| West Ham tickets on 16:32 - Dec 19 by Juzzie | Same! There have been some really good new stadiums recently (Spurs and Everton prime examples) and just cannot believe how utterly bad this place is, if what I'm told is correct. Have the fans/club really sold their soul for this compared to the Boleyn Ground? I hear they give loads of tickets away to schools and others really cheap just so they can go on an on about how they are filling out a 50k stadium and what such a massive (innit) club they are. I'd wager their true fans don't number much more, if that, then who went to the Boleyn. Oh well, we'll see on the 12th! [Post edited 19 Dec 16:34]

I mean we'll do all this in the preview/awayday I'm sure, but the problem with that stadium all along was that it would only ever be a long term going concern as a football ground, and yet they kidded themselves all the way through that this wasn't the case. When the Commonwealth Games were in Manchester they built the stadium specifically designed to be Man City's new home ground afterwards. Perhaps because of the grief they got for that in the run up to the Olympics they repeatedly said that wouldn't be the case this time. Tessa Jowell was C&M secretary at the time I think and every time the post-Olympics use of the stadium was raised she would just straight bat "it's going to be an athletics stadium, because we need one" which was just obviously fcking nuts. London does not need a permanent 80,000 athletics venue. Nowhere does really. That idealism over pragmatism left you with what you have now. A stadium turned over to a Premier League football club anyway (as it was always going to be) at a terrible deal for the tax payer. A stadium that needed a widespread, hugely expensive, post games retrofit to get it vaguely into shape to host football. And a dreadful, dreadful football stadium. Absolute botch job all the way through.

Foster must have had a 10 meter start. I was in the North bank deep undercover like Kim Philby surrounded by Tony tucker and pate tate epping forest country club bongo bashers in windcheaters. Magic. I’d been out the country for a year and that was my first day back - straight to Upton Park and couldn’t believe how good we were. Remember singing to a gutted Martin Allen “you should have stayed at the Rangers”

32 years ago! we were like the 1986 USSR world cup team that day. Tore them limb from limb. Even the most bitter Iron was acknowledging how good we were. I remember some Hammer on the way out comparing Bardsley to Manny kaltz!. We had a great record over them in the 80's and 90's. [Post edited 19 Dec 17:03]

| West Ham tickets on 17:12 - Dec 19 with 1087 views | Discodroids | Cant recall the year but i remember being Kieth Moon 3 sheets in the east stand directly in line behind marlon Harewood , striking the ball like depleted uranium from 25 yards into the top corner. I politely stood up like a Norwegian Nobel peace prize winner and tipped my baseball cap in appreciation at the noble savagery of the strike. Obvs , being in the away end for the Fa cup 3-1 1988 watching my cousin being carried away like iggy pop at woodstock on the shoulders of the old bill while the groundsman threw horse shit over us is the peak sawtooth wave of QPR west ham for me. I thought the crowd singing 'shit shoveller' to the bloke was a bit much though! | |

It was mental. Proper panic in the away end. Talk about a crush. I came out of the ground looking flatter than karen carpenter doing the limbo. And i was about 1o stone in those days. [Post edited 19 Dec 17:16]

My understanding was that it was going be down-sized to a 25k athletics stadium (was never intended to stay at 80k) and the national team would move from Crystal Palace (16k) to there. They are now in Birmingham (18k). An utter balls-up by the Olympics legacy people and the West Ham owners utterly pulled their pants down knowing there was really no other option (Orient too small, Spurs too far/encroaching into east London territory) so they were able to get it for 2' 6" and some Werthers Originals. That doesn't make it a good football stadium though because it was designed and built to be re-purposed into a smaller athletics stadium, which never happened. [Post edited 19 Dec 17:37]

They hold 20% for general sale so they should be releasing 1800 more tickets at 7pm but almost 7000 sold already is pretty decent
