Hayden 07:30 - Apr 22 with 8489 viewsWilkinswatercarrier

Jaw droppingly bad yet again last night as he walked through 70 odd minutes.
Brought in (desperate) to offer leadership and beef up the CM but to me has been hugely disappointing.
At times he was 30 odd yards away from Morgan, hiding and offering no support to the youngster. Gutless.

Hopefully he and Varane are moved on in the summer. If they don't buy new CMs we are doomed to another disappointing season.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

He helped save our arse when he came in the first time. But then he was coming in with the swagger and confidence of a Prem player. He also played in. Almost all the games he was loaned in for. This time it's a season further on. He played at Portsmouth and kept them up and genuinely wanted to come here.

However, because of our set up, he's been a bit player and that doesn't help consistency or confidence. Also, you sort of get used to the level and perhaps think, is this as good as it gets for me? So perhaps motivation is another factor.

Overall, I think he is an excellent player, but when you are essentially 31 and you're already being used to plug gaps in midfield, it's possibly not what he signed up for. At other clubs, 31 isn't seen as that old. Here, he's now, with Cookie going, the oldest player in the squad, bar Hamer, who's on loan.

Never knowingly right.

Can’t we get both? Sell Varane and get in the L1/L2 player. And then release Hayden and get Brannigan in.

As I said I wouldn't be against signing someone like Brannagan but I don't think Nourry and co are in the market for signing 30 year olds probably getting their last contract with no sell on value even though it's patently clear that our squad needs a sprinkling of players like that.

Their strategy works just fine until they shit the bed…..

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Makes Varane look good.

Trouble is it was the opposite way round on Saturday. Hayden looked massively better than Varane when he came on against Millwall.

I feel very sorry for Stephan as I’ve said before at the level of inconsistency in the team. It’s not just the young players like Vale and Dembele which is a bit more forgivable and is part of the development of young players. It’s Smyth, Hayden, Varane, who are your experienced players who can be on fire one day and look like amateurs the next. Madsen, Dunne, Ronnie, Burrell (when match fit), Kone are rarely less than 6-7/10 and often better than that. The others switch from 4/10 to 8/10 seemingly for no reason as it’s not always after a difficult match or at the end of a three game week.

How can Stephan pick the team not having a clue who’s going to turn up that week? As he said in one of the interviews we have to be 100% to get something out of matches. 50-60% for two or three players is just not good enough.

Yeh a few times this season somebody like Vale, Saito, Poku or Smyth has come on from the bench and made a real impact in a game, so you reward him with a start the next week and... plays like a tart. Must drive the manager round the bend.

Yeah completely fair. Which is why I’d be looking to move on both Varane and Hayden in the summer. Inconsistent and we need more legs in there. I do actually think the central midfield area is almost more important to resolve than goalie and left back.

"If we really are on the beach now, lets see what Alfie Tuck might be like, because I know what Hayden is going to offer already"

Since coming back from a bad injury Tuck has been helping Farnborough stay in the NLS. If he can be released from their last game of the season this Saturday, I'd prefer to see him play for the DS in the London FA Senior Cup Final on Tuesday night.

Hayden is just too slow and disinterested now. Central midfield is a young person's domain now. Swansea demonstrated that. Get rid and play Morgan and Madsen there in the two remaining games with Ilemaheyu on the bench.

There's times when Vale has played and looked completely different level to everyone else on the pitch. Last night I forgot he was playing for long stretches. It's maddening.

I’d say goalie and CM equally. Walsh and Nardi both have poor shot saving compared to the better goalies - around 62% whereas the top ten goalies have 70%+. Also Walsh has a stat of around eight goals he’d be expected to save that he didn’t whereas the best goalies have saved eight goals they wouldn’t have expected to save. That’s a big swing.

I actually think he’s improved over the season and he has potentIial. But he’s not ready at this level and needs time out on loan. I don’t blame him as I think he should have been playing more matches in general over the past few years at any level. He hasn’t even played DS games and I don’t think training replicates match play sufficiently.

I like Hayden, limited but gives you experience, nous etc.. Last night he lost the ball and just threw his hands up and stopped dead. Abysmal.

