ITV's coverage last night... 10:31 - Jul 12 with 19721 viewsGus_iom

Clarke trying to drive a wedge between manager and team in his immediate post-match interview.
Wright, Neville and Co. laughing like little kids pre-match because the camera panned on to Haaland's dad, Keane was in the room and it's all so funny, because, you know. Keane snapped his leg...
Fck off.

Edited to get name of interviewer right

For me, it's not necessarily when they retired that's the issue, it's the utter drival many people commentating on football produce, itself surpassed by the utterly inane drivel of whomever the co-comms person is.

However, last time I caught athletics commentary from the BBC, it was excellent and hands down, lightyears ahead of any football coverage I've seen on the BBC or ITV.

Gabby Yorath/Logan as anchor, top notch. Then, we had Ennis-Hill, Lewis, Ratcliffe, and Jackson who were just superb, and that's before the studio hands you back to Steve Cram (forget the other commentaror they have) who are both brilliant at their job.

All of those are long retired, and yet totally informative and on point! So, athletics can do it, yet football coverage is perpetually stuck at being hopeless.

Keane, Neville and Wright are definitely worse than usual. They generally offer something in the way of analysis for Prem matches and make a few jokes to be more entertaining. Not sure if they have been given a shit hotel room or something but they seem hugely unengaged and unenthusiastic trotting out the terminally obvious.

The BBC pundits seem to be excited about being there. Recent ex players like Azpilecueta at least provide some variety. And Kelly Cates and Gabby Logan are streets ahead of Mark Pougatch who just seems like a bloodhound who hasn’t been fed recently.

I agree with you about the athletics though. Usually excellent.

Very fair point, but I think you also have to connect with the kids, if at all possible.

I'm going to recommend cycling commentary yet again - they have the excellent Hannah Walker (34) interviewing the equally excellent sometime-pundit now Director Sportif Luke Rowe (36).

That has to help the sport connect with the next generation, I'd imagine?

Guy Mowbray is not far off Matterface’s level.
His voice reminds me of Ron Manager and he’s obviously got a list of pre prepared ‘witty’ wordplays ready to interject into the commentary which he sounds very smug about once achieved.
The best commentators at the World Cup have been the ones doing the ‘minor’ matches who generally just get on with commentating on the game.

Godawful for all the reasons given but additionally, what is the point of having an expert on VAR if you then insist she is wrong when you don't like what she's saying?

God knows I loathe VAR and I'm willing to accept that it may be wrong on any individual decision (or even most of them) but the woman was consistently correct on what the VAR decision was likely to be, and why, which surely was what she was there for.

He's a journalist though rather than a cheerleader, all he did was ask what he meant when he said they didn't play well. A bit of an over reaction to it.

He was deliberately rattling the hornets nest just minutes after the game (that we won) when the manager and players are still pumped up then he went tell-telling to Bellingham.
Snide reporting. Loads on social media saying the same.

Listen to what Henry said in the video above….. “stop going on about the players who are not here and get behind the team that is here. Do you believe in him now?”. When she replied (paused while thinking it up) “always have done” you could see he wasn’t convinced.

It’s as though the “journalists” in England go on courses and are taught how to ask inane and inflammatory questions because, as we know, that’s what drives discussion/clicks/views etc and it’s working because we’re discussing it.

Nb, what’s wrong in being a little bit of a cheerleader. They’re quick to turn the knife when things aren’t going well so why not join in with the fun after just getting through to the World Cup semi final.

How did he rattle the hornets nest?

Tuchel was quite strong on how poor we played and how lucky we were so Gabriel Clarke followed that up asking why were we poor was it menality. which seems a fair question.

Equally saying to Bellingham the manager didn't think we played well was again a pretty normal thing to ask although I do get the criticism there after Jude had said how well they played he followed up saying along the lines of well the manager didn't think so, he could have put that same question across differently but Bellinghams reaction was very good.

Both interviews showed the standards these people have, I thought they were great, I don't really get the anger over it all.

Some of the the written press have been awful in what they've written about Bellingham, Tuchel and the squad in the last year which is what I think Henry was referring to. Equally fans on social media slating this team and manager until the last few days. Tuchel was getting slated by fans and media for the squad he picked, just go back a few pages on the England thread and see the stick he was getting for picking Spence over Trent.

It all feels like getting on a high horse over Gabriel Clarke when fans have said far worse

I thought it was a bit ropey him selectively quoting Tuchel to Bellingham, out of context, straight after a game like that. 'The manager said the performance was crap, your reaction?' etc. He didn't really say that, did he? You could tell Bellingham didn't like that either. It became spikey in a moment that should have been a celebration.

