True, but if you think that these measures are solely driven by health and safety concerns, as opposed to making money, then I am afraid we disagree.
This and turning residential areas into parking permit zones, while allowing residents to drop kerbs and not make them use their garages, is another example of making cash. Oh, and it would really help if they kept up to speed (no pun intended) with fixing f.....g pot holes.

From a legal perspective, courts typically view road regulations as part of a state’s duty to safeguard public safety, not as an infringement of core human rights.
They apply equally and predictably, rather than targeting specific groups. And they are considered a proportionate measure—you’re still free to travel, just not at any speed. | |

If I want to drive from my brother's flat to a mate's house, it's like four miles away and during that drive it goes 20, 30, 20, 30, 20, 30, 40, 30. How's that good?

This is where I have a problem with the system. It's not the use of cameras per se, it's the subsequent lowering of the speed limit to an impractical 20mph and the inconsistency on some streets. It's clearly designed to catch people out and raise revenue.
For example, my cousin recently received a NIP for being snapped doing 33mph on a country lane in Iver Heath at 11:33pm. The road he was snapped on is no more than 400 yards long. He was convinced the road is 40mph so he thought about challenging. When we went to take a look, it was more complex than he thought. When you initially come off the roundabout, the road is signposted 40mph. Within 100 yards, it's signposted for 30mph. 50 yards later there's a sign saying that if you see the lights flashing, it's 20mph otherwise it's at 30mph. 20 yards beyond that there's another sign saying 30mph.
This is utterly confusing and counter productive. How can it possibly be in the interests of safety to expect a driver to be reading so many signs and be constantly trying to figure out what the speed limit is? Surely, it's safer to encourage them to concentrate on their driving and their surroundings? By all means use cameras in high risk areas but for pity's sake make it easier for motorists to know what the speed limit is by keeping it simple. |  | | |

The A316 stretch by Old Deer Park in Richmond has always been 40. As you go out of London there is (was) clearly a 40mph roundel just in front of the first average speed camera.
Use that road often on my motorbike (which has no sat nav) when commuting. Just happened to be going along there the other week in my car coming back from my sons footy match and the sat nav (Waze) was flashing red at 30.
"strange" I thought, especially as most other vehicles were doing at least 35+.
A few days later when coming back from work I noticed the rondel has gone completely, not even a 30mph one in it's place. Yes, we're meant to "know" that a road with no speed signs and street lights is automatically 30mph but for all I know the 40mph sign could have fallen off/been knicked etc. It's been 40 for decades.
So I googled it just in case it was a case of the 40mph sign going missing but no, it has actually been reduced to 30 yet there were absolutely no signs whatsoever saying the speed was going to now be 30.
That is unforgivable.

To be fair, my last speeding ticket was entirely my fault.
I was doing 40 in a 30. Now, to be fair, I thought it was a 40mph road. And this is the mad thing, I realised when I looked up and saw lampposts and then I slowed down to 30. Thing is, I got snapped by a policeman in a bush.
So I'd already corrected my behaviour before I even knew. A few days later I got the letter and was gutted.
The reason I thought to look up at the lampposts? Well, this was a Tuesday and on the Thursday before, I'd done a speed awareness course.

Local authorities lower speed limits becuase speed is the most significant factor in the severity of the injury. A 1mph reduction in speed means a 6% less likley for accidents to happen.
If someone is hit by a car doing 30 mph they have a 40% chance of being killed; if someone is hit at 20mph they have a 90% chance of surviving. | |
