Tsing Ma Bridge for me in Hong Kong. I spent three years there working on it 1993-1996 and it was by far the best job in my career. Build by a consortium including Mitsui, Costains and my lot at the time Cleveland Bridge.

Fantastic project and beautiful Suspension Bridge.

You probably know mate but sadly Cleveland Bridge went out of business last year.

Mid seventies there was a road bridge over the Charing Cross line (Bromley South to Victoria) on which someone had painted "Free Nelson Mandela".
And to which some wag had appended "With Every Packet Of Cornflakes"

Was there for years.

Again in the 70s, sprayed on the iron bridge that carries the Hammersmith & City line over Portobello Road, it used to say 'Guilt is the cop in your head'. Always loved that.

Same era, on three consecutive pillars of the M4 flyover as you approached the Chiswick roundabout, it said: GOOD - MORNING - LEMMINGS.

And finally, another favourite bit of graffiti, on high brick wall not a bridge this time, but near Kew bridge in Brentford, it used to say, in massive white letters: 'Elvis lives in our memories'. 'Elvis' was then crossed out and replaced by 'Victor' - Victor being a giraffe who died at a zoo in Hampshire, not long after Elvis died. In 1979 'Victor' was crossed out and replaced by 'Sid'.

London bound. Drive over the Thames on the M3 , Chertsey bridge to your right in the distance. Over Twickenham Bridge ,than over Chiswick Bridge. 3 times over one river.
And then over the Chiswick flyover. Four bridges to get to Shepherds Bush.
Chiswick flyover probably my favourite Bridge.. feels like a roller coaster..lol

I think you mean the flyover at Hogarth roundabout, PunterR. The Chiswick flyover is at the end of the M4 over Chiswick roundabout, where the North Circular road starts.

Isn't the Chiswick Flyover the one that was opened by Jane Mansfield, who proclaimed it "a cute little flyover"? Mad.

There's a sign stuck in the ground with the quote on it I keep meaning to photograph.

Good shout. I have been to see that - The Cevennes, where it is located, are wonderful, peaceful, spectacular and lots of rare and interesting wildlife - and it is an incredible sight close up.

As a child, this one always fascinated me. It still does:

Yeah, the Clifton Suspension bridge is a pretty amazing piece of engineering in a lovely setting, and a great gateway to the city as you come along the Portway. Love the Forth Rail Bridge too.

Favourite London bridges: Waterloo - for the design, but mainly the views, and Hammersmith Bridge, because it’s the starting point of my walk to the Cottage after leaving the pub. Never got on with Tower Bridge - possibly because of the colour scheme.

Further afield, I have a big thing for the Stari Most bridge in Mostar - stunning bridge in a stunning setting. I spent about nine hours eating and drinking on either bank of that river, and spent most of that time just staring at the bridge.

Big fan of the Aerial Lift bridge in Duluth too

I love a bridge.

That Stari bridge - utterly stunning. How do I get there?

Great thread.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

There's some great old railway viaducts in this country that carry railways no more but are still quietly sitting in countryside settings, merging back into nature and the landscape, awaiting trains that will never come.

There's a couple of great ones in East Leicestershire/East Northamptonshire near Lowesby and Thrapston respectively.

Presumably goes without saying that Stamford is everyone's least favourite bridge?

I have no idea if it is a beautifully constructed bridge, but the Orwell Bridge is my favourite although it is a selfish choice!

It reduced the time travelling in Ipswich by 30 minutes during rush hour. We just need another bridge or bypass to the north of the town now!

Ponte vecchio - those houses, do they have toilets or is it all medieval and you just stick your arse out of a window? if it's the latter, I want one.

I used to work in McCormack House (big ugly office building) right next to the Hogarth Roundabout.
About once a month a car coming from the Chiswick Bridge side would approach the flyover too fast, hit the barriers and the whole thing would be closed for a few hours while it got sorted out causing massive tailbacks.

Don't know if its true but I remember being told that the flyover was just put there as a temporary measure in the first place but the roundabout is such a traffic blackspot that they've had to keep it.
Looking out the window at it from my work I always thought it didn't look that solid considering the number of cars that go over it every day.
