Was it? A player has been banned retrospectively by a committee for preventing a goal by handball? I've never heard of it and I searched for an example and there isn't one as far as I can see.
I'm surprised people are for this but not VAR, which would have sorted it on the day.
As I say, I am all for banning players for serious foul play that wasn't caught on the day and banning them, but for handball? IMO no. |
Serious foul play is serious foul play wherever it happens on the pitch. A handball has different consequences depending on where it is... deliberate handball to score or prevent a goal is vastly different to a ball bouncing up onto someone's hand in midfield, and deserves different treatment IMO, including retrospectively. According to BBC online, 'Deception of a match official' was included in the LOTG in 2017/18 season. This is the first example of it being applied.
I don't think the player deliberately uses his arm to score. He could just have let it hit his body, if he had managed to get his arm out of the way. Having said that the goal should have been disallowed as it is handball under the current interpretation.
I think in this instance the player is unlucky to get a two match ban and maybe it will be reduced at the appeal. The FA needs to issue a clear statement that players who score or save a goal by foul means must declare the fact to the officials at the time. | | | |

With the usual caveats about xG, they’ve outperformed their numbers. Scored four from under 2 xG. But the numbers also suggest they’re getting shots away with five on target in each game and again last night which I doubt many teams will manage away at Wolves and home to Boro.
Also scored a very nice goal from an unlikely distance last night. Ohashi limped off early which is no bad thing. | | | |

I have lots of time for Mowbray. Clearly a top manager at this level. But everyone knew that before the season started. It was priced in.
Sounds like they might be playing more directly and quickly on the transition, which is catching these possession based sides out. We might present a more difficult proposition to them.
It’s early days, but it’s encouraging the teams people expected to run off into the sunset with promotion are struggling. Obviously in deepest winter when injuries hit, they’ll probably come to the fore, but it’s still interesting for now. | | | |
