| It's getting parky -Baltic-BRASS MONKEYS! on 09:31 - Dec 8 by CamberleyR | A rather chilly -5.5 this morning in deepest Somerset when I got into the car at 6.30 to set off for work. Got a fully electric car in the summer and I can confirm after my longish commute that they don't really like extreme cold weather. [Post edited 8 Dec 2022 9:32]

Does your car have a preconditioning function which allows you to pre-warm the car ready for departure at a set time? Not only does it mean you get into a warm cabin with no defrosting or demisting required, it also maximises the electric range. In general, the electric range will be lower in cold weather, though.

It does, yes. I think I had it on for about 10 minutes before leaving one day a week or so ago but the battery %age reduced from about 4-5% from the night before and the range consequently also dropped so stopped doing it. However if it improves the range overall which I wasn't aware of I'll probably do it. My commute is just short of 50 miles each way and on the morning commutes in this cold weather it's been using 30ish percent (about 34 this morning) of the charge. A few months ago the same journey in the morning was using 24-25%. I shall give it another go tomorrow with the pre-warming just to see how the overall journey compares. EDIT: I've got a VW ID4 and I've just read that the preheating function doesn't yet work on the battery... [Post edited 8 Dec 2022 15:09]

| It's getting parky -Baltic-BRASS MONKEYS! on 09:19 - Dec 8 by PinnerPaul | It is December, we do live in NW Europe, it is our winter. All these things haven't changed, despite all the 'noise' around the 'climate'. Usual nonsense from the media - take a flask and a blanket with you????? Might have been necessary in the 50s but have the BBC/RAC not heard of mobile phones? Temperatures quoted such as -10C - reading on that's in "an isolated place" - yeah like Northern Scotland! And breathe Paul.... |
Mobile phones are great for calling help but if the help can't get to you for a while...

Ah right. There might be a way to pre-heat your car while it is plugged in, if you are able to plug it in when it's at your home. That won't use any of the battery's energy for the pre-heating. My I3 can do unplugged pre-heating, like you described and which reduces the battery's range, or the plugged in type. If you are getting a lot of condensation - I do, well, there's no big, hot piece of iron below the front windscreen - that might be requiring you to use the demisters more than you'd like, and having a (small) effect on battery range. What I found really helped were Pingi dehumidifier bags. They are reusable and can each suck up over 40 grams of moisture.

Is that really likely enough for enough people in this country in December to warrant a nationwide advice alert from the RAC and for the BBC to repeat it. I mean if you live in and drive along a road where you MIGHT, just might get 'snowed' in you're going to know about it in advance. On the M25 not really necessary is it? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

On the basis that my son has worked in the car/truck/emergency vehicles maintenance business all his working life (17 years) and has NEVER heard of a windscreen cracking doing this, I carry on. I bet that’s what the drivers on the M11 thought 25? years ago.But it doesn’t happen often enough to warrant a yellow weather warning from the met office.

I do the same but with warm water. You don't actually need it to be very hot to clear frost from your windscreen. I've never known anyone to crack a windscreen doing this.

I've never heard of anyone cracking a windscreen either but I have been dumb enough to pour cold water onto a windscreen that was still below freezing, so rather than clearing it it just froze straight on top. Blame my younger stupid self for that

I claim the prize for the most stupid stunt ever.Have a guess which idiot poured 4* on a bonfire that was going out?And then dropped the petrol can when the flames shot up the pouring liquid. The conservatory and the grass went up in flames, but luckily I didn’t.I managed to save the conservatory but the grass didn’t grow very well after that.

Shocking....at first sight. How hot was the water, how old the car and an amazing stroke of luck that there is beautifully framed footage of such a mundane yet "unexpected" outcome......................... Also - is that water marks I see on the door BEFORE he tries (again?) Its a set up for me. [Post edited 9 Dec 2022 13:04]
