Clive you are without doubt a colossus for us I was on a family holiday on the Isle of Wight so missed both the Preston and this... and I don't think I missed much.... Never even got a chance to watch either game... but glad I never in a way... and that for a 16-30 malintabuk would have been inconceivable. Can totally understand where you are coming from re 2026 football... it is turgid, without character and basically a sham.... And while on the island I met a fellow R.... on Sandown Pier.... which was definitely the football highlight of my Easter [Post edited 13 Apr 7:10]

But I think trying to find a right back who can cross and has the recovery pace (like Mbengue) would probably be out of price range. I’d like Mbengue to be our starting right back next season. Surely they can work on his crossing? Goalie, left and central midfielder however…..there we could do with some improvement.

| A genre classic - Report on 08:17 - Apr 13 with 7585 views | thehat | Nice one Clive - The report was so much better than the game itself. As you say both teams cancelled each other out by staying rigid in their shape and both defences were well on top the whole game. It was one of those games where you needed a bit of magic from a maverick to unlock the situation. I actually thought that might have been Kolli in the second half but alas. One point from me it was wonderful to see so many families and young kids at the game. A couple of years ago I thought we were a dying breed with the oldies going off to that 'Great gig in the sky" and no youngblood replacing them. The last couple years seems to have had a real turnaround and the club now hopefully seems to be in a much better place for the future generations. | | | |

One small thing for next season with 8th being in the playoffs a win for either side would have put them within 3 points of the playoffs with 4 games to go. That would possibly add some urgency and interest to these kind of games. I'm not a big fan of the changes but can see why they are doing it when you get games like this.

With Mbengue it’s not just his inability to cross the ball, he’s technically lacing overall . His first touch and technique regularly slows or breaks down play on the right side. He’s a weak link and I’d be amazed if the club are planning on him being first choice next season if they wish to retain possession better and climb the league. Reminds me of Sinclair Armstrong but at RB, all pace and power, but zero touch and technique. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Although I've seen worse (some much worse) than Saturday's game over the years, this was an awful spectacle & every bit as bad as the two Oxford matches. The time that is lost in restarting was highlighted in the Sunderland Tottenham encounter yesterday. A free kick awarded to Sunderland just outside the penalty area & no "injuries" to be assessed, took 2 & a 1/2 minutes before the kick was taken! I'm at a loss as to why officials allow these acts to happen. Surely, it can't all be at the dictate of Mr Webb?

Full Stop’ and it would have completely , and sadly, satisfied everyone. Instead, what you have brought to life here is very worrying and intensely thought-provoking. As with your (and Simon and others’) excellent analysis on Championship finances (now picked up by the Beeb), this is an issue which hides in plain sight – just what on earth has happened/is happening to our National Game? Where is this all leading? I guess it’s because our season is completely over that we have this (rare) opportunity to ‘look up’ and consider wider football issues that obviously extend way beyond Rangers – the play-acting, time-wasting, energy-sapping, money-driven, data-led tedium of it all. And I can’t pretend there’s an easy answer – football, arguably, has been on this course since 1992 and shows no sigh of changing course any time soon. My only hope is that this fixture was the ‘sacrificial lamb’ to enable the team to save energy to go out with an entertaining double-blast in our last two home games – a forlorn thought I suspect.

Blimey, that’s unbelievably harsh. Weak link? Think he’s been a very good signing. I’m hoping the club stick with him at right back.

Nothing much to add about the game as I agree with the vast majority of your report. Two minor points, I think you were lenient on the whistle and card happy referee. Mbengue, I think was generally hurt, seemed to get caught in his face. Thank you for brightening my Monday morning with many laughs in your brilliant writing.

On the subject of Mbengue, am I right in thinking that he reached 11 league cautions on Saturday? If so, we might need to leave him out of one of the remaining games to avoid him starting next season with a three game suspension!

Yes, I was looking at the table like that this morning too. If I have it right, from next season 3rd and 4th go into the two legged semis, 5th plays 8th at home in a one-off QF and 6th plays 7th in a one-off QF. I can envisage those QF games being quite turgid, especially if your reward for coming 8th is an away game at a really in-form Southampton, say. If it is penalties after 90 mins I can see bus parking going on with the team in 8th to try and take their chance there. It is dangerous thinking going into next season that 8th is some kind of job done. To win the playoffs from there would take quite an achievement I reckon.

yes I think it will be unlikely a team in 8th actually goes up but you never know. A Derby or Wrexham this season would be competitive in them

Not harsh at all. He’s a good defender, and has been a good signing, but is a weak link on the ball and going forward. It’s there for all to see and has been clear all season. Any club wishing to progress into the top 6, and wishing to retain possession better, which is us on both counts as I understand it, needs to be looking at more quality at right back. Mbengue would then fight it out, as opposed to being auto first choice.

The language used may be harsh, but it's true to say Mbengue is technically poor. He brings athleticism and pace - both of which we've desperately lacked for a long time - and I like his attitude, but he's a squad player really.

Yeh that was the one, minutes 40-44. Put together about 30 passes, spent four minutes doing it, progressed the ball about three feet. Mind blowing.
| A genre classic - Report on 11:53 - Apr 13 with 6802 views | TK1 | Having sat through many, many deathly 0-0s at Loftus Road (and elsewhere) over the decades, I think it's important not to overplay it being a modern curse. It's really not. Sometimes it happens between teams with nothing to play for, sometimes it happens because there's too much riding on it. But it has always happened. There have been throughout years many bore draws. It's why the good games stand out. It can't be all champagne and chocolates. And for those saying they'd have preferred a 3-4 defeat, I say bullsht. If it had 3-3 after 90 and we'd have filed out watching 1500 City fans enjoying seemingly the best day of their lives on 95, it would not have been more enjoyable. Give me a 0-0 every day instead of that. As for the diving and play-acting...QPR's greatest talents Marsh and Bowles were masters at it. Wegerle and Sinclair were not bad at either. It's not new. Again, it's always been part of the game. As such, I don't mind it. | | | |

I was screaming at them to do something, anything with the ball. I would have been fine with them scoring a goal. Anything to end the pointless tedium of it all. It’s not football. It’s taking everyone to a mug. There have been worse performances, sure, but few where the disinterest and disinclination to allow a football game to breakout was as strong from both sides as Saturday. 8th being the play offs shouldn’t matter. There is professional pride, personal careers and a paying public. Got the ball? Try to score now. Don’t have the ball? Try to get it back off them. Do both well and you’ll win, look better, and that surely is what you want as a professional sportsman. Neither team did either. That Simpson’s moment was unbelievable.

I took my phone out to film it cos I legit felt like I was on acid watching it, and that no one would believe me when I told them about it - and then they nearly scored. absolutely typical
| A genre classic - Report on 12:17 - Apr 13 with 6704 views | robith | Also as someone who watches a lot of rugby - a sport where they have reshaped the game to minimise head contact, where any contact with the head requires you to be examined and be replaced temporarily to avoid people acting the hero - it is super jarring even though we know they're faking to see players hit in the head just carry on. Bring in mandatory HIAs for head injuries and watch this dry up quite quickly imo | | | |
| A genre classic - Report on 12:30 - Apr 13 with 6646 views | TK1 | I don't believe fans would have preferred a 0-1 defeat or even a 1-2 just to be "entertained". I just don't. It's not a West End show. And if that's what your Saturday afternoon requires, I'm told Hamilton is enjoyable. Losing 1-2 to a 97th minute winner by Bristol City in 2021 was not more enjoyable. It really wasn't! Many football matches are boring. Always have been. Always will be. Want guaranteed thrills and spills, lots of goals? Try ice hockey. | | | |
