| Steve cook on 11:53 - Mar 9 by GaryBannister86 | What really hacks me off is that it would be a terrible way to treat any player, never mind one that was a superb signing for us, put his body on the line time after time, was a former captain and also carried us through some dreadful times. If it is the end, I will always believe that Steve Cook is the most under appreciated player I have seen in 50 years of watching Rangers - barely even got a song and treated like absolute dirt by the club. |
And what is the long term impact of this? Players talk. They share agents. When players hear about this sort of treatment of a respected, experienced pro, who has played at the top level, will they want to come here? What’s Sam Field likely saying about the club to his Norwich teammates. Word gets out. I’ve been saying this for 2 years. Football is a people business. People talk. People have emotions. You cannot treat people like sh*t and think it won’t come back to bite you. To succeed, we need players at other clubs to want to come and play for us. We want players to be willing to sign for us for reasons other than cash or a promise of being sold in X years. Our CEO does not have the slightest clue how to lead people to instill a good culture. You cannot player trade your way around that.

I couldn't agree more. And back to my under appreciated point, just read a QPR fan on Twitter saying that Cook is the "second best CB at the club" behind JCS. I mean, if I was Cook I would delete the whole QPR experience from my memory, never mind social media. Slogs his guts out, then some bloke made of glass who turns up once every 30 games for half an hour is rated above him?!

And I too think he’s been benched because otherwise he’d trigger a new contract. Been a really good servant for QPR and has been really underrated but let’s all sing a song about Jon Varane. We don’t know for sure but it does look like that . If it’s because he won’t be here and we need to to play others for next season then what’s with the ‘non warming up sub?’ Just don’t pick him . They’ve done it to Nardi, who now doesn’t even train by all accounts . Chair not at training ground at present . Very strange . Now the Cook situation. . And there clearly is a situation going by his social media . As I said about the Marti situation, it wasn’t necessarily the getting rid of him But how it was done. Stop treating people , coaches, players , staff , fans with contempt !!

Didn’t know that about Nardi. He’s another one who has been totally bombed out unfairly. Sure, he’s not Manuel Neuer but the way the club have treated him is very poor. And as you say it is speculation but based on the X profile updates - a picture (or an updated profile photo) speaks a thousand words. Why are they keeping us so in the dark. Do they just think we’re all stupid Arrogance of the highest level if so.

| Steve cook on 11:22 - Mar 9 by Lblock | Steve Cook may well have left the building........ He's deleted all QPR mentions on his socials and switched everything back to AFC Bournemouth. Well played Christian and Gawd knows what happens now with any CB injuries what with Liam Morrison out of the picture |
There’s loads of his QPR posts still on his X page. Think he’s been told he’s not getting another contract and we will be playing the other lads which is fair enough in as much it gives him plenty of time to get another club for next season but I will be sorry to see him go as he’s been one of our best signings in recent years. As stated it’s pointless him being on the bench if he’s not going to play as we have JCS and Smith there already.

Well he’s been called into the full South Africa squad and is rated as one of their best young players. And he’s 20 years old with 10 minutes experience out of position for us: I’d probably be prepared to give him a chance before writing him off eh? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Last season Cook was fifth for us for most minutes played with 2,617 minutes. JCS managed 753 minutes last season. This season Cook has 1.989 minutes. JCS has 325 minutes. It's a very strange world where a player who is never fit to play is considered the best in his position for us! PS - of the four players who played more minutes for us than Cook last season Paal has left, Nardi and Field side-lined, which leaves only Dunne who has been our most ever-present player this season and last - and we were in talks to sell him last season! With the exception of Nardi those are all players Nourry inherited. When are the new boys going to step up? https://fbref.com/en/squads/a7 https://fbref.com/en/squads/a7 [Post edited 9 Mar 14:53]

| Steve cook on 11:34 - Mar 9 by lassel | Very senior players were openly discussing internal issues infront of supporters at the training ground earlier this year. The atmosphere/respect level has been desperately poor for a while. |
Michi Frey openly called Ben Williams "That cyclist c**t" To anyone that wanted to know at the start of the season after he picked up a knock and flew out with his own trainer, without permission to go and rehab elsewhere.
| Steve cook on 14:18 - Mar 9 with 1276 views | Markofthegrove | On Cook, it's widely believed he is either due a bonus after a certain amount of league games or they have told him he can leave at the end of the season, or both. I think it's both from what I have heard. He doesn't have any extension clauses. | | | |

