He's offering 40m to all Associations who sign up now or just 10m for anyone who's against the plan. He knows his target market - they all love money above all else. That and the fact that he's given a 53-day response time. Anyone else think it's dodgy when a limited time offer comes across? UEFA holding an emergency remote meeting this afternoon among all National Associations. Let's see what comes out of that. |
Kieran Maguire has said many times that FIFA loses money three years out of every four, but in a WC year they make enough to see them through the next four year cycle. Apparently this WC has made a huge profit so Infantino to put it bluntly is flush. He has the money now to throw around and get his way, and if someone like UEFA digs in their heels then he has the war chest to take them on. A lot of planning has probably gone into this and now is probably the optimal time for him to do it. If he doesn't get his way now then the chance might not come along again for another four years and GI would hardly survive that long if he fails now. It's probably all or nothing for him.

Separate issues though. He even seemed to backtrack a bit yesterday, saying this was just a proposal and has to be voted through. The war chest he needs for all this money isn't in FIFA coffers though - that's coming from private investment which FIFA has outlined has to be paid up fully by the end of October. And as for the planning, it has definitely been happening for a while, but only between Infantino, Trump family and a select few others. The first any of the national associations knew of this was the day before yesterday with Infantino's letter. Whether they're for or against this, they've all been blindsided completely. And in another underhanded twist, he made sure to do this as soon as most of them go off on holidays. If this were a proper plan it would require many many months of notice, planning, voting etc instead of being sprung on the world the week after the Trump-Pepsi World Cup ended.

If UEFA (or anyone else) tries to oppose this, such as a boycott he will have a lot of FIFA money and FIFA lawyers to throw at the problem. Trump or whoever else is backing this won't want to get their hands dirty or sink their own money into fighting UEFA. They will be quite happy to let GI burn through FIFA's funds first. The 'war chest' would be the money made from the WC just gone.

It's a separate pot of cash. The money from the WC just finished is already destined (mainly) for the national associations. These extra funds he's promising will be coming from the private equity investment he's looking to stir up

I think you are missing my point. Infantino has the money now to throw 'bribes' around or fight anyone like UEFA who might want to challenge him. The private equity investments is money that will be made in future if GI gets his way now.

Not sure how this can be 'unanimous' when the Czechs have already backed Infantino https://news.sky.com/story/cze "The president of the Czech Republic's football association has welcomed FIFA's bombshell plan to sell stakes in the World Cup's commercial rights - an endorsement which could complicate any move by the European body UEFA to boycott future global events."

No chance Africa is voting against this, and pretty surprised to see CONCACAF coming out against TBH. The problem with FIFA's model is Vanuatu gets the same vote as Germany. Makes it absolutely ripe for manipulation like this because how would you even begin to spend $40m in Vanuatu?

Sort of prefer the Euros as it seems much more competitive. As money talks expect a compromise will be reached between FIFA and UEFA, but a World Cup expansion to 64 teams really is going to in my opinion further degrade the competition.

I keep saying it, but they get away with it when people fly in and pay thousands for group games under the guise of, 'oh it's a once in a lifetime!' You buy into it, then you are part of it! #FifaIsntFootballAnymore

Boycotting any FIFA tournament, which I imagine includes the rather shyte World Club Cup as well. Below article. Increased FIFA tournaments, higher ticket prices, TV rights sold to Netflix etc, womens game not mentioned. All courtesy of the Trump family connections. https://www.theguardian.com/fo Fck it, the Euros are better than the WC Cup anyway.

also included the womens tournaments. Although the smaller nations will like their cash now, without Europe the World Cup is not gonna make anywhere near the same kind of money in 4 years and expect pressure from Saudi now who will want Spain, England etc when they host it. All UEFA need to do now is suggest they could invite South American teams into the Nations League and FIFA are snookered.

Infantino has screwed himself with the timing IMO No way UEFA makes this statement 6 months ago and actually boycotts the world cup, but they can absolutely make a point by following through and boycotting the u20 women's world cup.
