Well done to Beth Mead on winning the sports personality of the year award tonight. The women’s team won team of the year and the manager won coach of the year too.
It was one of the best days of mine and my daughter’s lives to see them lift the trophy in July, and one we’ll never forget.

Wow if there was an award for the most patronising post on LFW this year we have a winner. Thanks for your sympathy.

Sorry if I offended you. I take it from your post that you didn't necessarily take great pleasure in the England Women's team's achievements. I'm genuinely curious as to why people wouldn't enjoy it. It was an incredible achievement and it really brought the country together and the winning goal was scored by an Rs fan! I don't understand what's not to like.

Streatham Ranger has provided evidence based examples of the positive impact that the women's football team has had on pupils at the school he teaches, himself and his daughter.
It's great to read that football, regardless of the gender of the players, can inspire the younger generations in such a meaningful way.

I fail to see anything patronising in SR's account, it's all positive and I hope the kids continue to play football as well as hopefully being introduced to as many other sports that the school schedule permits.

Read those two articxles and honestly cannot tell what on earth your point is.

"Seems to me the only people who 'politicise' it are the ones who for some reason resent other people enjoying it or celebrating it or talking about it seriously. It's really weird."

You're being intellectually dishonest here, come on. I replied with an article from a "liberal and progressive" (Self-described) mag pontificating about how "Megan Rapinoe and her teammates have politicised football in the best way possible" - We've all witnessed the politicisation of it - Denying it just because you happen to agree with it, makes you look silly.

FWIW I missed 2 of the womens Euros games watching QPR/U21s in pre season friendlies. Perhaps the club should be more woke in their fixture scheduling so that refuseniks like myself have no excuse. I also sacked off watching the 3rd-place play-off in 2018 to go see us play out a dreadful friendly at AFC Wimbledon. Like a QPR fan would. Very, very weird.

Edgbaston and Headingley are great grounds atmosphere wise, but why is there no demand for bigger grounds for cricket? There's nothing better than seeing the Aussies getting pelters in those grounds in a way their much larger home crowds are incapable of doing. Not saying there's no working class fans, but it is much more of a working class person's sport here in Australia. Everyone plays it at school and the players don't sound like they went to Eton (I realise this has changed a bit with England in recent times).

Re travelling support the barmy army has always been impressive, especially here in Australia, although their ranks are swelled here by the large amount of UK expats living here.

But you look at the crowds for the Big Bash and the T20 World Cup in Australia and the crowds aren't huge, especially when outside the school holidays. Size of the country is a major factor. Basically, Australian cities have one massive ground each, which they share with other sports, apart from Melbourne, which also has the big inside stadium down by the dockside. AFL is obviously played on Ovals so they can make those grounds multi-purpose. The pitch at Wembley is too small to play cricket on for instance.
Big factor in participation is the weather. My son is very good at cricket but tricky and expensive to get him regular training/coaching in winter.

We lived in Australia for a while, cricket there was really inclusive and affordable - we were in a pretty feral working class town, and the local club was great, both my older lads played for the men's team at times, and the teams we played were similar. The really feral place we went, all their support was pissed by 11am!
And the lads would head down to Adelaide oval to watch international matches, cheaply.

How anyone can take exception to Beth Mead winning the trophy is beyond me, she and the team have really succeeded within their sport - which is the most you can do. Unlike the superlatively well paid but mediocre men's equivalent.

Right.
But your point was 'who cared about women's football pre-politicisation'. The inference there, and sorry if this is wrong, was that you believe people care about it because they're being told to. If that's wrong, I'd be interested to know exactly what you meant. The articles you showed were one questioning why women's football might not be more popular in some countries, and about how football is helping women achieve a semblance of equality in particular countries. The second is about American female footballers being famous enough to have a voice and talk about the abuse of female athletes, inequality for women in sport and how investment in women's sport is crucial for all kinds of reasons.

