The Worst QPR Game You Went To 14:27 - Apr 14 with 6194 viewsAntti_Heinola

We always do thebest as that cheers us up, but how about the worst? Choose your own guidelines - could be just an awful game, or you had a bad experience, or relegation.

I think mine has to be the home defeat by Southampton after Ray Jones died. It was awful, so sad, and on top of that a portion of the crowd were furious that the players didn't honour him by playing better and showed zero sympathy for a team grieving a teammate. Absolutely awful.

God, this is a terrible idea, sorry everyone.

Other than that, Vauxhall Motors was probably the most inept performance I've ever seen. But it triggered the most exhilarating run in recent memory for pure drama.

Bare bones.

yeah that Cantona one was a sickener. That's right up there. We played so, so well that day.
Robbie fkn Hart.
Is it true he never reffed another game after that?

He probably didn’t need to after the backhander he got from fergie and moan Utd.

For me there's nothing worse than a long midweek drive/return journey to see a shocking performance. Two that stand out for me:

1) 1992 League Cup away to Sheff Wed. 0-4. High hopes of our second (!) league cup final. We were abysmal from start to finish and made Carlton Palmer look like Pirlo.

2) 2001 away to Crewe. Still holding out some hope of avoiding relegation. 2-0 up with 4 minutes to go, Crouch and Ready sent off. Ends 2-2. Felt sick all the way home, which I didn't get to until 2am.

Wimbledon 3 QPR 0 December 1990.
Battered and outplayed whilst fielding the likes of Gus Caesar, Robbie Herrera and Brian Law in defence.

That was my first ever away game, so I still have fond memories of it despite the result

1-4 away at Oxford in 1998, I think it was the last straw for Ray Harford. History records that Andy Thomson scored the third goal, but all I can remember of it was Dean Windass trampling all over us. That side had Maddix, Yates, Peacock, Murray and Gallen, but it was still gutless and hopeless, not even a thunderbolt from Tony Sculinho could lift the spirits.

Oh, and Coventry away in 1996. Didn't play at all.
[Post edited 14 Apr 2020 17:15]

Yep. That Oxford game.

Harford's car got wrecked. It was the point where I knew we weren't getting back to the Prem any time soon and we were rapidly going the other way...

Can we go out yet?

Plenty to agree with on here.

A 0-1 defeat at home to a bottom of League One Northampton was a particular lowlight, us with a loan kid from Fulham up front, possibly the worst centre forward I’ve ever seen.

Time where it seemed there were no depths we couldn’t reach.

He was.And he was pulling out the last few bits of his hair as our goals went in.He was also the Middlesbrough boss when we beat them 4-2 on our way to almost winning the league in 1976.

I see a few mentions for Coventry away in 96. I drove up there and then realised I'd left my ticket at home; I've never quite worked out whether that was good or bad.

Anyone else at Highbury for the Villa League Cup semi-final replay, ‘78ish?
If I recall Brian Little tor’s us a new one (hat trick I believe), I went with such expectation and left much like that game in ‘86 we’ve all forgotten!

Yes, I was there. Little tore us a new one. We should have won it at Villa Park. Gerry was incredible that night. We won the toss and took them back to Highbury.

Horrible day. The game was switched to all ticket, early on Saturday morning. There was more than a few Rangers without tickets, I was one of them.

Couple for me

1) Milk Cup final - we were flying back from out first ever family holiday abroad and our flight was massively delayed so we only managed to make it to Wembley at half-time. Why did we bother. How to make a shitty day even shittier.

2) Can't remember the year exactly but it was away at Selhurst Park on Boxing Day in maybe the late 80s. Me and my brother trekked all the way there for a midday kick-off, it was f--king freezing, it was something like £15 to get in which was serious money in those days, and it was the most uneventful match I've ever seen. Nothing happened. It was 0-0. Everyone was standing around shivering looking at each other wondering why the f--k we weren't at home in front of a fire eating adn drinking.

So many of those already mentioned but one that hasn't been mentioned and stuck out for me was the 1-3 midweek defeat to the Fakes in the pouring, pissing rain. We were so gutless that night, epitomised by possibly the worst performance in the hoops for Johnny Byrne which prompted a shout from just behind the goal during a QPR corner at the Loft end of "If you come anywhere near the 6 yard box Byrne I'm coming over the fence and dropping you" Byrne obviously heard as you could see him scanning the area to see if he could see who said it . I can't be certain but I don't think he did get close to the goal after that.

The grass is always greener.