I get your point on this but it really feels that Stephan is being told to field the youngsters first and bring the elders on afterwards.
Surely it would make sense the other way around - start with the experienced players, steady the game and then bring the youngsters through giving them 20/30 mins when the game is lagging.
The last two matches we've ended up chasing the game - losing Poku along the way and not really giving the youngsters anything to build their confidence around.
the addition of Madsen in the last two games has been light and day... he's oozed class when he's come on - why not start him and let the youngsters take over when we are potentially winning - or at the least drawing and not chasing our tails.

I think Madsen would have started if he hadn’t been injured.

But im not just talking about recent matches I’m talking about all season. It’s not just been slight dips with Hayden, Varane, Vale, Smyth, Dembele etc.; it’s great or woeful. And it’s not just one match it’s a couple of matches before they turn it around.

I see what you mean about not putting too many youngsters on early on. But really it was Cook and RND that between them ballsed up for the first goal yesterday. I don’t think Morgan would be starting if Madsen was 100% up to speed. I’d rather they brought him back slowly and the second half should be a bit less frantic to avoid reinjuring himself. But Hayden should be helping Morgan as the senior player and I think he hid yesterday.

I think Mbengue was rested to calm him down and also if he had got booked for the three matches left he would have been suspended next season for the first three. Kone needed a rest as he’s been flogged and I’m glad Stephan didn’t make the same mistake as with Madsen and Burrell. Sometimes you HAVE to rest players whatever people say about what happened in the old days. It’s a different game now, packer and in some ways more physically challenging so injuries are more likely, especially hamstrings.

I think Dunne would have played and Ronnie starting at RB if he hadn’t been injured.

Why not sign him,

They signed Hayden and have seen what Cook has done over the last 3 seasons?

Not every signing has to have a sell on value. I would like to think that even Nourry is aware of this.

Someone described these games as "post-season friendlies" and I think honestly that's not too far off how the club is approaching them. You've got young players you want to give a run out, you've got players returning from injury who need minutes, you've got players who desperately need a rest and shouldn't be risked - remember Saito picking up a season-ending injury in game 44 or whatever it was of 2024/25? The last thing we need is Kone or someone missing preseason because they did their hamstring away at Ipswich with nothing to play for. As fans it's obviously frustrating to watch us send out teams that are undercooked and players who clearly aren't up to it, but from the club's point of view it's a luxury of being completely safe long before the season ends.

I like the look of Alemayehu as well. Before coming to us last summer, he'd played some men's football for Djurgarden in the Swedish top league. He's got good ability but does he have the physique to play in the Championship? Perhaps we will find out next season.

We’ve not got good enough players for 2 in midfield, even when they’re fit. We get away with it against the poorer teams, but get steam-rollered against nearly all the better sides. Andy Sinton on comms last night continuously said how easy it was for Swansea to beat the press and play through midfield. He also kept saying how many times we gave the ball away in dangerous positions. If he can see that, why isn’t the coaching team doing something about it.

Hayden was drek poor and did not help out Morgan, who was trying, but Morgan needs a loan in L1 me thinks.

Morgan can do a great pass if he has time on the ball, if they press him then he sometimes gives it away too cheaply. With experience he can improve that side of his game, but he needs help and Hayden was nowhere.

I think Hayden signed a 2 year deal (just guessing) so, we have him for one more season. Field is defo better than Hayden. We are not getting the same player that was on loan and also he was more defensive for struggling sides like us back then and Pompy. Looks like the legs have gone to me and we know with Colback that means its over.

The poor perfomance in the middle affect the whole team. Adamson was decent in defence but offered noting going forwards, that could change as hes young. I still think hes better as a DMC. Smith was not up to it from what I saw, penalty aside.

The rest had poor games too.
We need a couple of Mowatts in the middle next season and then we could have team ... oh yeah and LB :P

Again with the loan for Morgan! I just don't get it.

He's made over 50 appearances for us in the Championship. What's he going to learn in L1? If he's not good enough by now it's time to move him on.

Mowatt's a good shout though. Just the type of player we need.
