The first goal this evening totally on him and yet again his overall game had me on the edge of my seat as he’s like a chain smoker in a fireworks factory.

100%. It was a stupid stupid challenge. But we were winning with 4 minutes left. I don’t care what you do but you can see that out. Firstly we had Bennie, Kolli and Kone on the field. You have to take 1 of them off and bring on a defender. That is so stupid not to do that. | | | |

Even without the brain like a goldfish with late stage dementia, a serious discussion should’ve been planned for the summer anyway.
Gives his all but never a full back at this level and 5th choice CB now - would’ve been 6th choice if Morrison hadn’t asked to leave - there needs to be some deep thinking as to how/if we move forward with him. [Post edited 24 Jan 17:36]

Never a fullback at this level? He's had superb games against two of the best wingers in the league in Mavididi/Gray. His recovery pace and last ditch tackle in the first minutes of the Boro game was sensational. He's ill-disciplined and technically imperfect - but he's been mostly good! And certainly a better player than Morrison.

It wasn't Mbengue's fault we decided to defend like tarts and let them have as much space as they liked to ponce around outside our box like it was a dressage display.

Hindsight’s a good thing too, but I was genuinely sat there from 55mins saying we needed to make changes and as soon as he did it we looked better. Credit for making them but 15 mins earlier please!

Hard to argue with that. Mbengue started in the centre and then was moved out to the right by Stephan. A full back Mbengue isn't, what he adds in enthusiasm is outweighed by his limitations going forward, and, as you've said, his technical ability.
Both he at full back and the manager are starting to have a one season feel about them. |  | | |

The time to get mad with Mbenge is if he starts receiving red cards on a regular basis. For a long time we have been asking for an aggressive player in the team and now we have one. Some of his yellows are daft like yesterday, but remember the amount of yellows that Sam Field would rack up a couple of seasons ago for shirt pulling.
Steve Cook's form has dropped along with much of the squad the past few weeks, only Burrell, Smyth and RND seem to be exempt.
Julien has to turn this around in an effort to finish 15th. |

JS should have subbed him off earlier when he had subs at 2-1, moving Dunne to RB and Edwards on for him in the centre.
First yellow was bizarre and not his fault, as the ref was getting his card out before he started talking to him. But once on a Yellow, he should have reigned it in.
The worst part was how we fell apart as soon as he went off.

Luckily it appears he’ll be suspended for three games.
Hopefully Le Tombeler will happen across yet another defensive combination that’ll keep him out after the suspension as well. A spell on the sidelines watching games might be just what he needs.

Mbengue clearly at fault for his part and needs to learn fast from this - hopefully that is possible.
But yeah, game management, time management, lumping it back to them centrally on the halfway line, players sitting in the box giving space and time to put good shots on target. It was like a case study in what not to do in those situations.
Was absolutely numbing yesterday but the whole squad needs to learn from it and move on. |  | | |