But, in general, in a really poor field, Gabriel Clarke is basically the best among them. We don't exactly have the titans of the football press and media that we used to, do we? Where Sunday Supplement was compulsive viewing. He's usually very good, and you're right it's the usual over reaction to nothing much.

Tuchel, also, like you say, being vindicated all the way through. His weird, left field selections are coming good for him mostly (not you, Mandueke). Even I think Djed Spence has played well last few games.

He's been brought in as a finisher for Southgate's groundwork. Now he's got to finish. I think we'll beat Argentina... and then probably lose the final.

Well Tuchel did say the performance was poor and we were lucky, Gabriel Clarke wasn't the only person to say this. Rob Dorset from Sky asked pretty much the same question to Jude long after the game finished as well and got pretty much the same answer but hasn't got any stick at all. I think he could have phrased that question differently but just all feels a bit mad seeing people lose their minds over it on social media and on here, I doubt Tuchel or Bellingham gave it a second thought.

I think we'll win Wednesday as well and then it's about who we play. I think we can beat Spain, wouldn't fancy us against France

It was really poor. The fact were all talking about now and was even picked up straight after by the pundits in the studio, who tried to laugh it off.
To then tell Bellingham was a snide maneuver. I think the reason people have been upset by this, is because weve all seen the british media before string up England players and managers and how its effected our performances in the past. Given the work that Southgate and now Tuchel have done to create a good team spirit we watched live, an English reporter play a player and manager off each other to get a negative reaction. Really not helpful at this stage of the tournament.

Both interviews were really poor and intended to ignite flames. I always think there are three disciplines which a team needs to get right to put in a good performance - tactics, technique and mentality. It seemed pretty obvious to me that we were struggling with the first two pretty much throughout the whole game so why Gabriel Clarke should decide to question the mentality I found to be obtuse.

In the second interview that was really poor when he told Bellingham that the manager had said that the team had played crap and weren't good enough. Why not ask Bellingham what he thought ? You've got him there in front of you. Ask the man himself and engage with him.

Thank goodness I've just seen that ITV haven't got Wednesday's game

some call it snide some would say that's his job to ask questions. I don't think Tuchel needed to be as strong in his criticism of the performance as he was which prompted the questions that followed.

It was the answers more than the questions which have caused the issues imo. Bellingham could have said of course we can play better but we dug in and got the result but he was emotional and went a different way. It was quite nice to hear honesty from them both.

I don't think it makes the slightest bit of difference to how the rest of the tournament goes. Tuchel was right we will need to play a lot better if we want to go any further.

Didn't have an issue with what Tuchel said. He said our mentality was great, our performance, not so.

The reporter then deliberately omitted Tuchel's comment about the team mentality, just stating he didn't think we played our best game.

Tuchel, I think was trying to get a reaction from players like Bellingham, who would be motivated to play like, sod you sir, and up their game even higher, not possible for Jude surely, and also to ensure players did not get complacent.

But Tuchel was happy and this was not said to Bellingham. Good reactions from both for me and I believe we will do better on Wednesday.

Its his job to ask questions , not try and stir up the dressing room which he clearly tried to do here. Its just a game of football, we won . Storm in a teacup but seemed so unnecessary. Just an awkward moment. Not Gabriel's finest moment.
Tuchel and Bellingham are good professionals, im sure it wont effect their game.

Agreed, it's fine to ask those questions but Bellingham doesn't know what the criticism is because the manager has not talked to the team yet about the performance and what he wants them to do better. They've not been back to the dressing room and the interview was on the pitch. So without that knowledge, how does he expect him to respond? That's why it comes across to me as stirring rather than a genuine question.

I agree with DaveB it was TT's view that the performance was poor which prompted the questions. No real problem with the interview.

The commentary and pundits, I do believe to be inferior on ITV. It's not helped by constantly going to add breaks and references to pay to enter competitions.
However, given a choice between Lee Dixon and Alan Repeat Shearer on co Comms, I would go for LD.

Thats where I disagree, I don't think he is trying to stir things up, if he was he'd have lead with that or continued on that theme but he asked plenty of other questions about the character of the team, his own performance, getting to a semi final. He could have phrased it better but no one is perfect and he followed up by trying to end the interview on a positive note talking about the fans and his achievement rather than pushing that narrative further.

As I say Sky & BBC as well as Fox all asked a very similar question to Bellingham with none of the abuse towards their journalists.

I think this the abuse the fella is getting is miles over the top for the crime of asking questions.
Death threats now, calls for him to lose his job and all sorts over a bloody question. What a world this is.
