Maybe. Bennie has a physical presence but still feel even he doesn't know where he should play. Think Bennie ie definitely ahead of the other two currently - probably would be a steady league two player as is, but see what happens for him up in Scotland. I find this refusal to move Varane on a bit puzzling. St Etienne were rumoured to have offered £5m last season which, depending on the makeup of the offer, should represent a profit on a player. I’d assume they’ve subsequently improved their offer. Varane hasn’t pulled up any trees since he arrived and surley this meets the requirements of the game model to make a profit and move players on. Especially as we have cover for him in Kamara, Morgan, Isak or, at a push, Vale and a much rumoured new CM. | |

I think they're putting their faith in him, and feel he may be worth twice that after a (fingers crossed) good personal season within a (fingers and toes crossed) good season for the team.
I also don't think they'd turn down any real sort of money if it were offered. St Etienne have consistently been asking for loan and then an option to buy (probably then full to the brim of clauses and bonuses), as opposed to a block sum of money. We'd be insane to turn down a whole 5mil in one go.... |  | | |

Hypothetically it could have been £1m up front + £4m in increasingly improbable add-ons.

I don't know much about French football but I believe that aside from PSG there is nothing like the sort of money floating around that there is in English football.

It was fairly widely circulated that what was originally offered was a loan with an obligation to buy only if the club got promoted - and it didn’t. So frustrating as Varane was last season we would have been a body down, and for what? Have no idea what the latest offer was. Not sure I can fathom knocking back an actual bid for Varane, if it's *anything* more than a lowball chancing of the arm. (Or a loan to theoretically buy.)
From pre-season he looks to have lost his place in Stephan's ideal first 11, and that was before we bought Kamara, with another CM supposedly on the way. He's not going to get any more valuable sitting on our bench for a year.
From our side, if we can afford to keep a limited but decent-ish player like him as a mere squad option, great. But I'm not sure where our new financial wallop is coming from if so... [Post edited 14 Aug 14:11]

There has been a majority of posters that have been very critical of Varane on here. He wasnt the best last season, but like others have seen there is a player in there. Personally think currently he is selected ahead of Morgan, Kamara and Isak. So an important player this season. If we add another centre mid enforcer, he could possibly be sold, but i think he will improve this season
The deals been offered so far have been said to be - a loan with a view to buy for £5.2 million and as others have said the full amount is unlikely to he triggered unless a multitude of conditions are met I think the club believe he could offer something this season and appreciate this is me reading between lines, he could be worth £8 million plus later and at same time helping us with a promotion play off push.
i went to the Fiorentina game and it was noticeable how forward progressing he was in his overall play and they could have seen this in training. I do think with this player, we should trust the club to know the best outcome. [Post edited 14 Aug 15:22]

Holding for Eze/Hackney/ Lathe level fees for 5 years isn’t a strategy. We should be selling more in the Freeman / Smithies range. Imo that’s where the likes of Varane sit (but like original reply, not if that is predicated on a loan promotion etc etc). | | | |

I think the intention is to sell within two years, but we're not the only club trying to do the same. Pretty sure Varane (and a few others) would be gone if we'd had an upfront offer near £5m. We'll know more at the end of the season, which is when some of these sales should be kicking in. | |

I think Varane went into reverse last year in his development, dominated by his infuriating habit of passing backwards all the time. For those with longer memories, he did look very promising in his first season and, more recently, against a good Fiorentina side, he showed that he can progress the ball forward well, in addition to his "stopper" role that we see more often from him. I'd like to give him more time to see whether that Fiorentina match was just a flash in the plan or whether, like Madsen, he can blossom in the longer term. However, if we were offered guaranteed money of £5-8 million, it would be hard to resist. | | | |

Which is why I said it depends on the makeup of the offer.
I don’t recall Varane being any good in his first season. The only time he tends to have a decent game is when there’s nothing riding on the result. If he’s still as uncomfortable on the ball as he usually is after two years in this league then I’m really not sure that there is a ‘player in there’. | |

all depends if we are still holding out for the rumoured ten million deal for him when lets be honest hes highly unlikly to achive , id say a 5 /6million offer structured correctly would be a decent price for him. | |
