| Miscasting 15:01 - Apr 13 with 9985 views | E17hoop | I saw an episode of Law and Order Criminal Intent the other day. It was a later series when Vincent D'onofrio wasn't doing every episode. The lead detective? Jeff Goldblum. Overacting, trying to take the limelight from the collective. What are the worst examples of miscasting that stand out to you from film and TV? | |

I turned off pretty much as soon as she appeared. It makes me worry about who'll play me in 'council house scum dirge'

If you’ve read the books he was terrible. Even worse than the Jack Reacher casting by Executive Producer Tom Cruise of actor Tom Cruise. The TV show for that is so much better because the actor is six foot four as is the character in the book which is such a big part of his identity. It maybe would have worked as a spoof but I wonder if the producers just read the script and not the original books. I’m guessing he was the only ‘name’ they could find to take the role but it really didn’t work and was an embarrassment. Ray Winstone would have been much better casting.

Then again it's a really hard role to nail. Lots of great actors have struggled. Oldman won an Oscar but for me doesn't lay a hand on the ultimate depiction by Albert Finney in the Gathering Storm

Watchable film though and McCarthy/Keane aren’t easy characters to play. The guy who played Keane was excellent in a film which essentially isn’t about much. Honorary mentions for the small parts they gave to play the roles of Clinton Morrison, Steven Reid and Niall Quinn. |
I thought they did an amazing job, really enjoyed the film, The Confrontation scene was amazingly well done, but yeah McCarthy being played as Partridge really took away from it. Guess they needed a name to get it greenlit

Not a huge fan of Nu Trek as it kinda misses the point of what it's supposed to be about (too much action! It's supposed to be optimistic! why is everyone a secret spy or an assassin!), but despite some quibbles, SNW mostly gets it right and it feels refreshing just having a story of the week like TOS. BUT. That lad they have as Young Kirk who appears now and again is so badly miscast. He's so slight. Kirk has a build to him. He's played so weirdly; he's both too flippant and too serious. There's something that I can't quite put my finger on but he's just not Kirk (unlike Ethan Peck who absolutely carries the show as Spock)

They did a short series of the Talented Mr Ripley, just called 'Ripley' and he was terrible in that as well. Vacant does not equal psychopath

I think he addressed this in an interview I saw, he reckons he's trying to do a Cork accent or some nonsense

I thought I'd imagined that, Nick. It's like he's trying to do Neeson's version of the Cork accent from 'Michael Collins'.

I'm on series 3, I'm enjoying it and I hate all the other reboots. Agree about Kirk he reminds me of the dude in 'Bewitched' (the 60's show not the Irish girlband) Spock is superb, the episode where the 'Mixed instructions' causes the entity to fix him wrong made me laugh out loud.

To be fair I don't think Ewan McGregor was the main problem with the prequels. Just about everything was wrong about them. And no offence to Jake Lloyd, who plays Anakin, but he was seriously miscast but then the whole idea of Phantom Menace was horrendous, so a kid that looks like he should be in an episode of The Waltons again isn't the biggest issue.

Irish accents? Sean Bean in Patriot Games. For miscasting, I'd pushed Sophia Coppola's performance in Godfather 3 out of my mind. And now it's back.

Irish accents you say? Try The Devils Own, starring Brad Pitt and Harrison Ford from 1997. Pitts Belfast Irish accent is a marvel in its own right. At least Ford was playing an Irish/American so could avoid the accent. Dreadful film as well. Nothing like glamourising the IRA for an American audience.

I get the feeling that Brad Pitt has spent a large part of his life with people telling him he's great at everything and has little self awareness left at this point. Hi traveller accent in Snatch was also a thing of beauty. In the last film I saw him in it looked like he'd convinced himself he could actually drive an F1 car...

I absolutely love that they start that film talking Russian, then about three minutes in Sam Neill reads a bit of a poem, we zoom in on his mouth, zoom back out again, and that's the end of that nonsense.

McGregor was enough to put me off the prequels on his own, but I agree with everything else you say. The fact that Lucas chose to shoot all those later movies inside a studio and CGI all the backgrounds was also a massive problem. Coincidentally, I was writing a movie in Sydney when they were filming one of them there in Fox Studios, and a friend got me onto the set. So I got to handle the lightsabers that they used. Whether that's cool or not, I don't know!

The Irish accent is a tough one to nail . Judi Dench struggles with the Northern Ireland accent in Belfast but does a cracking west of Ireland accent in Philomena. Love that film .

Oddly, he's totally convincing in the Wolf of Wall St though,,,, tends to excel at the slimy roles...
