Absolutely peak misunderstanding of cause and effect from the club there.
Good players, who are likely to have a professional career, will reach 1,800 minutes. Every single one of them. If you don’t reach 1,800 minutes in your pro career you haven’t had a successful pro career.
The reaching of the milestone is not the cause of a successful career (not every player who reaches 1,800 minutes goes on to have a successful career). The being good enough to play 1,800 minutes or 2,000, or 5,000 or whatever you deem in minutes a successful pro career to be is what is the cause of a successful career. The number of minutes you play is the outcome.
The club determining that 1,800 minutes is their threshold to be considered part of the first team squad is fine by me. Draw the line wherever you want, lads. Make it 5,000 and you’ll have an even higher success rate to justify it (a higher % of players with 5,000 minutes have a successful career). But that presents a bit of a problem in that several of your first team wouldn’t be in the first team squad.
It’s all nonsense.
Were we really making Rayan Kolli get changed and showered in a different dressing room because he hadn’t reached the arbitrary 1,800 minutes? Or did he not have his own locker and had to leave his gear in a bag on the floor?
It’s performative. It’s nice of the club to do this stuff. But the tie in to these stupid statistics is so crass. It makes me worry our team don’t understand data, cause and effect, or how to communicate it. |  | | |

I imagine it's just something as simple as he didn't have his own locker in the first team area.... but they probably keep 4 or 5 spare anyway.
I think it's a nice thing and we've done it for Morgan and Kolli now. It also shows the youth teamers that there is a direct pathway to the first team and a target for them to hit.

My point was that I didn't mind them doing it, but they don't need to go public with it.
The club should definitely have kept the lid on the haka experiment.
If the club wants to set a specific benchmark for recognition as a proper player that's fine.
But what do you do with young prodigies like Clive Allen and Kevin Gallen? Tell them they're not really first team players until they've put their time in!?

What it means to Kolli is that the club considers him a 1st-team squad player, and he won't be expected to play DS games anymore and no longer thinks he might not be good enough by trying to fight to get into the squad. His job now is to try and fight to get into the first team. And he gets his name on a locker to prove that.
These little things are actually important to players; not being expected to play for the DS must be a big relief. Remember, you are expected to be the best player on the pitch in every DS game, or you can never get in the first team squad, as they will claim you're not ready. Every game!
You cannot have an off day at all. Got a nasty head-banging cold, play or someone will take your place, and you may never get back in the first eleven of the DS, even, let alone a sub in the first team squad. So, he will be very happy he's established, which I said he was on a post a month ago.
For propaganda purposes, it shows the Daddy and Mommy of Messi 2.0 that their little bundle of love can possibly make it with QPR, rather than being banished into the social media void of Chelsum to be later discarded into the mire of the real world. I went to school with a player who signed with Arsenal youth, and even was at the old FA National School of Excellence at Lilleshall, going onto to play for England schoolboys. He now works at Waitrose as a manager, as he never made it. This is the reality of the football world, 99% do not make it. Roony said there were way better players when he was coming up than him, but he said he wanted it more. We have seen players like JET who clearly have massive skill, but could not be bothered.
When a club says your little Timmy can come to us and we think we can make him a pro. Gets shown all the fancy training ground and coaches and famous names, they then rightly ask ... "yeah but how many make it into the first team?"
We then get to show the stories of:
Sterling
Eze
Manning
Armstrong
Lloyd
Sutton
And so on.
They then ask .... "yeah but how many play now in the first team?"
We then get to say:
Esq
Smith
Bennie
Alemayehu
They then ask, "Yeah, but how many are established, as in regular first-team players?"
And this is where we look better than the rest:
Morgan
Kolli
Walsh
They then ask, "But what about those who do not get into the first team? How do they develop?"
We mention the loans as a way of developing.
Cooper (playing in the Champ already)
Lloyd (playing L1 top-promoted team)
Sutton (playing non-league, but has also played for QPR first team)
I have no doubt we say something like ...
"We have a plan for all our young players. Some make it with us, some make it by going on to other clubs. But we try and ensure we make it happen for them."

"Beware of the big clubs like Chelsea, they burn through players. We picked up Vale from them, but that's the only one who made it, and he made it with us, same as Eze, who was discarded by Millwall. Which is true, no one else does do what we did this season.
We paid for it, of course, by losing games we should not have lost.

He also has 12 full international caps and played at Euro 2020. He had something but we couldn't develop it and the Championship overwhelmed him. I think a lot of it, perhaps was he didn't have a strong enough mentality. He seems to have drifted since he left us too. | | | |
