensual, she said not.

There is actually a lot more to it from both sides than what I have, or probably am allowed, to say on here so don't take what I've said as full & final. It was just a quick summary of something that took over a week to fulfil and to illustrate it's very difficult.

If things have moved on in order to be able to get a conviction (and it has to be watertight) then I'm all for it. Maybe Brand might have got away with it 20 years ago. I don't know the laws from then compared to today but I'm just glad he's been convicted.

I never thought much of him as a person.

Used to work with a woman 15 years ago, who willingly admitted she would let him do anything and everything to her. I never saw what women used to see in him and a man reported to have had nearly one thousand women sleep with him, clearly she was not alone in her thinking. I couldnt see myself what so many women back at that time liked about him. Found it very strange and to me he came across as very gay - probably an act though.

Clearly if he slept with such a vast number of women, many were possibly not exactly consensual, by weight of numbers.

A horrible man, no doubt anyhow, totally buying his own self image but the power of celebrity added to it.

Someone saying its very hard to pass on a conviction in these cases. Well a friend mine was on a jury of partner rape but since the complaint they were back together and married. The woman wanted the case dropped but it was already in process and my friend said by letter of the law they had to find him guilty.

Whatever, rape is a hideous crime, and Russell Brand will certainly need his "God" supporting him, as he will face time, although all criminals are being let out ridiculously early now.

Feel sad for his wife and kids. The reporters shouting at her that her husband is a rapist whilst having to go back to bringing up her kids knowing one day they will read and understand about their dad.

No one is a winner in these cases.

To be honest why do we never hear about all the good deeds going on in this world. There are plenty of brilliant things happening daily all around the world. 99% of people are decent and law abiding but we have to have this cr*p sensationalised day after day.

Everyone now is their own personal paperazzi. The world's gone mad and mainstream media has now expanded into the total jungle of social media thats out of control and unmanageable to bring back into any kind of decency.

i always said i wouldn"t be like previous generations, who said it waa better in my day, but it really was.....

"To be honest why do we never hear about all the good deeds going on in this world. There are plenty of brilliant things happening daily all around the world. 99% of people are decent and law abiding but we have to have this cr*p sensationalised day after day"

Two reasons.
1 - thankfully there's a lot more good than bad in the world despite how it seems sometimes so "man helps out lady across the road" isnt a unique or distinctive story
2 - we want to think that we want to read good things about the world but we actually want to read things that make us feel better about ourselves (because we are better than all these people we read about doing terrible things)

Both of these ultimately lead to the root of all evil which is catering to the above equals clicks equals money and this drives every decision any paper/website makes

6 years ago I was in a crown court case jury that tried a fellah for two rapes along with other various serious charges..

We found him guilty on the first charge as DNA 🧬 evidence had him bang to rights.. the second charge had no evidence so split the jury..

It was one juror who convinced us all to find him guilty mentioning the bar needs to be so high then and was a reason why some didn't report it..

His argument.. do you believe the girl who you believed was raped on the first charge or the rapist you've just convicted?

It was more complicated than just rape etc but we convicted him on that second charge

I have personal knowledge of a case where a couple met via a dating app, had sex on the first night (!). The woman told her friend how much she liked the guy she’d met the night before. She then sent the guy a friend request on Facebook. He declined it…big mistake. She made an allegation of rape. He got nicked. Fortunately he never got charged as her own friend made a statement against her.
Nasty old business.

Mate, you can't make the decision like that no matter how logical or tempting it might seem.

DNA evidence has been overturned before now.

Hypothetically, in your case let's say the DNA was wrong and gets thrown out. He can then appeal the first conviction but can't appeal the second because DNA wasn't a factor.

You have to judge each case on its own merits.

As I said it was a more complex case than astraightforward r*pe case..

Fellah was up on 17 charges and we convicted him of all charges on the evidence which included the DNA 🧬 involved in the r*pe..

They had no physical evidence he was guilty of the second r*pe allegation..

Hence the do you believe her or him.. he did it, no doubt in my mind anyway
