First Head Over The Parapet Leeds Match Thread on 19:21 - Mar 15 by queensparker | Dunno how anyone can walk away from that game feeling grumpy. Maybe it didn’t come across on the stream but the whole team worked their bollocks off today and for once we competed in midfield, thought Colback and Edwards were excellent against a strong team and Andersen played his part too. Frey was his usual industrial self but didn’t stop for 90 minutes. A lot of snidey fouls by us too including Saito’s red which to me is a good thing, we looked really up for it today A good open game and we could have won it - we had a couple of breakaways where a a better ball would have left them wide open. We could also have lost - after their second goal we sat back and got battered for 30 mins. Lovely sunny day, pubs packed, enjoyable game to watch, gave the champions elect a proper game and Jimmy Dunne did a 360 pirouette in injury time and almost set up a winner. I’d have taken that all day long [Post edited 15 Mar 19:30]

It came across the same way on the stream with the commentary for me. Much improved performance and fight all round. Much more entertaining and engaging too. Something you can get behind however you consume the game.

First Head Over The Parapet Leeds Match Thread on 19:38 - Mar 15 by numptydumpty | I totally disagree about Frey today. He is definitely a unit and although, occasionally clumsy, bit like with Jimmy, his touch can be deceptive and he, at least maintains possession and a good outlet for the long punt forward, where we had only Lyndon, who was poor re this, for years. Old school centre forward, and perfectly adequate for our team at this level. His injury record this season is decent too. Missing Kolli and Celar and Lloyd's not it seems quite up to the level at times. Would love to keep the big man next season. Kolli and Kelman and one other, whether that's Celar or someone else. Decent game too. First fifteen was very impressed with Leeds. Played like the top of the table they are. But a couple of great finishes and we get a solid result. We are just playing for our league finishing position now, but let's go for our highest finish since Warburton era. Think it's just the three points required for complete safety now also. |
It’s clear Leeds came out to blow us away today. I’m surprised they eased up in the last 10-15 minutes.

First Head Over The Parapet Leeds Match Thread on 15:02 - Mar 15 by stainrods_elbow | Why is is that footballers get credit just for doing a fair impression of their best? In my job as teacher/editor, it's a given, like in most normal jobs. I don't pat myself on the back at the end of the day, nor expect anyone else to, just for trying or showing passion, beucase for me it's a matter of pride, and because I love what I do. I agree with the poster who says the performance was no more than just about passable |(though with clear deficits up front/going forwards). Compared to the 4-0 vs Leeds last season, though, we've clearly gone backwards, and only a loon would argue otherwise. [Post edited 15 Mar 15:04]

So, you're just comparing one match with last season to state that "we've gone backwards". How much forward have we gone if you consider Watford away last season to this season? Perhaps "only a loon" would be happy to decide on the basis of one match!"

Last season we had Dozzell as a regular starter Dykes and Armstrong as non scoring number nines as our only other options to an injury hit Frey. Chair was our only consistent attacking midfielder but was out for periods too. Begovic was the number one.... We were still in relegation danger with two games left If you are depressed by our lack of progress from last season, then perhaps follow the red devil's from just outside Manchester. They are on television more than ourselves also !!! Have no understanding of your immense negativity about QPR !!!

You obviously missed the save the Leeds keeper made from frey in the second half then? | | | | Login to get fewer ads
First Head Over The Parapet Leeds Match Thread on 22:26 - Mar 15 with 1507 views | Dorse | The more I reflect on the match, the better I think it was. Firstly, I think that Marti put one over Farke with the midfield selection: Colback and Edwards were busier and snappier than our recent central pairings and both broke up attacks higher up the field. Secondly, that selection ensured we were a lot more dangerous in their box, and secure in ours, with 4 x CBs on the park plus Frey up front. Finally, having the stones to drop Yang and play Smyth gave us a lot more aggression in the press. Both our goals came from pressure leading to a turnover. Without these changes, I honestly think we'd have ended up battered by half time.

