Lots of obvious ones like points, league position, quality/depth of squad, injuries. But the thing that has struck me the most is how proactive JS has become with his subs to try to change the game in our favour. 2 changes at half time today, and two more early in the 2nd half. Four changes in one go last week. Obviously that worked a treat today and didn’t quite come off last week. But last year he seemed to dither a lot more and it could often be the 70th minute or beyond before he made the changes.
I think this stems from two things. The first is that obviously he has a much stronger bench so knows he can make changes that can genuinely improve our chances of winning the game. But I think the second is down to him personally. He is a year more experienced with the Championship and has become more confident and assertive as a result. I wasn’t a huge fan of the man last season, but he is definitely growing on me.
The caveat is of course that we are only getting started, the whole apple-cart could be upended by a raft of injuries, but for now, it’s fun being a QPR fan again. |  | | |  |

Its about time Stephan got some credit
Cifuentes got so much adulation from the fans, but Stephan does his job tidily and without fuss. Think he keeps our heads right and stops people getting over confident, but also so far this season, the use of the squad has been excellent.
Doesnt hardly ever get his name sung as Cifuentes did every game. Time to give Julien some kudos.

Just so many more options now: the likes of Saito, Poku, Vale and Varane will all be thinking “I should be starting.” The one weakness for me is a striker on the bench who will get you a goal. Kolli would be that but this silly stand off makes that impossible. Maybe the Coventry lad will become that guy. | | | |

Most would have Madsen in it but Kamara improved us today.

I was blown away when he said he wanted more goals at Pompey. That was very different to the type of things he would say last season.

Completely agree on the rotation of players! I think JS trusts the players to do what is asked. Probably wasn't the case last season for more than a handful of them.
Good to see opposition fans moaning about their players fitness and the rangers seeming to get stronger as the game progresses. | | | |

Looks to me like everyone at the club has sat down and talked about what we need to do - I wouldn't necessarily pick out anyone in particular, it looks like a club effort to me. Also, looks like the new players have been integrated much more quickly. They all look comfortable. Last year there wasn't the cohesion through the team. It augurs well. I'd like to see a footballing centre forward in who can control the ball in the first half and play the wingers in, a modern day Chris Martin. Otherwise I think we are OK until Jan. | | | |

100%. His mannagement will properly tested this season keeping a large squad with an ever changing starting XI happy and harmonious. They seem like a grounded group of players though, which helps. | |

Good OP, which I agree with. I'd add that this season Stephan clearly knows what he wants and has a strategy he looks like he'll stick to. Last year, he had to completely change the season's game plan after the Coventry rout.
Most players seem to know exactly what their role and game plan is. There's a clarity to our play that often wasn't there last season. |  | | |

As other have said, a coach who knows the league better, a squad with no obvious weaknesses and a better kevel of fitness to start the year off.
One thi g worth mentioning that is a carry over from last year is that the squad feels together. They have fun, they like each other. It was obvious last year, but continued into this season. |  |

When you’ve got players who are comfortable on the ball, it can change everything.
I mentioned a month ago we didn’t have a single player in the squad whos tasted promotion, now we have Cirkin, Kamara. Add Lamptey in and all three have experienced Premier League football.
Training has probably changed too. Previously, the good player would stand out, now I suspect it’s the poor player that stands out. Creates a totally different mindset. |  | | |

Not exactly sure Wilkins why you had to put a negative spin on what was intended to be a positive thread and was until your post. Additionally, describing Field as ‘dross’ is unacceptable. He was a fine servant for the club, played in a number of positions without complaint and was voted our player of year a few seasons ago.

Absolutely agree. He just didn’t fit with how Stephan wants to play, which is okay and no reflection on him as a player. But he is a very solid player in the right formation with the right players around him. I wish him well except against us obviously. |  | | |

I think the defence are much more confident with Charles. This means they can pass back without concern and I think that helps us move forward paradoxically rather than being caught in possession or making panic passes.
Also they are not covering the goalie so much in the box like the time that Steve Cook and another CB (Jimmy?) bumped into each other in their brave endeavour to both cover Walsh. This means they can position themselves more to cover attackers rather than protect the goalie. | | | |

We look slick and quick, and we clearly like to get it forward asap too. It's really bloody enjoyable to watch.
That said: we'll have tougher hurdles to overcome of course, but credit is due across the board for how well we've improved since this time last year. Dare I say it: but we look much fitter too!!
If I had a wish however, it'd be for a Charlie Austin, circa 2013-5. Playing in that team now, he'd easily waltz to 25 goals.
