I quite liked Hayden but he was neither nasty enough nor talented enough for what we needed. Sadly I think the same applies to Varane and Field. We need to have a balanced group not balance players like these. |

Hayden felt like a waste of money this season, to me. Just have Field do that role.
Hayden’s last few performances looked like that of a player who knew he wasn’t going to be here next season, or whose legs have gone, or both. Right call. |

Agree, I like Field, but boy is he a slow starter every year, he was abject in pre and early season, and with a new manager coming in the first impression would not have been great. When Cifuentes came in it was November which is normally when Field hits his stride.
I think we knew Hayden was off at the Swansea game, when he phoned in a pretty unprofessional performance IMHO he talked a good leadership game but I dont think I've seen it this season, tbh honest I expected more from him, so I think its right to move on and hopefully make space for an experienced midfield leader. |  | | |

Poor signing in the first place, done a basic job in the first year but was raved how good he was - he was just OK. Resigned, when he should never have been, but applauded and wanted by many on this very MB. However, this season he has been pretty poor but we had no option but to keep him and send Field out on loan. Poor play from most people/posters. | | | |

Yeh I was a fan, and the way that midfield looked against Coventry A I would definitely have signed him at that point, but he's been very poor. I wanted leadership and he just sort of went through the motions. In games like that Southampton away debacle I expect people like that to be the ones offering backbone and resistance and making sure that doesn't happen, but he was dreadful that night and then had a bit of a row with a supporter at the end. Poor signing, but I can absolutely see why the club did it and I would have done the same.

I agree. I’ve been one of Sam’s biggest fans but he really wasn’t very good in the matches he played in this season and maybe just didn’t fit in with how Stephan wanted to play either. If he wasn’t going to play regularly it made sense for someone else to pay his wages plus put him in the shop window if he’s going to move on. |  | | |

Some players have really benefitted from the Stephan 4-4-2 inverted winger thing - Smyth, Vale, Madsen, Burrell, Kone - and others really, really have not - Dembele, Saito, Field etc. | | | |

Without doubt the midfield needs new blood, Hayden is definitely off and I'm hoping we offload Varane back to France for whatever sum we can get, let's not be silly about the transfer fee and accept a sensible amount.
From my point of view there's a good argument to keep Sam Field, we all know he's a better player than he showed at the start of last year, he's a defensive midfield player. Somebody who sits in front of the back four, breaks up play and protects the back four, if I'm correct we've achieved the second highest goals against total this season, we have to focus on that and make it massively better next season.
So we keep Madesn, Morgan and Field and bring in two new younger players with potential who are attack minded, comfortable with the ball at their feet, look to drive and pass forward, getting rid of too much experience all in one go could well be a massive mistake. | | | |
