Think of the environment
I have actually just realised that the temporary roof might not encapsualte the chimney stack so an open fire could be the solution to keeping site warm(ish).... or less Ice Station Zebra.

More problematic, the drop in temp (more people putting the heating on) has come without a breath of a wind. Can't remember feeling the wind for a week or two now. November 28 63.4% of our power was coming from burning coal and gas, and just 13% from renewables - not ideal in the current circs. |
You're probably not living in a prime spot for wind power, well, I hope you're not, but I'm not going to deny that lulls can affect windfarms.
That said, pretty much every energy source is intermittent.
Oil, coal and natural gas are intermittent by definition because they are finite and because we have used up most of our reserves (and per the British Geological Survey, fracking won't make a significant difference) and have to import the stuff
Nuclear plants use fuel which comes from overseas, they have to be taken offline for refueling and maintenance (two days offline per month on average) and can be shut down by jellyfish blooms and lack of cooling water or cooling water being too hot
Wind and solar regularly get panned for being intermittent but you can use pumped storage to "store" their energy output for later use, or use batteries (China is using vanadium flow (not lithium ion) batteries, one of which can provide enough energy for 72,000 people), or, in the case of solar, store the energy in molten salt and use it during the hours of darkness to create steam which drives a turbine. This is a deployed technology already.
Tidal is the exception, it can provide reliable power for decades. The Severn Barrage would deliver more power, over a longer operating life, more cheaply, than Hinckley C. The project was canned because of the impact on birdlife, as I recall, but even though I am a birder myself, I think the current energy crisis means we have to reconsider, unless unique species or habitat will be lost.
In related news which is less than an hour old, I see that plans are afoot for a Mersey tidal scheme which would generate enough energy for up to one million homes, for up to a century:

For quite a while now Decembers have been really mild so having weather this cold before Christmas is a bit of a culture shock, but it is December still so its not entirely unexpected.
Minus 3/4 in Leicester this morning on my cycle in to work. Really cold, two layers of gloves and my fingers were still really painful by the time I got to work. Only takes me 16-17 minutes but I felt every single one of those minutes this morning  |  | | |
