I don't know how you could possibly pull that apart as a data point from general trends in fitness/play style/whatever over the last 6 years, there's not really a control group you could find.

| Injuries on 17:17 - Oct 14 by queensparker | I don’t want to derail this thread into conspiracy theories and paranoia, so I apologise for what I’m about to say, but I have several family members in medicine and it’s a known after-effect of COVID that it can potentially cause issues to muscles / joints / ligaments / recovery. NOT the vaccine, Covid the actual disease. Given I imagine everyone in the world including sportsmen has now had the infection at some point, I wonder if this might be a factor. |

| Injuries on 14:27 - Oct 14 by Stainrod | Fair enough mate and thank you for clarifying. And not at all, me thinks (for what it is worth) you are a good poster…. Sounds like we are not a million miles apart in that case. Agree subs shouldn’t be entirely pre-determined unless someone coming back from injury; you are right there needs to be a bit of responding to circumstances in the match. I suppose all I would say is that we don’t know for sure that these are not Stephan’s calls. Or he might be happy to take the medical advice. He also has access to the in-play data so he might be being told that player x is running less or slower or whatever. Hopefully those in the dugout are working as unified team just like the players on the pitch. |
I think he absolutely agrees with the approach. I’m sure he actually said it himself at some point that he recognises the need to listen to advice. At one point yesterday you could see Smyth just missing a couple of balls where he’d been completely on it before and he was straight off. So yes I do think they’re monitoring tiredness. I disagree about predetermined removal of players though. Some players with their playing style will be more likely to get injured - so players that make a lot of sprints. Also it takes into account how many minutes they’ve played recently, and the amount of work they got through. I’m sure it’s emerged from the report they commissioned about injuries last season so if they’re following the recommendations from that then it makes sense to me. Burrell and Madsen last season almost certainly got injured from being overplayed and we don’t want that this season. Unfortunately we were not able to influence the Burrell one because of the frigging international break.

Well who knows? But the main difference brought in by Covid is the five subs rule - meaning that physical intensity goes on for longer over the 90 minutes (these days even more e.g. 100 minutes last night!) and players are working at their limit for longer. Hence all the soft tissue injuries and them breaking down more often.

| Injuries on 13:23 - Oct 15 with 1220 views | ManinBlack | When you have a three game week, it really doesn't help when they add on 10 minutes stoppage time in a game that was done and dusted. Derby just wanted to get off the pitch and go home and we were just seeing out the game a man down. I understand the time being added on to the full extent but in the circumstances last night the additional time was not going to change the outcome. I don't think either side would complain if only 4 minutes added on as it was 4-0 not 1-0. The longer you keep tired players out there the more likely they succumb to injury. We nearly played a full half of extra time. | | | |

But what can the club do about that? I get last couple of seasons it’s been bad but Kemper got injured in tackle against Portsmouth, Cirkin suspended, we need to manage minutes of Kemper. Maybe we could have brought Morrison on or JCS, and Edwards to right back. Mbengue gets injured as foot gets caught in turf. Just not sure we can blame club for that.

I tend to agree with this. Clearly his studs got caught in the turf which lead to the injury. For me that's unlucky rather than a problem with the fitness and conditioning team. On the strapping question, loads of players wear strapping on all sorts of parts of their bodies. I'm sure I read somewhere that there's no scientific evidence that it makes any difference. More of a placebo effect. Look how many players wear wrist tape. They're not all carrying wrist or hand injuries, they just like the way it feels or are following a fashion. Obviously a bad injury. Hope it's something he can come back from as he's the right sort and he's clearly very well liked by his team mates. Get well soon Amadou.

I thought Chair got his studs caught in the Loftus Road turf early in the game with Boro, so I've wondered like somebody else about our pitch. But in trying to verify that I see the fella who wrote the Match Report thought it was a calf strain, but then I thought I heard Stefan say (maybe wrongly) we've had no soft tissue inuries this season! Lamptey first injury when he sat down? Burrell? Saito? As the Club don't seem to say what the injury is anymore, it's very hard to know which is probably their aim.

I think most clubs these days in the Prem and the Championship play on semi synthetic pitches. And many clubs at the moment have injuries expecially Millwall and Derby. I think it’s far more likely to be overplaying players in silly schedules and not considering that it’s not a great thing to have elite sportsman schleppimg long distances on coaches between venues and then made to run round full pelt for ninety minutes, getting on another coach for hours and then repeating that three days later with little chance to do your stretching and warm ups in between. And before people repeat that they used to do that years ago, just go back and look at how they ran around years ago. How much less pressing and running back was there? How fast were they really sprinting and how often? It’s a much more demanding game at the elite level. And yet with all the money in the game no one is thinking that they’re having people with no real understanding of the demands of the game doing the frigging scheduling of matches with no consideration of the welfare of the players. They literally cannot as they wouldn’t be scheduling us on Wednesday and Saturday when we’d already played on Friday. They wouldn’t have us going between Plymouth and Hull in a three match week with four days in between. They wouldn’t have refs who think it’s perfectly fine to kick someone up in the air, good clean tackle, yes but if someone falls over when they deliberately stop short and have a miniscule prod in the back, definitely a free kick. It’s madness.
