Hey I don't the down-votes. It's all just opinions, after all.
Look, maybe I'm wrong, and it is only a friendly, I realise, but a few things concerned me about yesterday's performance:
1) Central midfield not looking for the ball.
2) As a consequence, we were forced back to the familiar sight of trying to advance the play up the sidelines.
3) Very little communication, very little urgency in our body language and sharpness.
We've been saying all of this for a long time now.
I'd like to see us address this in the pre-season.
Let's see what Thursday brings. |

I do care about standards, communication, hunger and trying to win one of the eleven shirts.

Pre-season has always been about building fitness and momentum gradually.
Attempting to tear it up in the first pre-season friendly is not how you do it. Getting as many players out on the grass is just the first step.

Brian any minimal chance of us having a nibble at the top 6 last year was ripped to shreds by about 85% of our squad losing significant time with soft tissue injuries. And you're complaining about them not 'fighting for shirts' and showing a lack of urgency one week into preseason in a meaningless game.
I'd far prefer us to lose every friendly and be at 100% peak fitness come the first league game of the season than players miss sections of their preseasons after busting a gut away at First Vienna in 30 degree heat on July 11th.

Wasted an hour and a half of my life watching this on the live stream. Hope for those out there, there is some action in the second friendly. Probably more action in the bars after though.
Not much to see, but thought Chair in midfield was interesting. Kemper looked motivated and half decent. Our third choice goalkeeper was solid. Ronnie looked like Ronnie and Burrell and Smyth were lively. Isak could be an interesting one but very early days for him.
I actually quite liked the black kit.

Hells bells we don’t even get the summer off from stressing about what hasn’t even happened yet.
I thought it was an okay effort introducing everyone new to the squad and testing out a few things against a team that was much further along their training schedule.
I also thought we looked like we’d met each other before by and large which was further along from last year’s efforts. I don’t think it Indicates how we are going to start in August because:
a) it won’t be the same squad in all probability
b) we don’t know what the first team will actually be
c) it won’t be a friendly.

Well yes, but without wishing to be the voice of doom, we have not finished eighth or higher in the Championship since
2013-14. We did manage a ninth place finish in 2020-21.
We're going to need a few more strong additions, especially two tough tackling, disciplined central midfielders, to hang onto all of our key players and for them to have good seasons, plus some luck, especially with injuries, to have any chance of getting into the play-offs. It can be done but it will stretch us  . | |