First Head Over The Parapet Leeds Match Thread on 18:13 - Mar 15 by ManinBlack | With Derby winning three on the spin it means we are just 7 points above the drop zone now so we have to be careful we don't squander some winnable fixtures coming up. Time to stop losing away starting at Stoke. |
7 points but still quite a few teams below us. They’d all need to go on a good run of form and that’s unlikely. One or two, yes, but not all of them but yes, our next three or four games are very important. I just hope Saito only gets a one match ban.
First Head Over The Parapet Leeds Match Thread on 23:00 - Mar 15 with 1425 views | Hooping_Mad | If I'm honest I'm a bit gutted we dropped 2 points however we stopped the rot so content with that. Few positives for me were Andersen looking to play forward, Smyth far better than Yang, midfield was better than Tuesday. More minutes for Morrison. On the other hand I though Frey looked a bit laboured and could do with a goal. first goal felt very soft again. Saito now out for 3 games will be a problem. Mixed bag but possibly a corner turned. Edit: Pragmatic tactics from Marti were welcome. [Post edited 15 Mar 23:01]

No vision, slow, his fouls broke momentum. Yes, he is a great target, but too hesitant. Killed at least 2 break aways . Now that I have had one idea ( using Edwards as a DM) adopted, please consider Jimmy D as a CF at least late in games. .. better control, more speed, better feet than Michy. But yes I won’t fault him for effort. And glad to see Morrison back

As it stands, it was a sending off for serious foul play so unfortunately it's three.

Absolutely spot on. I don't think this part of the game is valued enough with people dismissing the foundation Varane and Field offer us and the additional cover they provide in defending our box. We got overrun against Middlesbrough in the first half precisely for this reason and I said to my son at half time that we needed to bring Edwards into DM. We looked so much more solid as a result. Colback hasn't got the legs to cover big areas of the pitch and isn't great in our box but Edwards can do both and we looked so much better. Marti could've made his subs a bit earlier but overall tactically outthought Farke yesterday I thought. We've had the worst number of injuries I can remember and we're still competitive against the best team in the league. Chapeau.

How I long for those glory days….and another Bego punt. I’m still not sure how we didn’t go down, it was so bloody awful at times, and thank god we stayed up. This season has been an improvement with some much better performances, albeit some shocking days out like Swansea just to keep us honest. Consistently inconsistent at times. However, if recruitment, retention and rehab are able to do their jobs and we maintain some continuity, it’s a much better team and squad than we have had for a while with a lot of younger talent to develop. This is why I despair when I see loan players in the team ahead of our own and when we have no chance of signing them either. Now, if there’s a possibility we can poach Edwards by using money from elsewhere, that would be shrewd business as he’s a cut above what we have but Yang and Ashby ? Both have done more harm than good over the games they’ve played. Given that Ashby hasn’t played for a while, it’s not because he needed to play a minimum number of games and I’m not convinced that #yangshirts will keep the FFP wolf from the door, although I did enjoy that J-Pop/K-Pop video more than I should admit on a forum - niche comes to mind. Hoping we have some decent recovery over the next week or so and we get Kolli and co back, at least on the bench. Rayan would have been a good sub for Frey yesterday and if we get the chance, I wouldn’t mind him starting with Frey when fit. As for Kelman, I hope we’ll see him return to replace Celar if the transfer rumours of him leaving were correct in January. We’d be paying a couple of million to sign him if he wasn’t ours so why would we not keep him given he knows where the net is now.

Think they’ll go up despite Farke. Absolute madness with the options they have to play the same team as Wednesday and make one late sub after bringing Gnonto at half time. I’m pretty sure if they’d mixed it up more/earlier they’d have scored again. Poor manager IMO. Fair play to Dunne spending the whole game on a yellow (a thick yellow) and Solomon doing very little for 85 mins.

Ashby is clearly here cheap because of our Newcastle connection. Yang has quality (his assist against Derby) but I agree he shouldn't be starting if he's not producing. Edwards, however, is a superb player who is better than what we have. I don't have a problem with a loan player being in the team if they're as good as him or Kyle Walker or Wayne Routledge. With the team we were able to field I thought that was a good effort and result in a week where there have been questions about whether we're on the beach or not. That's about £140m (highest ever in Championship history) of payroll playing £15m yesterday. Enjoyed the game as well. Good watch.
