Gut Feelings on New Signings 16:35 - Aug 17 with 9828 viewsAntti_Heinola

I always think new signings are interesting for how we feel about them, because as fans I have a theory our initial reaction to them is very seldom close to how we feel a year or two down the line.

Charlie austin is a good example for me of one I thought was a brilliant signing and was a brilliant signing and he was everything I thought and hoped he would be - and more.

But then you have Cousins, who I thought was a super signing, just what we needed, and was never really close to it.

I remember being vaguely excited about Trevor Sinclair, but he turned out much better than we could've thought.

I thought Danny Cullip was a perfect signing, and he was for about 3 months, then fell off the edge of the cliff.

I thought Clint Hill was a depressing signing - and Derry. Er...

I was REALLY excited about Danny Nardiello - thought that was a cracking signing. Awful.

I thought Park was a great signing, even as I didn't love the way it was done.

Alex Smithies I kind of thought was second choice to Bentley and wasn't excited...

Other than Austin, do we ever really know? Sometimes the worst signings turn out to be the best and vice versa.

Bare bones.

Can't pin that one on Dave Sexton, Wrighty. Frank Sibley was officially manager by that time. However DS probably doesn't get off entirely scot free.

I don't know for sure, it's just a hunch, but we played Bury in the League Cup the season before and it's possible that Williams played the game of his life against us and Dave Sexton may have mentioned to Sibley as his number two that Williams might be a player worth going after. As I said just a hunch.

Anybody see that League Cup tie in September 1976 at LR remember a stand out performance from Williams?

I'm pretty sure Sibley said that he had been impressed by his performance in the League Cup and that's why he (ie not Sexton) signed him.

Awful, awful player though when he was subbed and trudged off the field to a chorus of boos I do remember feeling sorry for him.

I thought we did go after Kennedy but as soon as Wimbledon and Premier League football came calling, that was that. He never did the business at Wimbledon probably due to the style of football and that signing was probably a bit like the Wells transfer to Bristol City in that it suited neither player nor club.

I was excited about Sammy Koejoe which didn't end well but also had high hopes for Andy Sinton which went better mainly as I had a mate at school who was a Brentford fan and he'd been raving about him all season

Like Clive, I thought Caulker and Mutch were great signings

i remember reacting to some NewsNow link that said Palace would beat us to the Caulker signing by going on Twitter and lecturing Ian Taylor about the necessity of signing "the sort of young pillar the club needs."

Gordon Hill, Mickey Fillery, Simon Walton, Andy Gray, Jordan Cousins, Aaron Brown and Tommy Doherty were all good players, who played well against us. However, for a variety of reasons it never worked out for them at the Rangers.

My mum sent me down the road to get the paper one morning, I didn’t come back with change for half an hour, as I bought and read a few papers when I saw that we’d signed Tony Currie! I still think that was our most amazing signing.

I was sure Ray Wilkins was a waste and yet, he was probably one of our best ever signings. However, we instinctively knew his signing of Mark Hateley was a load of pony.

Eduardo Vargas for me. In his younger days he was being touted as the next best thing in South America. The prospect of having him and Chaz Austin up front...

I still think he had some flashes of brilliance and is still clearly a good player for Chile etc. but we didnt see the best of him i dont think.

Park Ji-sung also had a great game at Wycombe in pre season that i went to and I thought we had landed a top player. Sadly not...

Thought once we finally extracted Cureton from the far East we would absolutely romp it. Had too many good strikers in the end.

Yeah, I wanted us to sign him years before.

Recent signings (not mentioned so far) that I thought would be the Dogs but ended up being only bollox

Rob Hulse
Andy Johnson
Sandro
Leroy Fer
Fabio
Jay Bothroyd

In the late 70's I had a mate who was a Man Utd supporter but would only go to watch games if I went with him, yes I know. The trade off was that he had to come to qpr ....

Any way this was at the time of Steve Coppell and Gordon Hill on the wings.

The Utd chant for Hill was Gordon Hill king of all cockneys which I thought was totally pathetic.

Hill used to terrorise defenders with his direct running and vicious shooting from outside the box.

1981 we sign him, wow, was I excited. Theres a train station near where I live also called Gordon Hill which hasnt moved from its location since it was built. GH the footballer was also a static lump of concrete

Heres another one Pascal Chimbonda

Andy Gray might not be recognised by some of our younger posters, and for just eleven games at Rangers none too memorable apart from

Two of the most sublime goals, and against MunUre

Thought he was going to be great for us

We're just about the only club he didn't score for.
Typically Holloway really, wanted him, didn't get him, signed Thorpe instead, then chased him again when he didn't need him and had no place for him. Sure I was excited at the time though.

I was at the fakes ground when he got sent off, he was fuming and the reason being one of the fakes players who was stood behind him shouted 'jacks' as the ball came their way, 'jacks' apparently means leave it, it's my ball so Cureton left it and got conned he then lost his rag with the fakes player resulting in him getting sent off.

You'll never believe this but we went on to lose 1-0 in a thoroughly dull game.

Fake bastards.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

The problem with Vargas & Isla was that they were part of a fantastic Chile team. Bielsa started the rise of this group of Chileans and he set the ball rolling for Chile in the late norties when the likes of Vidal, Medel, Sanchez, .

Apart from Sanchez, Vidal, Medel & the keeper Brava all the rest of that wonderful team were just average players like Vargas & Isla for their league clubs

My favourite other football team was that Chile team from 2009 to 2016, Alexi Sanchez my favourite non qpr player

Yeah I remember this. It was Steve Sidwell who was otherwise mates with Cureton so he was even more furious about it.

Happened again a few years ago with Nathaniel Chalobah at Watford iirc. "Jacks" was the codeword then too. Always wondered if there was any more secret pro lingo.

I’m quite optimistic about this Lyndon fellah, y’know the ‘Scozzie’. Something about his attitude that makes me feel he’s going to be a bloody nuisance to oppo defenders.

I don't think Mutch can be beat here. No one else just pretty much simply ceased to become a professional senior player, un-injured at the age of 22, after signing. Still only 28.

Admittedly I was watching from overseas but rarely have I seen a player so consistently on the periphery of a game. No urgency, no running, no passing, no tackling. He just seemed to stand on the field and watch the game go on around him.

Tommy Doherty from Bristol City, I thought he was the missing piece in the QPR jigsaw.....ended up more missing link. He always bossed games when playing against us and I expected so much.

Two signings from Manchester United for me.

I didn't like Ray Wilkins before he joined us. I thought he had rightly earned his crab nickname, having watched him in a mainly turgid England team for years.* How wrong I was - he was utterly superb.

At the other end of the scale, how on earth did John Curtis ever get to play professional football? I couldn't believe just how sh*t he was. I reckon Gus Caesar was better than him and I was at that Sunderland match.

*I wasn't born in 1983. I love that year for what it meant to the club and to me.

Suffering since 1978.
