Dunne off? on 21:44 - Feb 1 by queensparker | He is good though. He’s been our main attacking threat in a run of games that put us top of the form table, scored 3, caused chaos, made every corner and long throw a chance to score. I haven’t seen a player that dominant in the air in the attacking sense since Les (and posh Matt Smith) You could see in today’s game we weren’t hanging corners to the back post where Dunne would win them every time He’ll be a loss to this team no doubt, it’s a real shame |
He can't pass, he is not good technically and not that quick. Bumped out to right back because he is ropey down the centre. Players like this don't improve your team. He isn't even going to Sheff Utd as a first choice, he's being bought because Wilder can't possibly play a few games without his first choice centre backs.

We missed him today and he would have definitely won the header that led to their 2nd goal .
Dunne off? on 22:19 - Feb 1 with 2345 views | Hoopsie | IIRC, when Dunne was shifted to the right, he was at a crossroad - if he failed to impress, that would be his end of it at that stage. But he did spectacularly after an initial bump and never looked back, made right back his position even ahead of players naturally playing in that position. And he was an outlet for goal kicks (Begovic was ropey) and also Dunne became an attacking aerial threat as well in free kicks and corners into the box and scored a few goals including that worldie versus Brum Now that was partly down to the player but a major part was Marti’s willingness to experiment and gave Dunne a new lease of life at QPR. Would anyone have given him a contract extension before this miraculous change not to mention an improved terms at that. I think that answer is a resounding no. Is he a loss, I bet you he will be, but in the short term at least for now in a few games where we as a team needs to recalibrate and give ourselves a new focus and confidence. If Dunne goes, he will be missed, but I am sure Marti will find a way to play without him and perhaps he could make another Dunne with one of squad player hitting a crossroad at this point in his career. EDB? Madsen? Not necessarily at right back though Playing Edwards at right back tells me that position is a weak link and Dunne is 90% going, it could be Ashby starting if Dunne is not feeling 100%. They are trying out if Edwards could be playing Marti’s “Dunne” strategy. Perhaps we might find another way rather that relying on Dunne as an attacking focus. I am sure Marti can conjure up something special. I credit Marti in transforming Dunne. We move on (if he moves on) [Post edited 1 Feb 22:53]

Well if he leaves he's not going to win it. Although I'm not sure who would. Nardi maybe?
Dunne off? on 22:35 - Feb 1 with 2167 views | RangersDave | To be fair, Nardi worries me with his distribution at the back and his lack of positional sight of all the players. twice or more this last week has seen Nardi distribute awfully almost causing runs on our goal that could have been catastrophic. A better keeper or a keeper coach might not be a bad idea in itself.

Agree Connell There is no denying Dunne has been the heartbeat of the team - £2 million is not a big sum of money in today's game, and apparently we paid more for Madsen and Celar so it's hardly bonanza time.. The thing about this, that is stupid, if Dunne has been sold, we have recently sold another right back and the only other one remaining has been poor and a loan too. He could cover centre back too and Cook, Morrison JCS and Fox all injury prone and Edwards a loan. Jimmy also is generally an ever present. But none of that would matter, if we brought in a like for like replacement but no noise about this and two days left in the window. I appreciate play offs are distant and promotion potentially way too early, but the sales with no replacement shows ZERO ambition. Going to a much more upwardly mobile club in Sheffield Utd FFS. Ok if he is being paid more at Sheffield in their offer. Pay him..But no. The position of 16th is ours !! But yes rock up all those that are happy with that because all those that ourselves doing this now, that's what you are happy with !! What an achievement !!! Days like this, that i realise this club is consistently never going to amount to anything at all. ZERO AMBITION !!! If others can explain this as showing ambition, am all ears.... And although some are already saying we won't miss him if he is going - we all know we will..... As there is no replacement... If you going to sell, there needs to be a suitable alternative... Who is that then ?. [Post edited 2 Feb 0:13]

Dunne off? on 00:47 - Feb 2 with 1582 views | CiderwithRsie | Slightly off the point, but it struck me today that Dunne is sort-of the reverse Paul Parker. Parker was known as a right-back at Fulham, then Jim Smith (or more likely Peter Shrives IMO) hit on playing him in central defence. In an era when the big target man striker was king and centre halves were all massive you could see the puzzlement in opposing teams when, e.g, Kevin Sharpe won nothing in the air as little Parker soared above them. Dunne looks exactly like a centre half of that era and has had his moments in that position but has really hit form as a right back. My point is that Parker's centre half form at QPR got him into the England side and a big money move to Man Utd, and in both cases they played him at right back, where he was decent and never looked out of place in those teams, but frankly he was never as dominant as he was when he payed for us. I'm willing to bet that if Dunne goes to Sheff Utd they play him in central defence and he'll be OK but never the cult hero he is for us as the Irish Cafu.
Dunne off? on 00:52 - Feb 2 with 1552 views | GaryHaddock | Positive spin: It could still be possible that he HAS signed a new deal, with the plan being to announce it on a rainy day, and coincidently SU or whoever made an offer in between. Seems brave to turn down £2m on a player with 6 months left. Maybe that bravery comes from knowing he’s tied down for a few years. Maybe it’s PR bollocks. You never know with this hall of mirrors club.

