Another shit manager, take off an attacking player and bring on a defender. Then do the same again and when we inevitably concede, we can’t do anything about it. Genius Although the players didn’t help him, they started retreating from the 30th minute of this game and never really stopped after. I actually think we’re just not good enough. Argentina are way better than us , that’s the honest truth. Will never win a World Cup until we learn to control games like Spain do. Hold your breath.
| England Thread 🏴 on 22:54 - Jul 15 with 2235 views | Stainrod | Found myself thinking of Warbs and his slightly tedious fine margins. If we had held out a few more minutes I guess TT would be hailed a tactical genius. But (and this is not pure hindsight) it felt as soon as he took Gordon off and went 6 at the back we had gone too defensive too soon and really we were only waiting for the inevitable. Would prefer to have gone down all guns blazing than that. A progression from Southgate? Not slamming TT as such a difficult job, but not convinced. Bottom line is we never had the belief we could go toe to toe with Argentina | | | |

Hey if we still wanted to try to win the game but still bring a defender on, could have brought on a right back such as Trent but we only had Chalobaoh left. A very stubborn manager that stuck to his gameplan, despite it being so so obvious that it was going to fail and bringing on Rashford and Toney on in the 95th minute. Mmmm They would have got two or three goals in extra time too. Taking off Gordon and Declan Rice and Bringing on Konsa and O'Reilly idiocy... [Post edited 15 Jul 22:58]

I'm astounded that he couldn't see that the danger was in midfield not defence.if you wanna go defensive bolster the midfield to deny space for Messi. Their forward had cause no problem

| England Thread 🏴 on 23:05 - Jul 15 with 2054 views | Hunterhoop | It was a tactical f*ck up from Tuchel. There is no other narrative. 2 midfielders and defender off for 3 defenders. A tired Kane, Bellingham, and Rogers dropping into midfielder with an exhausted Anderson. O’Neill as an auxiliary left back, Konsa, who had been a first choice CB, at RB in a back 5. We were in a 550 shape with 6 defenders on the pitch trying to see out the game. No out ball. No pace. No one able to get us up the pitch or keep us there. Two subs left unmade. Argentina offered so little before we went 1 up. Just keep your shape. Keep the ball. Keep trying to play. Tuchel changed that with his subs. Not the players. They react to the message those subs change. It’s on him. And what’s more annoying is you could see the changes weren’t working in time. And he didn’t react to that either. The goals were coming. | | | |

Messi played the same short corner three times before they scored their first and we did nothing to stop it. Anyone watching that game could see what was coming. Severely pissed off with that performance

His post match comments are going to condemn him. Absolute arrogance. Refuses to say he made a mistake, pivots to saying millions of other [armchair] coaches who know better. That'll land well. English media well known for taking that kind of arrogance well

Even if he'd moved RJ into midfield we might have had someting to close them down with outside the box. When they hit the post twice and we carried on with the Paul Hart stuff, it was inevitable. We made the Argies' job way easier than we should have! |
Purely on performance at the time maybe taking off Kane - who was blowing out of his backside and didn’t do a huge amount most of the game, the goal build up aside - and (controversial I appreciate) even Bellingham, might have gone better. Maybe Rice was done but once he went off we fell apart. terrible subs really

Sums it up perfectly. A manager coated for being defensive (Southgate), has just been outdone by Tuchel in terms of reverting to a negative, defensive approach. We had better players tonight, they had a better manager. What a wasted opportunity.

Yup. Rice for want of a better phrase is the glue in that midfield. I think Tuchel had got it spot on until tonight and at 1 up you need to either put the foot on the throat and bring on the likes of Rashford and make them think about leaving their defenders back. This was the alamo and we conceded both attack and midfield for an 18 yard 10 man block... for half an hour. They hit the post twice, Pickford made a worldie save, Spence saved a certain goal. It was inevitable. For once we probably needed to swamp the midfield and break them up 35-40 yards out and break on them. But... we'll always have Mexico. The best performance I've seen from an England team in my lifetime.

Kane did very little since Ghana to be fair .This game was crying out for Watkins with his pace he would have dragged Argentina back but it looks like TT does not rate him and thats stupid . In his defence Burns, Stones and that back 5 held Mexico out and it looked like that would work tonight. Pickford was excellent all night but should have got gloves on that equalizer IMO. The fact England lost on a cross is just bizzare they looked airtight on crosses all Tournament. England got to the Semi Final because 2 or 3 teams did not kill them off with a second goal they fell into that trap tonight its a bitter pill. Once Argentina got level they went for the kill and probably were worthy winners
| England Thread 🏴 on 23:33 - Jul 15 with 1714 views | CamberleyR | Out of the three semi finals and two finals I've seen us in (not counting '66 as still in nappies), I think this one ranks as a bigger disappointment than even the finals. For an hour we had nullified Argentina who had hardly laid a glove on us up till we scored. I really thought I was going to be seeing us in a World Cup final. As Rooney mentioned on the telly, after scoring, why not man mark Messi, take him out of it so it's 10v10 for the last third of the game? Rashford and Saka were the first subs needed because in full back positions Argentina really weren't that good. | |

Tbf I think we lack world class quality in our defence. For me, this World Cup, Pickford has performed heroics and i was never 100% sure about him but i think he has had an exceptional tournament. When we brought on so many defenders tonight, they all got in each others way. Messi had freedom when both Spence and O'Reilly were both left backs and then we had Burn, Konsa, Guehi and Stones, you could see when the subs were made they were confused which had which role exactly. They were all pointing in different directions. Calamity Thomas.. [Post edited 15 Jul 23:44]

Two apparently very good managers have not believed in England. Was their lack of faith correct? Guess that will be the question. And more crucially, how can we dominate a midfield?
| England Thread 🏴 on 23:51 - Jul 15 with 1533 views | NorthantsHoop | Oh dear England, went ahead went all passive and defensive and Argentina started playing proper football after all their dark arts mucking around in the first half. It was almost like watching Rangers against Wrexham and Derby at home last season. The Argies are World Cup holders for a reason and they proved it in the last period of this game, their subs and play stepped up, we wilted and hoped to hold on. I do find Enzo Fernandes an annoying Chelsea cxxt and it had to be him who scored their equaliser. England are a good international team, but tonight proves we are not a great one and we are probably reaching the level within the confines of our ability. Spain will be a different proposition for Argentina they are solid and improving. [Post edited 15 Jul 23:52]
