At the moment he is not commanding enough, does not organise his defence as a goalkeeper should parries/fumbles balls that he should hold and his distribution is not great.
He really should have gone out on loan to gain the necessary experience.
His being put in the number one slot before he is ready is not his fault but he does not inspire confidence with his performances.
Goalkeepers mature later than most outfield positions and you have to be something special to shine when young and unfortunately he is not. Nourry needs to accept that and bite the bullet and bring in an experienced keeper - it is a key position especially in the championship - it’s nothing against Walsh but you can’t hide between the sticks or be covered by others like outfield players can be.

Fair enough. I said that I wasn't sure if he was commanding. I didn't say his distribution was top class.
But what hasn't been addressed is my last sentence. If I were Walsh and I get replaced this Summer, I'd be off like a shot.

Phil Parkes signed for us in June 1970 aged 19 and made his debut in August 1970 at the age of 20. Just saying.

I'm something of an xG sceptic but disregarding that, I don't think you can infer that from one metric.

However, shots against are easy enough to find and we didn't do as badly as I thought - 15th, because of course. Shots against on target, 12th. Set against the goals conceded position (23rd) that definitely starts to look like a keeper problem.

Did I imagine all those times our midfield did a Marie Celeste?

Good stats. Provides more context, and, as you say, does strongly point to goalkeeping being a major issue.

Anecdotal evidence about midfield protection stands up in isolation, but not against the backdrop of that season long data, whether it’s xG, total shots, or shots on target. If the lack of protection was allowing easier chances (hence the goals conceded) you would see the shots on target being one of the worst in the league too as goals have to have been on target… Our year long ranking on shots conceded vs shots on target would actually indicate we conceded more difficult/less likely to score shots than we should. So, again, goalkeeper(s)…

Seaman though had played about 160-170 football league games in divisions four, two and one for Peterborough and Birmingham plus had also played for England U21s before joining us.

Unfortunately, if he did make that decision it would be to a lower division team - no championship team will take him as their number 1 in my opinion.

Maybe. And I'm not sure Cooper is going to hang around if he's not going to be first choice. That would leave us losing 4 keepers in the close season.

While Phil Parkes is rightly held up as one of our best ever, if you look at the old match highlights online he wasn't immune to errors or letting soft goals in. Maybe if social media was a thing back then he'd have been bombed out.

I agree that the stats point to the goalkeepers being a big issue this season. However two things can be true at the same time. I do think we also need to improve the midfield and wingers marking up. We do have teams being able to take too many free shots from distance which needs to be tightened up.

Not sure if anyone saw the PSG?Bayern match last night but it was a master class by PSG in not allowing the opposition to take a shot and if they did to shoot from awkward angles or in tight spaces. It took a great bit of skill from Kane to finally score.

dont go for all the stats etc but not sure if anyone can access and put up areas on the pitch goals where conceded from , edge of the box etc , that will give us a good idea of whos in the wrong , defenders not picking up midfielders not dropping back to the edge of the box to pick up spare men

He had already made 52 Football League appearances for Walsall when we signed him. That's more than Walsh currently has!

I've always said that I'd love to see a shot map as well, Wombat. Great point.

The next step then would be a shot map showing if shots were unopposed/under partial pressure/under severe pressure etc.

And them finally, if goalkeeping stats factor in these conditions into their algorithm.

I still think there's a decent GK there but his development has been handled appallingly. Whether he can get over that, and the now-established opinions on him, is a huge question.

He strikes me, and always has really, as a career number two keeper.
No shame in that, very good career. We've given him a season as our number one, hasn't gone well. Could give him another, but I suspect you'll be knocking 6 places off our league position if you do.
I might be wrong, he might come on a bomb for this experience, but I think he's very, very similar to Lumley in lots of ways - build, style, weaknesses.

Another thing about Walsh is it'll say a lot about our ambition/aim/budget etc.

Whatever you think of him, I think we could all agree you'd be lucky to get anywhere near the play-offs with Walsh and Cooper as your goalkeepers. I suppose Middlesbrough have with Bryn, but then their midfield is unreal and ours is pony.

So if next season the aim is the top six or pushing for it I'd expect them to bring in a goalkeeper. If it's not I expect them to stick with, but again this is a difficult message to give to fans- that we're not really arsed about the league table or either of the cups, we're running a footballer farm.

If by the first weekend of September we've got Walsh as our keeper, Larkeche as our left back, Mbengue covered by Adamson on the right etc etc you're basically saying we're a midtable side and we're happy with that.

We could also help him a lot, lot, lot more than we do.

Forcing a goalkeeper in shaky form, probably low on confidence, having a tough time, to do that fcking goal kick routine against teams like Ipswich is just outright vandalism.

With goalkeepers I like to look at the goals prevented stat which is basically xG on target minus the number of goals conceded. Walsh this season was at -6.4 while Bryn is at -6.6 which flatters Walsh because he only played half as many games.

Previously we've had Begovic at -7.8 and Nardi at -3.4 playing nearly every game in the season, so it does suggest Walsh is worse than these.

Jamie Cumming always comes out well in these stats (+9.8, +3.3), so with Oxford relegated we should probably be looking at someone like him, still young but with plenty of games, to come in and take the number 1 spot. Allow Cooper to challenge him for his place and send Walsh out on loan.