I’m going to double check that picture of his to see if I can find the hidden cycling chunt right away….beats the power knitting course I’m going to have to subscribe to if we don’t start playing football again. And I really hate power knitting, just a little less than losing every game and sticking pins in my nob to take my mind off it.

| Steve cook on 14:35 - Mar 9 with 1184 views | LazyFan | If Cook has renewed auto option in his contract due to the number of games played (assuming that's 30), then that was stupid. There was no way we were going to renew him for next season, as he will be 35 then and on super-high wages, and we could get two other players for. Granted, they will not be as good this season as Cook, but will Cook be as good as Cook next season? Unlikely as the Championship is only getting faster and tougher. At some point, we have to move on from Cook, even though it's clear he's one of our top performers. So, we always knew this and should not have put that 30-game cap in there (if it does exist). As this then means we only have Cook for 2/3s of the season. And we are not out of the relegation woods yet. Super stupid. If there is no cap, then he should be played, we can tinker with different CB's once we have crossed the line at 53 pts. Thus, no wonder Cook has removed all his QPR stuff; you would too if you had been treated that way. Also, Bournemouth is a Premier League club, so that makes him look for a Premier League club for his next club. Remember, Dunne is out of contract again at the end of the season. This leaves us with Edwards. Morrison and JCS (don't laugh at the back) are our only contracted CB's. Assuming Dunne renews, then we have enough there with 3 + 1 sick not to compete. And this also assumes Morrison returns to form. Many IF's, but not big ones. Then let's not get into we have no LB at all next season. But we do have lots and lots of wingers (who are never fit). They need Cook's wages to rebuild the squad again. But it has all been handled once again very badly. I still suspect they will sell Madsen and Varane in the summer, as these are our only salable assets. Chair hasn't played, no one will give us £5m for him now. We are not ready to sell Burrell or Kone. So, it has to be those two in the middle. Madsen is the obvious one, if he can get fit in time for and end of season run out. | |

Smith never played at senior level for his club in South Africa. And South African football is not that great. I would think he is currently a long way off Championship standard.

Yes he’s probably not Championship standard yet: should be ok for fourth choice centre back on the bench though. Not sure any of us are experts on South African football and would suggest you are belittling the fact he was called up for their national team for a major tournament.

We will have to see what the future holds. IMO the fact that he was signed by us raised his profile in South Africa. But yes probably OK for 4th choice centre back. [Post edited 9 Mar 19:36]

If you look at the games where we win and don’t concede many it is when Steve Cook plays. Nourry’s babies are crying out for leadership and experience. Sounds like Cook has been bombed Pitt alongside Field with Chair completely vanished. Only Dunne and Hayden left with any proper experience.

Changed the photo from a QPR shot to one playing for Bournemouth. https://x.com/SteveCook28 The whole 'Steve Cook has been rested" official communication is exactly what's wrong with everything coming from the club. It's clearly bullsht. Now revealed as so to the fans, it must have been known as such by the players too. So, in trying to pointlessly control a narrative, Nourry has hacked off the player and the fans, possibly the coach - who will ever know - and probably sown distrust amongst the squad, because if they treat a former captain and experienced pro like Steve Cook like this, how will they be treated? Tell us what's happening with Steve Cook, tell us the severity of Madsen's injury, update on Chair's injury, on Burrell...there is clearly no sporting advantage being gained in not doing so, the GDPR bit was a lie as no other club toes that line. Just saying a simple, Cook has been a great player for us but we're looking to the future and want to give Robnie Edwards and Dunne a chance to form a partnership and give opportunites to younger players. This whole rested and then ignored thing is ridiculous. Cook will get my vote for POTY this season. He's the latest in a long line of people who will leave the club in really poor circumstances, Marti, Furlong now Cook and there have been others. They could walk out the front door head held high for a job well done, we've kicked them out the back. [Post edited 9 Mar 21:04]

I am all for looking to the future, but bunging young players out there in the current situation is negligent behaviour and is absolutely not what good development clubs do. What has Tylon Smith learned from being bunged into a position he has never played in yesterday? Of all the disgraceful things that happened yesterday, that was probably the worst for me. We continually let young players down, and Smith is the latest young player this season to be let down by the club. Morgan had a loan lined up, Bennie was also off to Wycombe, but neither went due to injuries. Now we have fed a young lad to the wolves yesterday. It also goes back to when we didn't get Armstrong out to League 1 when we should have either (Not on CNs watch to be fair). You add in young players when things are relatively stable and let them develop around a good bunch of pro's, Sam Field, Steve Cook and Jimmy Dunne etc. The championship isn't an U24s league.