So, tell me, what exactly did you mean when you said no one cared about women's football, 'pre-politicisation'? What does that mean? And if it's based on thiose two articles, I'd be fascinated to know exactly what you disagree about in them?

Bare bones.

The easiest way too demonstrate how you misunderstand my viewpoint is weight classes in combat sports.

I enjoy watching Tyson Fury fight and I enjoy watching Josh Warrington. I don't care that a really bad heavyweight boxer would beat your most elite featherweight boxer. What I care about is the elite competition between evenly matched people

So a large reason is it comes down to technical level and women's football just isn't there. Especially the goal keepers

Where technical skill is involved I enjoy watching women's Tennis or MMA for example on an equal level to male sport.

Valentina Shevchenko is as technically gifted as any male MMA fighter in the world. The Zhang Weill vs jedrzejczyk 1st fight was an all time classic. Elite sport. Evenly matched I'm all for it. Just don't see that in women's football personally

Womens sport IS elite competition between evenly matched people!

You're comparing top level men's football with top level women's football - men's game is faster, quicker etc, but that's because erm...they are not evenly matched!

Womens tennis is the same level as mens tennis? - No it isn't - like your example of the boys U15 team beating an international women's team - any of the boys champions at Wimbledon are winning the women's event with ease!

I honestly don't think the mediocre ones will give a shit.
Women's football is on the up and fairplay, I'm not remotely interested in it but then again my interest in men's football is fading.
There's a place for Women's football, of course there is. Same as in athletics , tennis etc. Blokes respect the Women in those sports I just think it's got some way yet for Women's football to be taken more seriously. Its getting there though.

I disagree that women’s football is elite competition.

I’ve already explained my issue is with the quality of women’s football not being high enough… yet!! For me to think this award was justified vs other achievements within British sport

It’s women’s football. Not women’s sport that I am picking on

Like I said in my previous post. The difference between Fury and Warrington in size means Fury always wins. But as the example (I already gave) with weight classes it’s the technical level that I think is relevant in the context of an award like this and whether it’s enjoyable. Womens football doesn’t reach that minimum standard for me

Valentina Shevchenko is more technically gifted than Francis Ngannou. Ons Jabeur and Holger Rune don’t have much in the way of a gap in technical ability. More to do with physical differences in speed and strength but like my example a heavy weight boxer or a feather weight there is more than enough quality (right now) in women’s tennis for those games to interest me now.

I don’t see that with women’s football. The level just isn’t high enough from what I’ve seen. Especially the goal keepers

Not really. I've seen England win world cups in Rugby & cricket, a tonne of Olympic golds, multiple boxing world titles across almost every weight category, multiple world motorsports titles, and so on. Even the U20 men won a world cup. It's not exactly unheard of for England or English people (Or Brits if we're competing as GB) to win things across most sports at the highest (World) level.

Add this to the fact England women are professionals and still mostly playing against amateurs - They won a European championship, not a world cup - On home soil, again - I just don't see it as a particularly noteworthy triumph. Certainly not an "Oh they'll dominate SPOTY cos of this" moment, not for me anyway.

Beth Mead. Woke choice. Worst winner since Ryan Giggs.

How is Beth Mead a woke choice.

She amassed the most votes, as determined by the general public, hence her being the deserved winner.

It would appear that the woke term is just being used again to denigrate her for no justifiable reason whatsoever. Very sad.

"...woke morons like yourself"

Not a very festive message, but a message all the same!

I used to play 5 a side football, with as many as three women involved. One of them played for Reading Ladies and made me look like a one bow-legged gibbon. We enjoyed those games, not because we were woke but because we just liked playing football.

Just because someone appreciates women's sport, that doesn't mean they're woke.

The woke mind virus is either defeated or nothing else matters. This is hardly a fringe point of view anymore.

What I think, or what you think I think it means, is utterly irrelevant at this point. You're either paying attention or you're not. You're either an honest person or you're not. It's that simple.
