Italy were strong due to the rules they used to have on overseas players. That forced clubs to focus on homegrown talent which fed in all the way to the top. Since the change in rules the top clubs have instead focused on cheaper routes to adding players via overseas markets meaning less Italian talent
I see correlations with football in the uk.
Add into that the actual reduction in the number of people calling themselves English and our cl ar reducing talent pool will be a big factor in the next decade |  |

I don't know - this was the concern in the Premier League and even Championship when the % of English players were going down due to increasing numbers of internationsl etc from other countries coming in, but actually I'm not sure how much it has affected things - England have done as well recently as they have for a long time, easy qualifications, progressing far in competitions.
I guess the real test might be when Kane retires internationally - no-one really waiting in the wings to take over, but maybe someone will come through.

I remember when the Seria A was the dogs danglies in Europe - top stadia, household names, dominant force globally and attracted the creme de la creme of players worldwide.
In contrast we (the English) had hardly any players make the journey across to play for big Italian clubs.... I can only really think of (the dreaded) Hately, Luther Blisset and then I'm scratching my head.
Seems the wheel has turned as it's the same in reverse now.
You've got Tonali at Newcastle but I can't think of too many top Italian's plying their trade in the Premisership.... maybe Chiesia at the Scouse but he's very bit part.
Anyway...... as noted above.... congrats to B&H and especially to Dzecko who was MoM and played with passion belying his 40 years of age.
I really admire these so called smaller nations who pull on their national shirt with 100% pride and are very much in the fast lane now for organisation, skills and ability. | |

Italian top league football seemed to suffer badly from the Bosman ruling in the mid 1990s, where the % of imported players rose greatly compared to young italian talent, also some of the financial scandals a few years later didn't help either. |  | | |

Again I see parallels.
The English game is currently obsessed with set plays - corners, free kicks and long throws.
It's becoming rigid and disciplined and the "possession" is all about a grind rather than beating players and cutting through the opposition.
Look at the players being marginalised (and I accept some of these are not without their own flaws currently) :- Bellingham, Grealish, Foden, to an extent Eze and Palmer plus I'd include Wharton who is a brilliant passer of the football.
It appears to me the German isn't going to take any of them but instead opt for players like Anderson (I rate him), Garner or Mainoo to be in there with Rice. | |

It's an odd one but I think it comes down to the quality of the leagues, clearly La Liga has superseded Serie A in terms of the talent it's able to attract, and the foreign players who came over seemed to help raise the level of the other players.
It's managerial talent too - Mancini seemed to get the most out of his squad to win the Euros arguably with a bit of luck along the way needing penalties to win the semi final and final. But no one else has got close since, and I don't think Rino Gattuso is exactly a great manager. | |
