Even if the quality of the Euros is higher, there's something special about a World Cup. Blatter and Infantino's strategy of bribing the smaller associations to shore up their support base, then being as corrupt as possible, has obviously been terrible for the sport. But if you're a smaller African, Asian or South American association then you've almost certainly done better out of FIFA over the last few decades than you might otherwise have done, which is (corruption aside) a broadly good thing. UEFA need to act, but I really hope this doesn't end up just being about the richest nations shutting themselves off from everyone else, or demanding more control of the game and its finances. I did wonder if it was a cultural thing, a way of sucking up to power to get what you want. Now I'm sure he's simply a certified d*ck and shouldn't be anywhere near football. IMO - the globalisation of football hasn't been a good thing. The premier league and media machine that's behind it is f*cking sh*t. The reality is, football isn't owned or for the fans. It's one of those meaningless lines like "lesson's will be learnt' or "an attack on them is an attack on all of us" when no lessons are ever learnt and it was clearly an attack on a specific group of people. If we can be honest about the state of the game then we can start to think about how to fix it. Another uncomfortable truth is that players are paid far too much money. It's totally warped the sport. I still enjoy watching football, but everything around it is toxic. I don't know what the solution is, but it can't carry on as it is.

I agree with you Joe. I absolutely hate what capitalism has done to football. When I was a kid, it felt like football was something really special I'd found. It was something that belonged to those of us who went to games, read the reports and carefully collected our club programmes. Now, it feels like monied businessmen have grabbed the game out my hands in pure, naked greed to extract every possible bit of profit they can. In doing so, they squeeze so much of the joy out of the game. A plague on their houses.

Europe has the wealthiest leagues, clubs, and players but UEFA doesn't own any of that. If the football world starts fragmenting and UEFA unilaterally decides to boycott FIFA you could soon find the top clubs and players saying hang on that's going to cost us money. Who are you to decide that? UEFA could get squeezed out completely. As The Donald might say "they've got no cards" |
With the caveat that UEFA would need to be supported by a good majority of its national associations, you couldn't be more wrong. FIFA without Europe is finished. Do you think Brazil and Argentina want to play in a World Cup against African and Asian teams? Do you think Latin American footballers want to continue to have the chance to play in the European leagues? Europe has nearly all the cards.

it will go the same way as the prem , nearly all owned by americans so within five years prob less the fixture list in the prem will have games each season in the usa as a standard in the fixture list.

You know, organising things. Then, they will be having shares in those companies that are to be doing the job that FIFA themselves should be doing. This has got Trumps playbook/fingerprints all over it. You could probably tell Infantino's reaction when it was suggested to him because I doubt he even thought about it himself. It's an absolute grift. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The bigger issue is that once private investment companies own shares in the World Cup, they will want big returns on their investment. That means even more monetisation than is already the case and will lead to pressure such as hosting the World Cup every two years instead of four etc

Latest UEFA statement on the subject: „Today we have learned of FIFA’s deadline to associations to support their proposals or have the one-off payout offer withdrawn. This says everything you need to know about this plan. But having held discussions with many stakeholders across the game, UEFA knows there is significant and growing opposition to FIFA’s scheme. FIFA cannot continue to use our sport to enrich themselves and their friends. We can grow the game correctly. It’s time to prioritise associations, clubs, leagues, players and fans.”

The real power is with the big clubs and their players. And a lot of those clubs are now owned by Americans and Arabs who couldn't care less about UEFA and the niceties of tradition. Money will probably be the deciding factor. Getting UEFA out of the way will make it easier for the big clubs in Europe to grab an even bigger slice of the pie. Maybe they will push again for a Super League. Maybe they will settle for negotiating their own TV deals and hogging even more of the game's wealth. Who knows. Infantino might have sprung this without consulting the national federations but I bet he has sounded out the big club owners and at least got tacit support. I'm not saying UEFA will have to roll over, but they could find that whatever they try the big European clubs (and maybe the leagues) are working against them rather than with them. Or maybe you're right about UEFA's power and I just enjoy a good conspiracy too much! Let's see how it plays out. It could get messy. [Post edited 29 Jul 21:12]

You make some interesting points about the big European clubs. However, UEFA have the competitions those clubs have to play in, such as the Champions League, the Europa League, the Conference League, the Super Cup, plus the Women's equivalents. And then there's the Euros and the Nations League. UEFA has powerful cards to play.

That's a strong comeback. But hypothetically, how many clubs would need just to threaten to boycott the CL for UEFA to cave? Without the big clubs the TV companies would be demanding their money back. We know they have been talking to each other about a Super League, so it's not like there isn't already a strong level of cooperation in pursuit of self-interest amongst the elite clubs.

That was exactly the issue with the Super League. The fact it exploded on the very day that UEFA were announcing the changes to the Champions League which were introduced as a sop to the big clubs who'd been agitating for such changes made it all the more surprising

He has offered a bribe (he calls it a "consultation") to the 211 members of FIFA to support his proposals. $20 mill now and another $20 mill when the proposals go through. To the majority of the 211 members this represents more than their annual budget. To a European club it might pay for an average midfielder. Infantino will win that round, and he knows it. If UEFA makes a stand, they HAVE to follow through. That means breaking away from FIFA if they say they will. I personally doubt they have the resolve to do it. Hope I'm wrong. In any case I'd prefer to continue supporting a team whose ground I can walk to, playing in a halfway honest competition, to a periodic bloated cash-fuelled dissipation designed to enrich a tiny group of oligarchs and their families.

It's a bribe he's offering, pure and simple. He's offering 40m to all Associations who sign up now or just 10m for anyone who's against the plan. He knows his target market - they all love money above all else. That and the fact that he's given a 53-day response time. Anyone else think it's dodgy when a limited time offer comes across? UEFA holding an emergency remote meeting this afternoon among all National Associations. Let's see what comes out of that.
