if you have Dykes as your main man expected to get 15-20 goals (as we did) then he's hopeless but as a support striker who works hard and can get 5-10 goals for you, he's a good signing and I think thats what Millwall are after

as a freebie as this level its a no brainer. and way better than we presently have coming off the bench for the last 20 mins of a tight game, dont forget he never wanted to leave us and he and his family was more than happy at the club

Middlesborough spend £14M on a goalkeeper today.

I was just looking at Middlesbrough transfer income for the last 5 seasons. Figures taken from Transfermarkt so could be wrong.

To bring in big money you have to sell your best players. No one will give you big money for the older or worse players!
In a player trading model it is the selling that is the hard part. Price, timing, how you replace…that’s where the skill lies. I’m waiting to see how this regime does with that. They haven’t done it yet, but PSR will dictate they must soon.
Eze is the only player we have sold at the right time, at the right price, with good add ons, after developing him well (loan, then committed game time in the first team, then sold).

goes way back further than austin etc, wardley and darlington , spurs at the time offered close to 5 mill for the paid of them on the back of wardley scoing most games , we turned them down and both slipped back into obscruity
I think with the present bunch we have missed out on a decent pay back for varanne , i dont see his price jumping to much this season .

I doubt anyone does but I doubt there was ever a real opportunity to make a decent profit on him especially with a chunky sell-on clause to pay. His value so far probably peaked when he hadn’t actually played a lot but seemed a player who fitted the mold of what clubs look for. As much as I don’t rate him, I can understand why they’d gamble on his value going up and they’d have to spend money to replace him without an obvious option to promote from within. I get the feeling both the club would happily move him on for a modest fee and he’s keen to get out but right now we’re a good fit in an odd way with his career stalling a bit so not commanding a high enough fee and the calibre of club he wants to go to not being interested enough to pay serious dough.

How do we get to the stage where we are selling players for big money?
“Big” sources of income are your player sales and the parachute payments. Boro used their parachute money better, brought in players they could later sell for good fees. We bought Connor Washington and other duds. And it rolls from year to year, because you have less money to buy new players and so are looking at “punts” rather than more expensive but more guaranteed options. That’s why using Eze money on Edwards was good business for me.
Since we were last in the premiership, we’ve sold only Phillips, Fer, Austin (part of the Prem squad), Eze (only one over 10m) and Freeman for over €5m. That’s pathetic.
It’s years and years of poor transfer decisions and not making good use of the parachute money.
This season is massive, we need to have a good season to at the very least be able to sell some of players for decent money and reinvest and improve.

I am guessing their spend is higher as well but on the face of it that looks pretty impressive.
I was thinking that it could be largely down to the higher spend but having looked through their major sales.
Hayden Hackney - Youth product - Sold for £16m Finn Azaz - £2.5m, sold 18 months later for £12m Emmanuel Lath - £6m, sold 18 months later for £18m Morgan Rogers - £1m, sold 6 months later for £8m (and now just received £20m sell on from Chelsea) Djed Spence - free, taken from Fulham youth, sold for £13m.
So it's only really Lath where they spent the money to get a return. I think it is beneficial that Middlesbrough are often near the top half of the league which helps with sell value compared to QPR.
I'm not sure I buy the better use of parachute payments, they were relegated in 2017, they were still recently taking very average QPR players like Grant Hall, Joe Lumley and Seny Dieng between the relegation and selling players for big money.

All that money brought in and out of the club yet still in the Championship and its taken 5 or 6 years to achieve one playoff final. They're clearly great at identifying individual talent to buy and sell, but not so great at building a promotion winning team.