God where to start with this as I seem to have a connection with so many!

0 0 v Tranmere at home. Me and a few 14 year old school buddies attended and sent the oldest looking and most gormless one into a newsagent on the Uxbridge Road for some beers and a porno. He walks out proudly having obtained a 4 pack of Special Brew and a copy of 50+. We drank what we could, stashed the mag and two beers in the corner outside where you walk between the flats by South Africa and Loftus. Game was pants and we ended up lobbing a load of free (in the ground promotion) Rice Crispies Squares around Ellerslie Road. Game was boring, Tranmere’s kit was making me queasy and I swear Simon Barker finally ended the life of the old School End scoreboard.

0-5 Wimbledon away! Would have been under drinking age again but somehow obtained a few beers. A bit of a hardened drinker now after being a regular at Weybridge Ex-Services Club and Molesey Snooker Centre. A little tiddly and a lot pissed off, this was the one and only time I’ve ever been spoken to by a steward.

1 nil win at home v Stockport Jan ‘03. Yes a win is included for having to endure watching Brett Angell plus this was the coldest I’d ever been at a game. My then girlfriend and future ex-wife landed at Heathrow from Belfast at 1 & I romantically whipped her down the Great West Road to Mecca for this spectacular feast of football where only the hastily acquired £2 Shepherds Bush Market gloves kept her hands from resembling Edumund Hilary’s thus making my chances of a ‘love shake’ (she was a bit of a prude) quite slim.

Cardiff play off final. I was a lone QPR fan aboard Iver the Engine heading back down to the Rhondda on the Valleys Train line. I swear they could smell I was different and only the fact I somehow bumped into a Cardiff supporting chef I knew from my time in the Royal Navy saved me from an almighty kicking or ribbing (or both knowing those violent Welsh jesters!)

P.s. Robbie Hart? Wasn’t that Adam Sandler’s character in The Wedding Singer? That was a bad day when Cantona scored :(

P.P.S. I was also at that 4 nil game on the Friday night when Earnshaw backflpped and grinned all over W12. The fireman were on strike at the time and on my way back throgh Acton with my brother and fellow matlow from that famous port town of Hayes, I thought it would be a good idea to tell the firman to get back to work! My brother gave me a look that would have rivalled Non, the non-speaking villain who was part of Ternece Stamp's baddies in Superman 2.

Aside from the obvious two final defeats:

QPR 0-6 Arsenal FA Cup 4th Round 2001

Bergkamp scored a screamer for fun and two of Arsenal's other goals came from Rose and Plummer. It was this game that really finally rammed it home to me just how far adrift we were from top division football. I left the ground wondering if I would ever see Rangers play a top flight game again.

Three months later we were in administration and the third tier.

Far too many to put on here (a lot already have by others).

One that sticks out was away at Charlton when they were at Selhurst Park.

I lived in Watford at the time and went on my motorbike right through central London and it was the day of the Poll Tax demonstration, which turned into the infamous riot, so traffic was awful.
Got to the ground at half time where my brother was stIll outside waiting for me.
Cheeky fukers still charged us full price to get in.
We lost 1-0 to a last minute own goal.

I wasn’t aware central London was turning into a riot but decided to go via west London to avoid traffic congestion.
Big mistake, it was Boat Race day and west London was just as clogged up and took me hours to get home.

Thoroughly miserable day.

One to add to the list which surprisingly for me hasn't been mentioned yet is the Wimbledon FA Cup game in 97. Fifth Round of the FA Cup, away from home yet with half the crowd being Rangers. This was gonna be our year. Just such a crushing defeat.

Fulham away in 99 playing against them for the first time in nearly twenty years, again fantastic support, again a crushing defeat.

Swindon away in 98 lost 3-1 in the pissing down rain. Everything a football experience shouldn't be.

Worthy mention to Ray Harford and 88% of the games he managed...

Edit: One to add is the draw against Hull in the promotion season. Was back in the UK for my 40th birthday and everything was set up for potentially the most memorable match, day and experience but the draw took all that away. Absolutely gutted.

I feel we could have a whole section dedicated to “Worst QPR game you went to at Selhurst Park”. The miserable process of getting there and back from such a dismal comfort vacuum put you 90% of the way to a terrible time even before any football broke out. I’d chuck in a 3-0 Sunday surrender, when I spent all too little time watching Steve Slade prancing about helplessly like Bambi in the far distance, and far too much staring into the joyous gurning gums of David “Hillbilly” Hopkin.