The issue being as stated if that is the case, don't sell your other right back, leave yourself with just a loan player in that position and so many injury prone centre backs where again you losing an ever present player who like others have said, has been clear POTY so far and given you years of great service. But losing him now, would be criminal, as its like saying we don't care about outside chance of playoffs as we prepared to let him go without replacing him.Thats where it would be ZERO AMBITION. Yes there is also the scenario, that they start Tuesday game with him announcing his extended contract, but again, saying he is injured, allowing the speculation, and then doing that STINKS. Wonder how many games this groin injury keeps him out for. And the bloke just lost his dad and played out of his skin for us. I don't like what QPR have done here, whatever way it pans out. Really? What clubs over the past 4 years has shown any interest in signing Dunne? None. He has had 1 good year out of 4, and that is down to the coach. Marti & Nourry deserve a fcking medal each if we can get £2m for him. I like my players to have a little more than being able to head and tackle and thump their chest/badge, but the bar has been pretty low for the past few years. I can see why some fans think he is great, and why Wilder wants him. If we can sell Dunne, release Cook, move Morgan to replace Field, and find a replacement for Smyth we will be 100x a better team.

Great shout. As quality as Ferguson was as a manager, taking one of the finest centre backs I've ever seen and playing him at right back was a total travesty. As you say, his height was never a problem. Saw him take the evil Fashanu out of the game at Plough Lane in 88 I think, who got so frustrated he literally threw Parker into the crowd. God, how I hated that Wimbledon side.

Cook will probably be released in the summer anyway. Yes, I would want Field and Smyth sold. They just are not very good footballers, like Dunne. They all work very very hard to make the most of their talent, and Taylor Richards should look at them to see what he should be doing, so I'm not questioning that. My issue is that if we want to be pushing for promotion we can't be constantly giving the ball away. Dunne, Cook, Field and Smyth do and we'll never move forward whilst relying on that type of player. So yep, I'm hopeful we will have upgrades in the summer on all of them.

Where are these players who have the work rate and attitude of Field, Smyth and Cook but can also pop it about? Presumably if Field and co can carve out a decent career at championship level, the players you're talking about would be playing at premier league level or certainly at parachute club money level. We got lucky with Morgan and there's bound to be interest in him from bigger clubs over the summer. We've shown we're not very good at spending money on players. We could very easily replace three hard working top pros with a bunch of Madsens and Dozzells. It's interesting that when a few results go against us, suddenly these players aren't up to it. I believe the truth is that games are won and lost on pretty fine margins. If Fox didn't switch off for the second goal then we're probably looking at a different result. If Paal's free kick against Wednesday goes in the top corner rather than hitting the post then we probably win that game. We've been on the wrong side of those fine margins the last two games. Hopefully we get it right on Tuesday.

I admire your optimism that we could find better Championship footballers than Cook, Field, Smyth with our budget. Funny how people see it, Cook and Field are the players I would least like to lose.
Dunne off? on 09:21 - Feb 2 with 208 views | Hunterhoop | I find this thinking of “football” as only being when you have the ball at your feet. 95% of a game of footballer, all but one footballer on the pitch do not have the ball at their feet. Football is as much what you do without the ball as with it. Simply ignoring that part of the game is breathtakingly short sighted. We struggled at the start of this season precisely because we had an unbalanced side with too many players who were technically good with the ball at their feet but useless without it. We corrected that balance and went on a phenomenal run. As I have said many times, it’s not good having ballers if you can’t win tackles…you never get them the ball and have to play out from the keeper and you’ll never be winning possession higher up the pitch. Running, closing down pace, tracking runners, tackling, competing for loose balls…it’s all critical “football” just like touch, passing, crossing, and shooting are. You need a balance. The former is what makes formations and tactics work. Obviously you’d like every player to do all of those things really well, but that is naive. Hardly anyone in world football does it all, and any close only play for the top top clubs. Field, Smyth, Cook, and Dunne are very solid, reliable players at this level. It is ludicrous for a club of our budget to want to move them on UNLESS we get big offers for them or they run their contracts down.

There were a lot of people saying the same thing when we sold Darnell Furlong to West Brom. "£1.5m? I'll drive him there myself" - 5 managers have used 7 different players at right back since then and we're now reliant on a centre back by trade to play there. It's not as easy as just 'get a replacement"
