Well done to Beth Mead on winning the sports personality of the year award tonight. The women’s team won team of the year and the manager won coach of the year too.
It was one of the best days of mine and my daughter’s lives to see them lift the trophy in July, and one we’ll never forget.

This is not a political or sexist statement.

Almost everyone in Scotland would vote for Eve Muirhead.
The vast majority of women and young girls, outside of Scotland, would vote for Mead.

Apart from anything else Stokes was up against it, did well to get second. Didn't seem too pleased about it though!

Agree SPOTY is a bit of light entertainment but sports stars still like to win it due to the long list of famous names on the trophy going back 60 years. It's got nothing to do with personality, it's all about 'the nations favourite'.

This post suggests to me an argument then that as much sport as possible should be on free to air view and actually is still how the vast majority of people access live sport still.

Perhaps if cricket was free to air instead of being tucked away behind a Sky Sports Paywall the achievement would have been in the public consciousness much more and voted accordingly. Same goes for golf.

Agreed, not a show I'm too bothered about, and yes it's watched mostly by armchair fans - and those same people vote for it, so I'm not quite sure where some of the theories about the Beeb or "pc gone mad" come from (not you westberks, further up the thread).

The Lionesses struck a chord, hence BM's win. Stokes won it just 3 years ago, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was an element of 'someone else's turn' in some voting. Flintoff & Botham both won it too, so there's 3 cricketers who all caught the wider public's imagination and won it - Stokes from behind the Sky paywall.

I've coached girls football since 2005, and can tell you the impact last summer had on girls' interest in the game and girls' confidence when playing has been massive. 50% of the children in the country no longer feel like an after thought when playing the nation's most popular sport. That's quite some achievement.

Fair enough, I'll stand corrected on that one.

I do think cricket has shot itself in the foot though on how little of it is available free to air now (apart from The Hundred for sure).

Probably a discussion for another day though!

Rugby League the same sadly. Thrown its entire lot in with Sky which, increasingly, doesn't care about it and maroons it on things like Sky Sports Mix on a Thursday night.

Do we really need a SPOTY ??

Back patting nonsense If you ask me, I wouldn't know the current winner If he or she fell on top of me from a great height.

The biggest thing for sportsmen or Women Is to be a winner/winners In their respective sports, they don't need telling how fabulous and fantastic they are six Months later. I just don't buy into award ceromonies.

The thing is Ted the millions of people actually watching the show disagree with you, so why do you want to stop something that other people enjoy, just cos you don't.

It's like me saying why do they have Game of Thrones, I can't stand these mystical sex-and-violence shows, don't see the point of it. I'd never watch the show but can understand that other people enjoy it.

Multiple times more people watch SPOTY than Premier League games on Sky, so there is an audience. Just cos the Daily Express or the Mirror write lazy articles saying people turned off the show based on a comment on Twitter from Dave from Doncaster saying he can't stand that Gaby Logan bird doesn't mean that they're representative of all viewers.

It's like the people on here that regularly come on to say they're giving up on QPR. Why bother to post then on a QPR forum. Just go, already. If people don't like the BBC just don't watch it, simples. Don't get why they have to get everyone else on board.

I can't begrudge the Lionesses winning g the team of the year. And Beth Mead was the star of that team.

What you have to remember is that it is the BBC SPOTY. They went to town on Women's Euros, where other sports got little or no coverage.

It's not just the TV that is funded though, it's all the radio stations and maybe the online stuff these days. I would think it very difficult for a household to say they never use any of those.

Clearly the point is that everyone who pays for the BBC is entitled to criticise it, telling people "Don't watch it then" doesn't solve the problem of them still being legally compelled to pay £159 a year for it.

How's snooker same as playing cards. ?

To hopefully lighten the mood a touch (viewers with narcolepsy are advised to skip this post), here's a story from my youth that talk of snooker brings to mind.

When we were in our 20s, me and three mates I had known since secondary school used to go on lads' holidays together. One summer, we were in Brittany, and on one of the days, we were split on what to do, so two of the group stayed at the hotel, for a beach day, while me and the other bloke went off to visit some chateaux.

When we got back from our tour of the local castles, we discovered the other two were having a drink with two French women we had never seen before. We all chatted to the women for a while, then the women went on their way.

Later, the two who had stayed at the hotel for the day told us how they had used their pidgin French to start chatting to the women, they had all got on well, and that they had even managed to persuade the ladies to have a few games of pool at the hotel. The French ladies had not been familiar with the game, though, and needed to have the rules explained to them, as well as to be shown how to use the cues for best effect.

One of my mates involved in the pool had more confidence in his ability to speak French than his level of competence actually warranted and had tried to tell the girls how to wield the potting implements by translating "Push the cue" into French. He knew "poussez" was "push" but he had no idea what cue was in French, so winged it by assuming the word was the same, at the same time seeking to add some authenticity to this noun that was surely the same in both languages by giving it the wonderfully French pronunciation "que," as "in parce que" - "because" in English. All perfectly reasonably except....

I had a degree in French and fell about laughing when he had finished his story. There is another French word pronounced like that, "queue". It has one meaning in French which is exactly the same as the English word, but I also knew the slang meaning. My mates had been stood at a pool table, trying to help two women they had just met handle two long pieces of cylindrical wood while urging them to "Push the d1ck, push the d1ck!"

Does that rambling yarn now put me top of the "ignored poster" list?

"Things had started becoming increasingly desperate at Loftus Road but QPR have been handed a massive lifeline and the place has absolutely erupted. it's carnage. It's bedlam. It's 1-1."

Seems to me it mainly comes from within womens football - Evidence below

https://www.globalpolicyjourna

https://www.newstatesman.com/p

Really seems like everyone enjoyed it a lot when they can't even name the competition the team won, I keep noticing this, people mixing up euros and world cups. This rarely happens with the men's game, because people actually care about it. I don't pretend to care - I was at Wealdstone during pre season with everyone else, oblivious to what was going on at Wembley.

But if that's your genuine heartfelt opinion, Antti, then so be it. All a bit weird if you ask me.

My issue with the womens team winning it is that the standard of football is so low it feels a level of disrespect to the male and female sportsmen playing elite sport.

In 2017 the USA womens team were the World champions they played a match against Dallas fc Under 15’s boys team and lost 5-2

Last year Brazil women’s national team played against Gremio’s Under 16’s and lost 6-0 in a short match

Just doesn’t feel right when we are talking about such a low standard
