Bowen's tackle before the goal - good tackle or should have been called?
Top game last night though ref had an absolute mare. We got a clear rub of the green on the pen (to put it mildly) but seemed like the ref then spent the second half trying to make up for that and however much Wham may moan, we deserved that point.
It's been mentioned on the match thread, but not as much as I would have thought... that Bowen tackle before he scored. My gut when it first happened was "that's a card, it could be red". Not even blown. And while we got 100 replays of our non-penalty from 10 different angles, that tackle barely touched on. No other angle I've seen of it.
I was screaming blue murder at the time but having watched it back this morning it was a “proper” football tackle, took the ball in a hard but fair way.
Is there any footage available yet? I ask because from where I was looking (and I had my glasses for once), at the time I thought, ours was a blatant pen (wrong) and theirs was a soft pen (wrong).

Could’ve gone either way but the deciding factor is Vale got up and wasn’t hurt.
The absolute sin in it all belongs to Vale. He is such a limp leaf and showed minimal effort to get back and work the line - the absolute opposite of Paul Smyth.
I have no idea what people see in Vale at all. He has no place in the war that is a Championship midfield battle as he has zero bottle and even less physical presence. For sure he’ll pop up with some pearler cross field passes and dazzle in a couple from 25 yards; but meat n drink Championship play? Nah, he’s not for me.
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

Yeah he’s been a huge disappointment this season. I don’t think he’s been that bad (apart from yesterday) but just not kicked on since last season. “Powder puff” in the tackle is a huge frustration for me.

It’s given as a foul 99/100 times. Bowen had lost his head a bit and dived in in that way referees are generally hot on. If Vale doesn’t turn to make it a tackle from behind then fair enough but he’s not giving that the other way in a million years.

According to Fotmob, Harvey Vale is our best performer so far this season. Personally I’d go with Charles or Edwards.
I googled Fotmob and apparently they compile statistics and one of their uses is giving players ratings 0-10.

For me it was hard but fair but I'm old school. Given the modern game, I'm surprised the referee didn't blow. To be honest, I was more frustrated at the needless flick by Poku that coughed up possession moments earlier. He actually had space in front of him to attack but decided on a difficult flick backwards.

Rarely I disagree with you Clive but I've watched it back a few times now and it gets worse every time.
Bowen gets the ball but comes through the back of the player and is a bit out of control.
The sort of challenge that would have been acceptable by a Mark Dennis or a Stuart Pearce 40 years ago but in the modern era? I don't think so.
Well with that referee last night it could have been a foul and a yellow card one minute or play on the next, we were just unlucky it fell in the latter time slot.

He was okay last season. I think his main problem is that he doesn't have a position as such. Every other player I can say what their role is in their team. I just don't know what he is meant to be doing. Is he a winger? A midfielder? A number ten? Didn't he play left back when he was at Bristol Rovers? At the moment he is ineffectual at best. If I were him, I'd be trying to nail down a position rather than being 'versatile'.

I think he should be a good old-fashioned utility man given half our squad at any one time is unavailable, as much as I’m sure he sees himself in a particular position and wants to play there. They don’t really exist any more but it suits a guy who is ok at everything and not great at anything. Still think there’s something in there and he’s perhaps not helped by the move away from 4-4-2 and being an option on the right of that.

Yes I am looking forward to your summary of that ref
One of the worst I have seen in an age

I caught a bit of the South Coast derby yesterday, and the officiating in that was dreadful.
I know it's a regular part of Clive's hymn sheet, but with the all the money washing around the game, the lack of investment in refereeing is appalling.

is there a video of the tackle please??
It's shown on the match highlights.
Strangely, the extended highlights only show an angle that looks as if it might not have been a foul, but the shorter version shows an angle that looks as if it could have been a sending off.

The question I ask is was it much different to Cirkin’s challenge where he played the ball first but caught the Preston player with the follow through Cirkin’s red should have been a yellow imo.
I agree it was a full bloodied challenge from Bowen but it could have been given as a free kick on an other occasion.
As for Vale, he is too weak in his challenges and very often doesn’t provide much for the team. He would probably not be in the team if Chair or Burrell were fit to play.

Our penalty was the same. got ball, but then wiped out Smyth with the follow through. I didn't think it was a pen, but if you are saying the follow through counts even if you get the ball then on the Cirkin scale it was a penalty

Vale has created the second most chances in the Championship before the international break. He does a lot of work off the ball blocking the passing lines etc that can't be seen on TV. Also, he is not a winger, much better playing off Kone in the 10 or the 8, which he was doing at the beginning of the season.

Exactly as I saw it, plus when the WHU player won the ball he was outside the penalty area, but was inside it when he took Smyth's legs out as he fell. That took away Smyth's possibility of retrieving the ball in a dangerous position and why I think he gave the penalty. All this he took the ball bollox outside the area is irrelevant.

Kemper got booked for having a shot from that Smyth knockdown that was about a millimetre out of play. Like he’s trying to delay their goalkeeper taking a goal kick he has to go and grab the ball for half an hour into the game.
