I've been alternating between my usual shorts and longer atire this year.
I did walk through Camden Market yesterday in QPR home top and shorts but that was because I was running and walked at the busy bit so I didn't flatten an Italian tourist. [Post edited 2 Dec 2022 7:03]

More problematic, the drop in temp (more people putting the heating on) has come without a breath of a wind. Can't remember feeling the wind for a week or two now. November 28 63.4% of our power was coming from burning coal and gas, and just 13% from renewables - not ideal in the current circs. |  | | |

After a power cut, a heat pump cannot simply be turned on again - it has to be gently warmed up, a process that might take several hours. Well, the theory is that heat pumps emit three units of heat for every unit of electricity they use. But that is the best-case scenario in ideal weather. In practice it is more like 2.5 or 2. In very cold weather - which is when you need it - the Coefficient of Performance (another COP) might drop to near 1.
Even with an ideal COP of 3, that would rely on electricity being no more than three times more expensive than gas, and at the moment it is 3.5 times.

Agreed, obviously they omit less CO2 but that doesn’t take into account the CO2 used to generate electricity (we’ll never do it all vis renewables, well not for years anyway).
There’s going to be a lot of very angry people when their electricity bills start coming in.
There’s also not a direct way of replacing a boiler with a heat pump like for like, for a starters all the radiators will need to be replaced and they’re not good for heating hot water you'll need an immersion heater as well.
Heat pumps work best with underfloor heating. | | | |
