Picking Livramento and James, given their injury issues both historical and since the turn of the year, wasn't brave in my view, and I'm now wondering: how close Radacanu was to being selected?

Stones is also a huge gamble (only started 5 games all season) and the Arsenal lads, especially Rice, look knackered.

I still think Palmer was getting there after his injuries and I'd have taken him, and from what I read of his season, MGW was unlucky, and Wharton similarly to be omitted in my view.

No matter who you're managing and the players at your disposal, they need to be robust enough to last the rigours of tournament football, and that means being physically capable of playing up to 8 games in five/six weeks, is the primary starting point when selecting your squad.

From his original squad, about a third of his outfield players don't look capable of that. I think Tuch made a hard task harder as a result.

Likes of Gibb White, Wharton would have just been squad players, none of them would have started.

I don't think he could do much about the right back issue, he doesn't rate Trent thats obvious and in all of his games he tends to go for a right back who can shift across as a third centre back rather than the traditional right back. I think we'll see Stones or Konsa at right back on Wednesday. When he started as manager he had Walker at right back but he was awful against Senegal and since then he made this tactical switch to type of player in the right back position

Palmer gets better with every game he doesn't play but he got a chance in the March friendlies and was dogshit, hasn't played well for England since the last Euros and has hardly played for England at all pulling out of several camps. He's got tons of ability. If we do fail this summer the press will make a lot of noise about those left behind but I still think it was understandable why he picked this squad.

Yeah I agree - that's what I meant by a brave choice. He's picked in-form players irrespective of their status. Past England Managers have been criticised for picking 'name' players when they are lacking in form and don't effect games for England.

But if they underachieve - whatever that means - He's tied his own noose by making those brave calls. The press will absolutely lap it up.

He didn't do a great deal in the 2 games he came on, nowhere near enough to earn a start

He played well against Panama, made many good passes the best would have put Rogers one on one with their Keeper without a foul from the Panama player who got a yellow for it.

I come back to the main thrust of my earlier post: all well and good we debate club and country form etc. but if the squad you pick is littered with injury and fatigue problems, you've made a tough job, a lot tougher.

I think the Palmer of May was better considered than the one in March to be honest. But there's a few out there who need to up their games to the challenge they're set to face.

But three at the back might be better, as the centre pairing look iffy. I hope he doesn't try Rice at RB.

Poll: Who should do the Birmingham Frederick?

He picked James and Quansah as his right backs with O'Reilly and Spence as the left backs.
What he should've probably done was use Quansah as a CB instead of Chalobah and then called up Lewis-Skelly as a left back (to allow Spence to cover RB) and also have cover for midfield

This is Groundhog Day, isn't it? Same conversation every tournament. If the manager had taken D, E and F instead of A, B and C and set up the team differently England would be doing much better/winning it.

Truth is, we don't really have top players. Argentina have Messi, France have Mbappe and Dembele, Brazil have Vinicius Jr. Kane is very good, but he's not the best. How many of England's players do the other top teams envy?

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Yes this is very true. Although I think Bellingham should be on that list with Kane.

Ultimately, though we have some fine players, we don't have a GK that will make a match winning difference, our back line isn't the envy of anyone, Rice and Anderson are fantastic but no better as an aggregate than midfields that Spain, France, Germany, Portugal, Argentina will field. Saka, Gordon, Madueke and Rashford are very good options but every major nation has similar standard options if not better.

Foden, Trent nor Palmer would really move that needle.

Kane and Bellingham doing other-worldly things is our only chance. If you're looking for positive signs they probably have been our best two performers of the tournament so far. They'll need to get a lot better though and it would help if whichever 4 strangers that are picked in defence could start resembling a professional unit.

From what i've seen so far you have 3 elite teams in Spain, France and Argentina, you'd be amazed if those 3 don't get to the semi finals.

After that you have a group of about 5/6 teams who could win this if things go for them, good teams like Portugal, England, Brazil, Germany, Morocco and Holland but 9 times out of 10 playing those first 3 they will lose.

For World Class players it's only really Bellingham who gets into any of the top sides.

I'll give you Bellingham, he's top drawer, but there's an argument he's not even the best midfielder at his club.

Maths and luck are certainly factors but you still have to be very good to win the World Cup, either in attack or defence if not both. It's not like the Euros where lesser teams have won it.

It really is. England may not have "really top players" (I think they do) but nevertheless they have been in the last two Euro finals, lost one on penalties and the other in the 86th minute. Nothing to do with personnel in either. Just luck (maybe a bit lucky getting to one final, a bit unlucky to lose the other).

Even in the last two WCs where they've not really turned up as expected, they've got to a QF and a SF. Lost by v slim margins each time.

Maths and luck, totally agree. I wasn't sold on the squad and thought Tuchel left a couple of useful clubs for specific problems back home, but it's still good enough to progress and surprise people, but only with a bit of luck.

You can't really tell how good anyone is from the group games, especially England. Spain don't look very good, but you know they probably are really. One country at least could surprise everyone still, looking at the pathways.Norway, Belgium or USA could all be dark horses for a SF spot. Morocco and Croatia got into the last WC semis, and neither were identified for those places after the group stages, where Croatia only won one of its three games.

Maybe I'm being harsh on the lad but I always felt Guehi could have done better for Spain's winner. He was ahead of the goal scorer as Spain attacked but somehow allowed him to not only get ahead of him but also goalside so was able to get to the cross first and score. Seemed to momentarily switch off..... or he was just knackered.

Don't get me wrong, there is a reason Brazil have won it five times and Curacao haven't.

But in the knockout stages there are so many small incidents that affect outcomes (Russian linesman in '66, Ronaldo's fit in '98, Zidane's red in '06 for example) that it's likely the 'best team' haven't always won it.

In a league they all even themselves out, but in a 90-120 minute window it won't always.

I can't stop thinking about the stats in one of the threads that suggests the best ranked teams still only have between 8-12% of winning it from the outset.

I wouldnโ€™t worry too much about pens.

If we canโ€™t beat Doctor Congo inside 120 minutes we might as well give up.

Bellingham has been outstanding in the tournament so far. There arenโ€™t many across the whole E
WC who have been better (maybe Messi, Mbappe, and one or two others). Heโ€™s a game changer and moments man.

Englandโ€™s issue is the defence and central midfield need to move the ball quicker both when moving the ball from one flank to the other and when playing incisive forward passes too feet. Too often we slow it down or take an extra touch which allows players in a low block to get set or get tight. Tuchel knows this. Faster and sharper which requires bravery and technique. Itโ€™s why I like him playing Eze in central midfield. He has the tools to do it.

However, as we saw against Panama if we play 4141 and leave just one holding midfielder with both full backs pushing on, our centre halves are exposed on the counter. Rice would help give more protection.

Itโ€™s Rogers who has played himself out of contention, IMO. Iโ€™d have Eze as a sub for either Anderson or Rice (whoever is playing worse) to be used in the event weโ€™re drawing or losing. Mainoo in the event weโ€™re wining.

Iโ€™d still want Jones in there over one of Konsa or Guehi. Personally thought Guehi was the worse of the two against Panama.

Out wide, Iโ€™d stick with Saka and Rashford for Congo. They got into good positions but their final ball was poor. If they can improve on that, weโ€™ll score. Score early and the tie opens up for us.

England can still be a big threat in this WC.

Nothing like the feeling of a knockout day, butterflies in stomach, can't think of anything else other than 5pm.

I know the usual club means more blah blah and it does for 90% of the year but this could be the best 19 days of our lives or just another summer depending on how the next few games go.
