Sly Stone RIP 21:00 - Jun 9 with 4927 viewsNed_Kennedys

What a legend: currently reading his autobiography and he did very well to reach 82.

How very sad. I loved Sly Stone back in the day - a genuine music innovator.

Thank you for being yourself, Sly.

Just heard. Gone to the great Funk jam in the sky.

What a performer and what a great band.

The beginning of slap bass.

Up there with the all time greats. How he got to 82 is incredible given the sheer amount of cocaine he consumed

Rest In Peace Sly Stone. As dmm says an innovator.

Also Rest In Peace Wayne Lewis the first member of Atlantic Starr to leave us.

My favourite group of that era, a string of excellent albums. Saw them at Hammersmith.

RIP Sly, a little ditty for the coming months.

Ah man that’s sad news.

Growing up a huge heavy metal / rock fan it speaks volumes that one of the biggest influences on me becoming a ‘musician’ was Sly and the Family Stone at Woodstock .
The energy and musicianship is off the scale . It made a huge impression on a teenager into Napalm Death!

True legend

Ability and vision of the scale. Just the number of artists Sly (& Robbie) played with and/or produced is a testimony to their recognition in the industry.
And damn … they were funky!!

Incredibly funky!

James Brown and his band may get the credit for inventing funk but Sly and the Family Stone brought it to a whole new level.

I loved Motown and Stax so when I discovered funk I gravitated towards JB whose tunes were normally three or four minutes max, and tight as hell. Sly's tunes were more on the free-form side of things, so only a few of them really did it for me, but as you say the ability and vision were certainly off the scale!

I'm often surprised at the way Fresh is regarded amongst his/their albums, generally IMO not given anywhere near enough credit. I feel exactly the same way about Loaded. VU perhaps in a similar place as a band.
Both top of their lists for me on the right day (often)

RIP Sylvetser, love ya!
