I am not going to have too much of a gripe about Bonne and why it failed 0 we need to remember that he was signed when we had no strikers of our own, which is a situation we cannot get back to (hence keep Dykes until a replacement is lined up...). BUT this article:

and

OK I get that the recruitment team identified him as a worthwhile target and perhaps the fee and the wages were needed to get him over the line, BUT sheesh seeing all that in Black and White implies that we are talking significant amounts more than he will ever earn again here. We just don't do much of this well, do we?

I don’t think it was an incompetent signing either. He was a 1 in 3 scorer at Charlton and we took a risk. Ipswich went for it too. This is Football League life I’m afraid.

I get that, Baz and think you are probably right, but it is so frustrating that we seem to throw what little money we have on crap or mediocre strikers. I saw much more from Andy Freekin' Carroll last weekend than anyone up front has produced for us in years. Yes, he got injured, but him leaving the game also co-incided with us getting back into it, but he was great.

Maybe we'll strike lucky with the next one...

I agree with you Bazza but it does grate that in recent seasons other midtable Championship clubs have done far better than us in picking out a goal scoring striker. I think we'd be delighted to have Gyokeres, Estupinan or even Carlton Morris. And that's not a dig at Dykes.

We've done well in other positions, so let's hope the next striker we bring in is as effective as, say, Field or Paal.

I've know idea who has the best goals per game ratio and I can't even think what strikers we've owned tbh . Sylla, Polter,Dykes, Bonne..er.. ?
Austin was on a contract here and has probably been our best striker since Helgerson

Looking at our transfers over the last 10 years I think you're right. Austin is easily the best striker we've signed over that period.

As I said above, we've brought in great players in other positions, but we haven't managed to do the same with a striker.

Of course, money is a big factor in this. Austin cost us £4m nearly 10 years ago. We couldn't afford that level of outlay on a striker today.

I think the original incarnation of Charlie Austin that did so much to get us promoted and then scored eighteen goals in Redcrapp’s disintegrating team in the Premier League, was easily the best striker we have had since Les Ferdinand.

It was criminal going into this season with Dykes, Bonne and Armstrong as our ‘strike force’, and spunking £2m plus his wages on Bonne when we are potless is unforgivable. In return we got 3 goals in two and a half years before giving him back to Charlton on a free! Heads should roll.

Austin was a superb striker. Probably the last time we had a forward I thought could pull a goal out of somewhere, even if we were not playing too well.

I also thought Loic Remy was a very talented player, but his injury record ruined his time here.

Since then, we haven't had anyone near those levels,

Why would he lie Baz ?
The point here is we wasted 2 million of the Eze money on him , that for us is the equivalent of an 80 million pound premier league deal
This club cannot afford to be making bad transfers for that sort of cash we have to get it right
You only have to look at the money wasted on Hendricks & Virgil Van Sanderson last year as well, 2 players we didn’t need and offered Zilch , they may as well had you and me in the first team

I'm sure neither Rangers nor Charlton were showing Bonne the full details of the sale agreement. He would just sign his own contract. He probably got the £2m figure from the same places everyone here did.

Every team in the Championship is searching for that elusive 15 goal a season striker. It's easier if you have parachute payments but no guarantees you can get it right. Sheff Utd are still using Sharp and McBurnie, while Rhian Brewster misses out.
Piroe ( Swansea) had a good season last year and Carlton Morris (Luton) is doing it this year but they are the exceptions.
Meanwhile we've tried Kelman and Alfie Lloyd, as well as Bonne.

Kelman has disappointed so far. He will have to show much better form at Orient to convince QPR he's worth a contract extension in the summer.

So when reading the linked article and ruminating over the upfront fee paid, there are two options:

One.
Go with the quote from the player
"The way the club had been going, for it to get £2m in their back pocket..."

Two.
Go with the quote from the journalist.
"...the R’s thrashed out a deal potentially worth £2million."

WE DID NOT PAY £2M FOR MACAULEY BONNE.

This is the fee constantly quoted by Bonne, because it makes him sound great, but by no one else.

I'm sure it was over £1m, but certainly was never and will never be close to £2m. And if you can find a striker who scored 10+ goals in this league for a relegated side for less than £1m I wish you good luck. Still, a signing that didn't work out, and we paid too much. But it wasnt £2m.

This article is all about Bonne getting the fans on his side.

I dont fault the club for buying him. Yes it didnt work out but many a fan will say 'sign a striker' and all managers/clubs/DOFs will tell you that they all want to find that 20-25 goal a season striker for peanuts. Not many do!

Bonne could have really worked out for us looking at his stats, 1 in 2 for Orient, 1 in 3 for Charlton, then he joined us! Then went back to Ipswich and scored for fun at first (even see lots of fans saying get him back, why didnt we give him a chance etc..) then back to us and done nothing! Got me thinking typing that, MAYBE ITS US!!!

There’s always a lot of focus on the transfer fee. I actually don’t think £2m for a striker who’d made double figures in a relegated team without taking penalties was too bad, and it only rose to that with clauses anyway.

What shafted us before, and risks shafting us again, here specifically and in general, is wages. The amount of times I’ve said on Twitter that last summer was expensive and been told “they were all loans and frees”… it’s wage bill that shafts you, and with Bonne we undoubtedly over paid.
